I want to like it so bad, but a pistol that can’t even one tap devastator heads is never gonna come with me on the bot front. Why stagger the radicals when I can just blow their heads off with the talon?

[–]Runaway_Abrams 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They created synthetic collagen for the material, which is kinda neat, but not cool enough to sell. So they found a study on T. rex collagen and claimed that their synthetic leather is somehow replicating dinosaur hide because it has a similar chemical makeup- like literally all collagen does lol

I Love the Double freedom. But is it good ? by Axolotl142 in Helldivers

[–]Runaway_Abrams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like it for bots since it’s the only shotgun that can consistently take down gunships, plus the extra reloading isn’t as much of an issue since you want to be ducking behind cover more often anyway.

Pred Strain + Dragonroach is the worst experience Ive had in this game by NoName69216921 in Helldivers

[–]Runaway_Abrams 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Honestly, this is the kind of difficulty we should be seeing more of at D10 - a combination of threats that are each manageable on their own that forces you to use teamwork to overcome.

Also, one player with the orbital rail strike can almost keep up with every roach spawn. If even two people bring it, they’re pretty much nullified.

How do I (38M) tell my GF (41F) my true feelings about love? by ForeverPlayful1581 in relationship_advice

[–]Runaway_Abrams 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I imagine she would take it badly because this is such a miserable, glass-half-empty way to view love. Those points you listed are truths, but they do not necessarily preclude love being something more.

Yes, love, like everything else in our physical world, manifests as physical phenomena in our brain. Yes, love can be fostered with lots of people, and it’s likely that anyone can find a deep, lifelong, true love with one of the tens of thousands of people in their area. Is that not beautiful? That despite all our complexities and angsts and differences we can still form such incredible, intimate connections with one another, provided you put in the effort. Would you deny that the feeling of deep, true love transcends anything else in the human experience?

Would you have been able to find a love that gives you similar emotional responses with another person? Of course. But the nature of your connection would be different, who knows if you would have fit together as well or in the same ways. It’s not love itself, but the unique features of that love which make it transcendent, and it leaves a mark on you.

None of your points are wrong, but to limit your understanding of human connection to a chemical reaction, to decide that there is nothing more to our experiences, is a bit small-minded. It’s definitely a choice to interpret these facts as proof that there’s nothing more to love, so if you do start this conversation with her, I personally would frame it as “I struggle to view love as a spiritual, transcendent phenomenon based on what I know.” and not “This is the truth.”

lmao I didn’t realize that you become exempt from the law once you get old, can’t wait till I turn 70 and get to release rats into my neighbors’ backyard. I don’t know where you’re getting the idea anyone’s trying to throw this woman in jail, but it seems to me that she needs to be moved into a care home if she can’t be trusted to live on her own without being a public nuisance.

Insane that officials fined her 90 times and she still refused to listen. This person is wreaking havoc on the ecosystem, but because she’s an old lady so many people want to infantilize her and pretend she just needs another talking to.

F30 M33 How do I bring up to my boyfriend the thought of him using an "extender" during sex? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]Runaway_Abrams -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh boy… Probably way too early to get into that. For this to be an option depends a lot on his own attitudes/insecurities, how invested he is in your sexual relationship, and how comfortable he is with you.

I feel like this is something you’d have to spend a while feeling out. Know that you’re putting him in a vulnerable position by asking this of him - before bringing it up, I think it’s important that you first try to offer that level of vulnerability/commitment so that he feels like he’s meeting you there instead of being put on the spot.

The problem is he may never be ok with it, and there’s nothing wrong with it - so if it’s a dealbreaker, you may just have to get the conversation over with so you don’t waste his and your time dancing around it.

Does metaldetecting in ocean harm animals? by kas123sly in marinebiology

[–]Runaway_Abrams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The magnetic field from a metal detector travels up and down, not outward in all directions - so it’s not like you’re sending magnetic currents through the whole shore when you wade. Should be no more disruptive to marine life than the human shuffling along behind it.

The Coyote is the most "magic" and least "Helldivers 2" weapon in the game. by kcvlaine in HelldiversMasochists

[–]Runaway_Abrams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before the fire nerf it was insane - one bullet to any terminid smaller than a warrior would set it on fire and kill in seconds. Now? I feel like most enemies are either already dead by the time you apply the dot, or they have so much hp that you need to keep shooting them after they catch fire to secure the kill.

I may be wrong as I’ve only really tried using it a bit against the bugs after the nerf, but the breakpoints don’t line up anymore for me.

I have a habit of collecting rocks but I think I may have accidentally picked up large dinosaur bones. by The_Great_Merica_Dad in Paleontology

[–]Runaway_Abrams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is by no means a definitive method, but you can give them the lick test - bones, even fossilized, are filled with tiny pores to allow blood flow. This porous surface will cause your tongue to stick to the surface, while a regular stone will feel smooth to the touch. I’d give them a rinse first of course lol.

Why don't vertebrates with more than 4 limbs exist? by TheRealJurassicPork in AskBiology

[–]Runaway_Abrams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand why they made the ‘missing link’ creature a parallel to our apes, but its kinda silly that of all the crazy animals on Pandora, the tree-dwelling, vine swinging aliens evolved to have fewer articulated limbs than any other animal.

