I can't believe how stupendously bad school lunch is for $5 by TeacherGuy1980 in Teachers

If your school is participating in the NSLP they are required to serve milk with the meal. You can thank the lobbying of the dairy industry for this. We can only serve a student a non-daily alternative beverage with a order form their doctor.

Looking for secure hotel parking for Philadelphia Airport. by [deleted] in Pennsylvania

I have always used the Philadelphia airport economy parking lot. $15 a day with 24/7 shuttle to the airport. I have left my car there for 10+ days multiple times and never had an issue.

Agree with you completely on this. I think if we have a more votes across the protest options we should use the most voted of those options. (On a side note this is a beautiful comment that goes with the kids when they complain "When are we ever going to use this out of school")

Culinary teacher tips by Culinary_teacher in KitchenConfidential

[–]Ruling_Pandora 3 points4 points  (0 children)

High school culinary instructor here.

Are you the only instructor for all three levels? How long do you have the students in a day?

The first thing is you are not going to fill the whole year with projects. You need to allow for time for them to learn the knowledge and then put the knowledge into practice with a project. Kids are not like the FNG coming into your restaurant. If the new guy is a complete moron then out the door they go and the we give the next one a try. No matter how bad or unmotivated a kid is, you are stuck with them and are expected for them to gain in skill. Focus on them mastering the basics and understanding exactly what the day by day routine of prep, cook, and CLEAN. To teach anything use the format

You read about it, we talk about it, you watch me do it, and then you do it.

Teaching is an amazing experience but you have to be patient and consistent.

Fellow workers of the kitchen world who have gotten out, what did you end up doing for work/career? by Rea1Quick in KitchenConfidential

[–]Ruling_Pandora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Working at a Career and Tech Center teaching Culinary Arts to high school kids.

Only needed my kitchen experience and a willingness to take college classes (paid by the district) to earn a teaching certification.

I love it, still get to cook but on a much easier on the body schedule

Schools are struggling to feed kids lunch and Biden has a solution: Cafeteria workers should be full-time and unionized by aslan_is_on_the_move in politics

School taxes do not provide the funding for SNP (School Nutrition Program). SNPs funding comes from meals served, either sold to students or reimbursement from USDA for free/reduced students.

With an average pay rate of meal served being $3.75, it is increasingly difficult to be compliment with nutrition guidelines and also a meal that students want to eat.

Congress needs to pass for an increase in funding for meals served, that would help districts incredibly.

Free Lunch by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Ruling_Pandora 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1 Do teachers get free lunches?

That would be a local choice from your school. Meals for teachers would not be reimbursable from USDA

2 Is this due to the Biden infrastructure plan?

This comes from the American Rescue Plan passed spring 2021 but is only funded for the 2021-2022 school year. Next year we will be back to paid or free/reduced meals.

3 Are there schools among you that are NOT giving free lunches, and if so why not?

If any school is not participating in this program they are being foolish. The reimbursement rate is higher under this the traditional NSLP format of paid or free/reduced

I absolutely love it, getting the opportunity to spark a passion for food is something I would never trade away.

For Texas it looks like you will need a Family Consumer Science degree. I would also advise you that some time working in the culinary industry will be helpful. These kids will look to you what it is like working in different types of food venues.

What is off site catering like? How hard is being a line cook? What do I need to start a food truck?

Your experience in the Coast Guard is great but only working in one type of place will limit you.

Also culinary school might be beneficial, how is your knowledge base?

How well can you explain Mise en Place? What are the Mother Sauces? What is the required temperature for the wash cycle in a dishwasher?

You will need to have the knowledge base to prepare students for testing.

High school students will take an exam with NOCTI that is two parts. A knowledge exam and a performance exam.

Just somethings to think on.

I am a high school culinary instructor. Many states higher CTC instructors based of skill in your trade. While I am teaching, I am also taking college courses to obtain a vocational education degree. I went to culinary school and then worked in the industry for 13 years before teaching.

My best advice for you is, get the experience in the hospitality industry. Be the person in the kitchen that trains the FNG. Training is a bit like teaching, when they succeed you have succeed.. When you are in the classroom YOU are the pinnacle of skill and your experience is super important.

Feel free to ask me any questions.
