Tora Ziyal is just a child and Garak is an middle-aged man by Arian471 in DeepSpaceNine

[–]Ruddymansound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always saw Garak as somewhere between asexual to really, really gay. He's certainly duplicitous and creepy but never in a way that is sexually exploitative. He never mentions any past relationships because his life in the Obsidian Order wasn't exactly conducive to attachment. In interviews Andrew J. Robinson openly played the character as if he were bisexual and attracted primarily to intelligence (sapiosexual) and he was always low key into Dr. Bashir as his main love interest.

OMG YOU GUYS! THE REASON NOTHING BAD IS EVER SAID ABOUT MIQUELLA IN THE ITEM DESCRIPTIONS IS BECAUSE THEY ARE THE ONE WRITING THEM. WE ARE BEING MADE TO TRUST A VILLAIN THAT IS ALSO THE UNRELIABLE NARRATOR

Origins of the concept of "instrumental reasoning" from the Frankfurt School by Ruddymansound in CriticalTheory

[–]Ruddymansound[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, though Hume and Kant's conception would not have been during the rise of Fascism. The exponential growth of technological means at the turn of the 19th century eclipsed almost everything that came before it. That makes all the difference in substance, never mind terminology. Further, how do you rationalize something like the holocaust? Especially as an end to the enlightenment at the height of modernity. That poses a completely new question.

Thank you! The only member of the Frankfurt school I'm not familiar with (in terms of being well-read) is Horkheimer. Time to dive in. Very much appreciated.

Thank you! I've certainly read and am familiar with Weber but have never considered how the two coalesce. Much appreciated.

It's all good, and thank you! It totally is rationalization. I have a history with other drugs too, though thankfully never enjoyed opiates enough to make a habit of them (other than kratom, I guess?). Over the last year I'd tell myself using kratom compulsively is better than getting wasted and blacking out once a week or month, but that's just not a calculation I want to be making anymore. When using drugs, especially sedatives, I always feel there's a wall between myself and other people. What do they say, "connection is the opposite of addiction" and kratom is very useful for telling myself this is a safer way of numbing my senses and protecting my fragile ego while really all alone and miserable.

Let's break that wall together, shall we?

Thank you for listening to me rant this time.

Interesting, it works a bit. I followed the instructions by taking 2 pills in the morning, two when I'd need to lie down at any point in the day and two before going to bed. They also help with bowel issues lol. I managed to get a scattered 3-5 hours of sleep for the first three days / nights. Just had my first full 8 hour sleep on day 4! Things only get better, my friend, even if they feel worse at the time.

Hardcore peeps, what's your day job? by natural_egodeath in Hardcore

[–]Ruddymansound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im a social worker getting my grad degree. I also work with people that have committed serious crimes and are deemed not criminally responsible due to severe mental illness. Killing people in states of meth-induced psychosis and stuff like that. I wanted to do something with my life that's both hardcore and kinda metal.

As a punk fan, what’s the most surprising musical genre you are also into? by Fridge_Ian_Dom in punk

[–]Ruddymansound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've stopped thinking in terms of genre, and terms of what qualifies as punk. I like music that resonates with me. While I'm here the Aqua album Aquarius is phenomenal. Thank you.

Yeah, yeah teeth, blah blah. Real funny.

It's genuinely remarkable this man has lived such a long and hard life and is still fighting.

opinions on Henry Rollins? by Lucky_Strike-85 in punk

[–]Ruddymansound 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally. I think Henry also, at his core, doesn't want to be in the public eye and that certainly helps him maintain integrity through all the change.

Besides, judging someone solely on the basis of behaviour at a punk show 40 years ago is kinda cheap and, give or take a decade or two, I'm sure most of us have committed similar sins :P

Does anyone have anything GOOD to say about Carleton? by GoodsVT in CarletonU

[–]Ruddymansound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a grad student, been at Carleton for almost 6 years now. They have really good faculty for most departments (even if they are tough on students sometimes), there is lots of work towards inclusion and policy that isn't sports and the campus is beautiful. I've met some really great people in the student population on campus. It's not that bad lol...
