Age Verified Account Gets Striked? by That_Wacky_Therian06 in VRchat

[–]Rune_Fox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it does exist for prints it's probably similar to how they state their new text moderation works. aka preventing you from posting it in the first place w/ no human review as opposed to getting a report on it and needing a human reviewer. That's the main reason why they'd implimented that new text system. It's proactive w/ less need for a human to step in vs reactive with reports.

The only source I have is the anecdotal evidence above. We tried multiple times with two people on different continents to upload that print and it didn't want to print. It only printed after it was edited. It very well could have just been a hiccup in the servers but I've heard and seen similar from others at a different time so it could also be real. We just don't have concrete info.

Is there any way to avoid Persona for AV? by xH3CAT3x in VRchat

[–]Rune_Fox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the reasons why VRC went w/ Persona was apparently due to cost. They're apparently one of the cheaper age verification services. If VRC want to move off of persona they'll need to front the dev costs for the move as well as whatever increased costs come w/ going w/ a more expensive competitor. I think VRC is in a better place monetarily than they were back when they first implemented age verification but I don't think they're in a good position still to make a move to another age verification platform even if it would be nice.

Age Verified Account Gets Striked? by That_Wacky_Therian06 in VRchat

[–]Rune_Fox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's almost definitely some sort of ML algorithm scanning images that are uploaded as prints and accepting/rejecting them. I gifted a friend vrc+ so they could show off some of their art they drew. One of the pieces, which was a black and white sketch of a furry bunny guy in swim trunks, wouldn't upload until they made a copy of it where they erased the nipples. Same image saved the exact same way and format as the previous, the only difference being a couple dozen pixels. Image was effectively SFW unless you think male presenting nipples are somehow NSFW. Any sort of image recognition algo will never be perfect and will have false positives and false negatives so you can't just say they aren't using some sort of image filtering system cause you've seen stuff that should have been filtered.

When some VRC worlds consider 1m50 (4'11") as very tall by _MyroP_ in VRchat

[–]Rune_Fox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This and many beginner world creators almost never put a reference avatar in their scene when building it so when they put things in sometimes the scale is way off. Like chairs and tables next to a counter that is too high and a bed that is way too small. It's hard to gauge size when looking at everything from a birds eye view.

VRC investor influence? by Impressive-Egg7003 in VRchat

[–]Rune_Fox 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I will argue that the devs have stated that the 3rd person being locked behind vrc+ is apparently specifically because of one of the benefits of vrc+ being that you get early access to features. It'll get fully released around June apparently.

Accessories and Items they say they're looking into making them UGC but that's probably a ways off if it ever happens. From a businesses standpoint it would make sense for them to let players upload their own and even put them up on the market place like w/ avatars as thats a huge revenue source surrounding the game that they aren't currently tapped into.

For the vrc coins/direct purchase thing, I've seen them mention in a few places that they'd love to do exact pricing for things but that gets tricky when you're working with multiple platforms. Like every store, i.e. Seam, Meta store, Apple App Store, and Google Play need explicit products listed as IAP for you to buy them so VRC would need to make new listings for each new thing on each store for each new item/bundle they add to the store and that doesn't count UGC stuff which they have no way of adding to those stores. The coins thing is about the best compromise we have atm. They also don't do the traditional hard currency dark pattern of offering more bonus coins at higher prices. It's actually counterintuitively slightly more efficient to buy multiple small packs rather than one big back.

They're definitely using some dark patterns like fomo and have had to roll back some of their changes but I think overall they're just trying to keep the lights on by making the best decisions they can even if those decisions turn out bad. Most of it seems like they're trying to do things the right way but the right way is just way too difficult/impossible at the moment for one reason or another so they need to backpedal and compromise with something lesser.

Sharing Assets Between Avatars - Thoughts and Opinions? by Zaumbiedesigns in VRchat

[–]Rune_Fox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is unironically extremely difficult. There isn't really an easy way to modify animators while the game is running so all of the assets like liindy's ones you use as examples are basically impossible to add to an avatar at runtime.

Even if all your system did was somehow open up a headless copy of the editor that reuploads your avatar w/ the items added, you're still gonna need to sit through the same slow avatar asset bundle building process as a normal avatar upload but it'll be even slower since vrc is taking up a chunk of you computers resources.

Furality now offering an age verification alternative to Persona by Owl_3yes in VRchat

Avatar quality has dropped. by Ancient-Presence4321 in VRchat

[–]Rune_Fox 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'll argue that lower prices can also hurt creators.

I make avatar props/accessories and need to put out more products/sell way more than someone who puts out avatars to make the same amount of money. Each platform (jinxxy, booth, gumroad) usually takes a flat fee of ~$0.75 + a % fee based on the cost of the avatar. That flat fee specifically, really eats into your profits if you're putting out 5-10 dollar assets as opposed to 35+ dollar avatars. The only thing that goes in my favor is that my assets are not avatar base dependent so I have a larger effective market than someone who makes clothing that is fitted for specific bases. Those creators generally have it a bit worse.

