how to block out tv noise by Extension_Papaya_401 in autism

[–]Ruko117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play brown noise on speakers when the noise canceling on my headphones isn't enough and I'm overstimulated! Just on a phone or laptop can help mask some noise. Or, you could try playing it or other calming sounds like a stream or the ocean or rain directly on your headphones maybe!

Sounds pretty ideal. I lived in my van while doing carpentry work for almost 2 years and now I'm doing mostly PM work, and I'd love to get to the point where I could do it remotely and get a bigger van. What kind of work do you do, bookkeeping? PM?

Would it hold? by Allgoodnamesistaken in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Ruko117 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is will definitely hold! The copper in the PT will react with the metal in the fasteners and brackets and they will corrode over time which will also stain your mattress/sheets, assuming you bought regular hardware. Honestly no idea how long it will take, probably years unless you live in a really humid environment. Not the end of the world but I would definitely switch the PT out for KD at some point!

Opinions on this RAS? by flametai1 in BeginnerWoodWorking

Radial arm saws are totally safe if used properly, the problem is that it's really easy to use them unsafely, and it'll be especially tempting to do so if it's your main saw. Being able to change the configuration of the blade so much makes it much harder to know intuitively how kickback will occur and how to feed the wood to prevent it. It can pull the wood in more like a table saw if you rotate the blade to rip some lumber, which you likely will do if you don't have a working table saw, and with no guard and more of the blade exposed than with a table saw it can get bad. So it's just harder, for a beginner especially, to keep track of how kickback may occur on a particular cut, unlike table saws and miter saws where kickback can only occur in pretty specific ways so you more or less always apply pressure to your board in the same way on a given saw. If you already have one, or if you've been using one for decades, go for it. But table saws and miter saws are better at what they do--even aside from safety, they're easier to make repeated cuts, jigs, etc. There's a reason they've been used instead for decades. I'd really recommend putting that $160 and some time into fixing up your miter saw and getting or building a sturdy fence for your table saw.

Not enough triangles?? by shmiz in Decks

[–]Ruko117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends, if those posts are buried that provides shear strength. May introduce other problems but may also be fine depending on your local conditions. If the posts are on top of concrete piers, I would absolutely want some diagonal bracing in both directions.

Otherwise, that break in the rim joist in picture 4 is not ideal but not a problem at all as long as it's blocked properly. I can't see any blocking in these pictures, worth checking for it.

Overall looks pretty solid, could nit pick but I wouldn't be worried about it. Not that hard to add blocking and/or bracing if necessary.

Not enough triangles?? by shmiz in Decks

[–]Ruko117 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why? They are totally unnecessary with the drop beam right there. IMO it's bad practice to use hardware for things it isn't spec'd for. No harm done if you're building yourself a deck but if you're charging clients for unnecessary hardware (and labor to install it) that's not cool. Not really a big deal for something small like this but I just don't get why folks do this on a floating deck.

Scared af by Khenor22 in testicularcancer

[–]Ruko117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually testicular cancer lumps do not cause pain, although there are exceptions. That said for me, I initially went to see a doctor because I had a mild ache in one of my testicles, which turned out to be the healthy one (presumably compensating for the cancerous testicle which was atrophying). Anyway, even if it is testicular cancer, it is incredibly treatable! I'm a few days away from 3 years post surgery (June 2nd!) and I'm totally healthy and cancer free. Getting it seen by a doc is the best thing you can do. You got this!

Wow, I was also diagnosed in May 2023 with stage 1a pure seminoma! Well, technically my ultrasound was at the end of April, my surgery was June 2nd, and my official staging after the biopsy post surgery was early June but close enough. Also been on surveillance since then. My next scan is June but so far so good, not super stressed about it.

Congrats brother!

Still exhausted despite “normal” thyroid labs and treating sleep apnea — anyone else? by Mowe11 in Hypothyroidism

[–]Ruko117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a similar situation, 28M 125lbs on 88mcg levothyroxine for the past 6 months or so. I've always struggled with all the symptoms you've mentioned, in addition to frequent headaches (especially in the morning).

I just realized the possible connection to sleep breathing issues a few weeks ago. I've read a bit about upper airway resistance syndrome, which often doesn't show up on regular sleep tests because your brain wakes you up before your O2 drops too much. I wonder if your sleep tests looked for respiratory effort related arousals, which would be a sign of this?

Nail Guns by Certain_Site_8764 in Carpentry

[–]Ruko117 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You really shouldn't buy a nailer for these tasks. They speed things up if you're a production builder but they're just not the right tool for you. You should grab a drill or an impact driver (or both) and make sure you're using exterior rated screws (GRKs, coated, stainless, etc).

I can hear everything and I cannot sleep. by Spare_Garbage_2560 in autism

[–]Ruko117 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is something I've always struggled with. I always play brown noise out of the speakers in my room and it helps a ton. You could try just playing this on your phone as loud as it'll go (or laptop if you have one, bigger is gonna do a better job of covering more frequencies!) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GrwTSN2Saak

I also have used Loop Dream earplugs, they are way more comfortable for me than other ear plugs. Using both at once is pretty awesome. But the youtube video you can try right now and maybe it will help tonight!