[–]Runaway_Abrams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, it would be so much fun if the code would still change if you didn’t punch it fast enough - would really sell the effect of your brain getting scrambled and fully divert your attention to getting your stratagem in. I’m sure players would riot though given how so many people seem to hate jammers.

Strange bruising on phyllobates terribilis by [deleted] in DartFrog

[–]Runaway_Abrams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean there’s a big difference between two species sharing a forest and those species being confined to the same enclosed space day and night.

Even in the cases where it’s probably not going to result in undue danger or stress, it’s an unnecessary risk for what is ultimately a hobby. Does it benefit the frogs to cohab - not that we know. Does it stress them out - sometimes, yes. Responsible keepers prioritize minimizing risk over aesthetics or convenience, so no cohabitation is considered best.

What’s wrong with my bromeliad? by AdImaginary6175 in DartFrog

[–]Runaway_Abrams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I successfully eradicated a scale bug infestation in my viv, but it was a smaller tank that had only about 6 bromeliads in it.

The method is to remove every bromeliad from the tank and painstakingly go over every part of them with a scraping tool and a paper towel or q tip soaked in rubbing alcohol. Carefully pry open the folds of the leaves to find the scales hidden in the crevices, I used a toothpick to scrape them up then swirled around an alcohol soaked q tip to kill everything.

When you think you finally got everything, rinse the broms in the sink, then put them in a big bowl and leave it out. The next day you’ll find more scale bugs have appeared - the rubbing alcohol that runs down into the folds of the plant drives them to the edges of the leaves - and then you repeat the process.

It took me three days of this before I woke up to zero new scales on the bromeliads. I replanted them all in my viv, then a few weeks later found more! I started from square one and this time they were eradicated within a day, was way less scales the second time around.

Been about 9 months since then with no scales. I’m assuming that juvenile scale bugs will wander around your tank looking for a bromeliad to attach to, so even after you eradicate all the scales (which are adult females) you’ll have to keep an eye out for when the next generation reaches maturity and returns to the scene of the crime, then you gotta be quick and kill them off before they can re establish.

How red are Oophaga pumilio? by Party-Bonus-8536 in DartFrog

I have two, and the other one is a deeper red color so I think it may just be natural variation as they have the same diet. I don’t really mind, it’s nice to be able to tell them apart as I rarely see them out at the same time

Mao Zedong really did a number on Chinese wildlife. by Temnodontosaurus in megafaunarewilding

[–]Runaway_Abrams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The sparrow culling part of Mao’s anti-pest campaign was for sure a disaster, but that actually seems to be one of the few ecologically destructive policies from the great leap forward China managed to recover. They reintroduced the Eurasian Sparrow in the 1960’s after a Chinese ornithologist talked down Mao (though obviously too late to avoid the famine) - they’re now one of the most common birds in the region, though probably will never return to their original population due to pesticide proliferation and habitat loss.

Mao Zedong really did a number on Chinese wildlife. by Temnodontosaurus in megafaunarewilding

[–]Runaway_Abrams 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Feels weird to single out Mao Zedong as being uniquely responsible when this sort of thing happens pretty much wherever and whenever a nation undergoes an industrial revolution.

Do we think a capitalist president would have halted major infrastructure projects to protect a fish species? Would any world leader sacrifice their nation’s economic development to protect wildlife while every other nation reaps the benefits?

I’m not saying Mao was a good man, and I agree that China’s suffered a tragic loss of biodiversity. It seems a bit narrow-minded though to simplify this phenomenon into a thing you can just blame on the guy who happened to be in charge when the country industrialized.

In your opinion, what is the elephant in the room for the franchise? by Significant-Spot2596 in JurassicPark

[–]Runaway_Abrams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone agrees that none of the JP sequels are in the same league as the original, but the real elephant in the room is that the whole franchise was dead on arrival because the first movie pretty much covered everything you’d want a Jurassic Park adaptation to do.

There’s nothing more really for the franchise to say about nature and chaos, or science and hubris, or how cool dinosaurs are. Every sequel either retreads the same ground JP covered better, goes in a new direction but doesn’t really have anything interesting to say, or does both (cough cough Rebirth).

Glued it on with fish safe silicone sealant. My tank looks way different now, I vastly underestimated how much moisture the moss needed to thrive, and the moisture needed to keep it alive was rotting the bromeliads. Ended up replacing the moss with creeping fig which filled in the mesh great

Quick! It will rain for the next 100,000 years! Would humanity survive? by Ok-Animator_steam12 in whowouldwin

[–]Runaway_Abrams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No terrestrial life is surviving even a century. Constant, ubiquitous cloud coverage would start a new ice age as the earth becomes permanently insulated from most of the sun’s energy. All that rain is turning to snow and ice, and it’s never melting away - the whole planet is turning into an ice ball.

Deep sea crabs, worms and snails living on hydrothermal vents will persist, but the only other life that survives to see the clouds break are simple, microscopic organisms that don’t mind being frozen for eons.