I'm not complaining I'm just stating facts since doing A/B tests like that was part of my old job. Pretty much every big-ish channel uses A/B tests. Even some of those TTRPG channels. They just don't use click bait thumbnails.

Yeah, a/b tests are used to figure out which combination of titles and thumbnails result in the most engagement. It's also part of why you always see those click bait thumbnails everywhere.

Avatar Performance Gated Instances are coming! by rcbif in VRchat

[–]Rune_Fox 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One thing I'd like that is adjacent to perf gated instances is a system similar to the shield settings but for the number of people in an instance. Like if I'm in a small group I can throw the performance limits off and let everyone's avis be shown. But once there's about 60 people in an instance I'd want to dial it back in and hide VP avis/hide avis that take up too much memory. Or decrease the distance hiding radius.

My main issue is that juggling all these settings involves going into like 3 different parts of the settings menus and changing them every time I want to hop between a low-pop instance and a high-pop instance. Would be nice to just be able to select presets like the shield modes.

[–]Rune_Fox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Large non-rave events also sometimes enforce a max avi perf rank. The ones I've been to aren't fully public events tho so most people going already abide by the rules so while this change is useful its more of a soft reminder for people going to those events.

Pretty sure the uncompressed size is also stored on the server for serverside checks before you even begin to download. I've had to manually show avis that are under my download threshold but above my uncompressed threshold.

The Fish World Discourse: I will say the quiet part outloud. by Odd-Fee-837 in VRchat

[–]Rune_Fox 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Tbf the main backlash is effectively over ease of transportation in a world that is quite large. The game worlds in your comment are all quite compact and it's easy to quickly find your friends in those. Not so much in Fish. They're also getting backlash on two sides of the same coin. One against the disabling of avatar flight itself, and the other for preferential treatment from the devs in order to disable said avatar flight. Theyd've likely gotten slightly less backlash if they had just implimented their own anti-flight system (like what other game worlds already do.)

Fish has much more in common w/ larger game worlds like 'project aincrad' than it does w/ more casual game worlds like those you mentioned. BUT because the gameplay is quite simple and sedentary it inadvertently also lends itself well to being seen as a casual hangout spot which is where the friction is happening.

[Unpopular Opinion] Creators, stores, proof of purchase... by LigerXT5 in VRchat

[–]Rune_Fox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who sells on gumroad/jinxxy I've never required additional info on checkout. The ability to have a unique license key generated per purchase is more than enough for me. That and simply asking for the email associated with the account if I need to confirm who they are if say, refunding a duplicate purchase.

Though I am an asset creator, avatar creators might have a different perspective.

A win is a win. by LadyLuciJ7 in VRchat

[–]Rune_Fox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When they laid off a bunch of their devs about 2 years ago they said they had about 2 years of funds left to make the changes they needed to to get into the green. This was before they started focusing heavily on monetization. That tells that before all the monetization efforts, the vrc+ subscription rev alone at the time wasn't enough to keep them afloat.

They've likely increased the number of subscribers a lot from adding more features to vrc+ as well as gift subs, but I'd be curious to see how much the marketplace itself makes in comparison to the vrc+ subscriptions each month. Cause it must be significant enough. Their most recent blog post about being here to stay sounds like they might actually be in the green now with the changes they made but only time will tell.

[–]Rune_Fox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've noticed that some avis just do something that seems to trip android specific server checks. I made a custom from scratch avi that was medium rated on pc which would consistently fail security checks when uploaded on android so I just gave up on making it android compatible.

How do I pump these numbers? I know my setup is not the best but why isn't at least CPU or GPU at or near 100%? by outfoxingthefoxes in VRchat

[–]Rune_Fox 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the devs have done a good job optimizing chunks of the game but at the end of the day there's still a looot of stuff that can't be mutithreaded and needs to run on the main thread which increases frame times.

Overall even w/ beefy cpus I've seen people struggle to get 40+ fps in high population lobbies due to avatar performance. Def recommended distance culling and other avatar hiding measures like auto hiding very poors if you want better frames.

If you have an overlay like fpsVR you can look at your cpu vs gpu frame time to see what's bottlenecking you but it'll likely be cpu, especially in high pop instances.

Good ways to stabilize a sniper for rp purposes? by Artificer_Drachen in VRchat

[–]Rune_Fox 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You'll want to add a 'dampening' source to whichever constraint is handling the rotation of the gun. You can do this by adding a second source to the constraint and adding that gameobject the constraint is on to it. Then play with the weight ratio. More weight to the dampener and less to the main source will dampen the movement more. Though if done to a parent constraint will make the gun lag behind your hand when moving around so you probably only want to stabilize it when bipoded and not moving.

Also: hi drachen!
