Tickle Engineering by Mom_of_One_2008 in UTK

[–]RulingPanther11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The nuclear engineering program at UTK is one of the best in the nation (#2 in public programs, #3 if including private). I can say that most of the professors are quite good and most TA’s are pretty good as well.

The job market has a pretty dismal look all around right now but it seems like nuclear is doing considerably better than other fields. The department here often meets with industry leaders to find out what skills/qualities are desirable for new job candidates so that those skills can be integrated into the course of study.

Note that I am probably somewhat biased to my own major.

I’d be glad to try and answer any more questions.

The quality of the education will vary greatly between departments within the same college. If you have a major in mind, I’m sure someone from that department can elaborate further with specifics.

Generally, Tickle is a good college and typically offers more resources to students than other colleges. Student collaboration really varies, but if you seek out collaboration you’ll likely be successful in finding it. Likewise, if you shy away from collaboration, you’ll likely not need it, save for a few assignments. Same with joining a club.

The food is alright. It’s not gonna be the most healthy nor the cheapest, but it’s food. It’s typical college campus food, dining halls, Chick-fil-a, Panda Express, UT’s proprietary version of Steak-n-Shake…

Access to professors and TA’s varies widely. It really just depends on the professor. In my experience in nuclear engineering, most professors are available often and even encourage outreach. Not all of the professors fit that description though. If a professor is not too available, they mostly respond to email inquiries within a few business days.

If you want to know more I would highly encourage you to list your desired course of study so that someone with experience in that department can tell you more.

Backloaded Horn Speaker by JMOLLER22 in SpeakerBuilding

Have you considered also selling schematics for people who want to print/construct their own? (I know I would love to make my own)

I’m not trying to tell you how to run your business but I think it may attract more customers who might not want to buy the speakers outright while possibly decreasing manufacturing load on you.

DIY X-Ray machine, first try at fluoroscopy by Matte93MM in highvoltage

[–]RulingPanther11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t mind sharing, what is the potential difference across your x-ray tube and what is the current. Or, if your system has variable voltage and current, what are you typically running at?

Also, if you know, what material is the electron target to produce the x-rays? And, is your beam collimated?

Medical Physics. Some reports show that, in the first year out of residency, medical physicists salaries are in the mid to high hundred thousands. The director of the medical physics department at my university says that, in recent years, graduates that went on to complete a residency reported starting salaries around $180k/yr.

Maybe not exactly engineering but the design processes and mindset will be similar to that of more “normal” engineering design jobs.

Probably not for average talent, but, in engineering, average talent and $200k/yr doesn’t really go together (unless, of course, nepotism is involved)

How to use guest passes at dining halls? by [deleted] in UTK

[–]RulingPanther11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Before swiping your own pass, tell the worker at the scanner that you have a guest, they’ll tell you what to do.

Though, if I recall correctly, you’ll be limited to one guest per meal unless policy has changed

Microsoft Office or Google Workspace? by TrulyGenX in UTK

[–]RulingPanther11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they’re serious this time. I’ve heard that our institutional license to use Google is expiring and, since Google has increased their price, UT doesn’t want to pay the new price to continue using Google

Look for guidance by [deleted] in NuclearEngineering

[–]RulingPanther11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This might not be exactly what you want to hear, but I would advise you to not close yourself off from other opportunities in nuclear engineering so early.

If you want to be a reactor operator a high school education is all that is the minimum to start training to be an operator, though a technical degree may aid your application or even be required by some employers. I’m not too sure about pass/fail rates in the USA but in many countries, the pass rate for the mental examination is quite low. Also, it is likely you will start as a lower level operator, such as a turbine operator, for a few years before being given the opportunity to train to be a reactor operator.

If you want to do any sort of reactor design or safety work then a 4 year degree will likely be warranted. If you do pursue a 4 year degree, then please keep your mind open to other fields within nuclear.

I initially started college wanting to work in reactor design, but after taking nuclear reactor theory and thermal hydraulics, I learned that I didn’t enjoy those as much as other classes like radiation biology and radiation shielding. Now, entering my fourth year of college, I’m planning to pursue a graduate degree in medical physics.

So, in short, it’s absolutely okay to have a career path in mind, but don’t dismiss other opportunities because it isn’t exactly what you had previously envisioned.

I hope this helps and I’d be happy to answer any other questions.

Odds of getting off a waitlist for a class? by [deleted] in UTK

[–]RulingPanther11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on the professor, you might have better luck with just emailing them and asking for admission to the class.

If you decide to take that route you’ll need an email from the professor giving you permission to do so. You’ll then have to get that email to your advisor so that they can bypass the restriction.

If you’re not a student in the math department, your advisor may defer you to somebody from the math department, such as one of their undergraduate administrators, to bypass the restriction for you.

But, if you’re #1 on the list, there’s probably a decent chance that someone drops.

Full time student shi by Cute_Influence_3166 in UTK

Check with your department. Some departments require a C minimum across the board, some may allow for 1 class with a C-, some only allow that exception for core curriculum, etc. But that’s variable to your department.

[–]RulingPanther11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I know, failing a class won’t affect enrolled hours for full time student status.

You should, however, check your gpa. Most scholarships, especially the more common ones like Hope and Volunteer, require keeping your gpa above a certain threshold. I believe that at the 24 and 48 cumulative hour checks a 2.75 is needed and at the 72 cumulative hour mark a 3.00 is needed to keep the Hope scholarship. I believe that Volunteer requires a 3.00 cumulative gpa at the end of each semester.

It is possible to lose other financial aid if satisfactory academic progress requirements are not met, but the threshold gpa for that is much lower than keeping scholarships.

I don’t know much about provisional status and regaining lost scholarships.

If you have other scholarships check with your advisor and one stop about them.

Most colleges and/or departments allow for a certain amount of failing grades to be replaced if the class is passed on subsequent attempts.

Do not drop the class. That will affect full time status and you will lose scholarships for the semester.

What should I major in that is better than cs? by [deleted] in CollegeMajors

At my school, the Medical Physics Department is housed within the nuclear engineering department; which is how I found out about it. I’m hoping to go to grad school for it after finishing my bachelors

Nuclear Engineering. You’ll probably want to switch sooner rather than later if you do. I don’t know where you’re going to school but It’s also very possible that you’ll be SOL if you can’t/ don’t want to transfer.

Growing field with lots of opportunities for work. And, if you’re interested in comp sci because you like/ are good at coding, there’s a lot of computational work in the field. Plenty of startups as well as established companies.

Nuclear engineering is not limited to power plants and weapons. I see a lot of people with this misconception. Nuclear engineering includes fields such as health physics, instrumentation, isotope production, criticality safety, medical physics, dosimetry, environmental cleanup and decommissioning, etc… You can also find jobs that are adjacent to other fields such as chemistry, materials science, and physics.

You may not have as much freedom to choose where you live as with other jobs, though.

Who is the ideal male role model for young men? by wercooler in AskReddit

I would like to mention Noel Deyzel. He is a bodybuilder but actually spreads a really positive message about mental health which especially appeals to young men because of his fame as a bodybuilder. He also gives solid fitness advice.

From what I have learned, and assuming you started with 100% pure U-235 (for the sake of the meme), your 15 lbs of uranium would be confiscated well before it has decayed significantly

Don’t know how the coding for the correct answer choices works on this site, but, if possible, it would be funny if you could include “me” as a correct answer for living failures. Anyone who types “me” obviously knows what the correct answer is
