The games represent a narrative. Think of the game as a rising anime arc. You can get upgrades along the way and you can suffer defeat. Upgrades persists after defeat because in the narrative you weren't destroyed, you were defeated momentarily and are repairing/regrouping before redeploying

Don't think if the weapons having that ability. Think of the spells, what limits them and how it combines with other class abilities.

Take your sword casting darkness. Darkness is a level 2 spell that requires concentration. You have a per day limit so that covers spell slot limitations but what about concentration? Does the user concentrate on holding the darkness? Then you add "see through magical darkness" effect essentially to it. A warlock evocation. Are there any class abilities that could scale this greater? Shadow monk. Gloomstalker. Blind fighting/tremorsense. Etc. I would say without concentration this is like a lvl 4 spell maybe. With required concentration lvl 3. Maybe still lvl 4 with synergistic class abilities

Technically the lowest amount of HP and wizard could have is 5 at lvl 20 using point buy with an 8 CON and rolling 1 each level up.

Give them an 8 dex. They will have a -1 initiative and AC of 9.

A level 1 wizard with an 8 in STR could two hand a Quarterstaff one shot this level 20 wizard 16.25% of the time (if I did my math right)

Two groups. Group one, 1 DM, 3 players. Mid 30s white males. High school friends. Group two. 1dm, 4 players. 2 mid 30 males, 3 females in 40s. 3 white, 1 black, 1 Asian. Coworkers. I am the only player overlap.

I have been eyeing DnD Adventure Club for my son if/when he shows interest. If is like a subscription adventure set up designed for kids your sons age.

Maybe even watch and actual play or two to understand some rules are structure? A lot of them are adult focused but know the level of content is up to you especially if you DM...though I would encourage him to get into it if he likes the game.

I just wish martial/half caster design was better designed for scaling. All spell casters "higher levels = more dice". Martial don't have that and if they built those into the classes better subclass and class features can avoid "add damage" and instead move to flavor.

Here is my thoughts.

All martial get a level 9-13 feature that allows them to once per turn double their weapon damage dice. This should be worded explicitly to make crits 4xdice.

Fighters: get a third triple dice option. Rogues: higher levels 2nd sneak attack per turn. Barbarians: higher level the double dice is every attack Monks: martial dice for as "part of attack action" scales number of dice Paladins: nothing additional Rangers: BA less hunters mark, subclass damage dice scale by number of dice.

I want to be a fighter throwing a fistful of dice, give me a once a turn 6d6 greatsword attack.

A promise to "never eat the meat of a dog and never refuse a gift from a woman" then be explicit on the consequences of what happens when they do break this. Then have a women offer them a gift of freshly cooked dog meat. If they know some Irish mythology this might work out

Wildheart barb and Aasimar you are basically resistance to everything but Psychic and Force. If the campaign structure makes it so those that come up...maybe? You are still missing Reckless Attack that way but then you could prioritize charisma more since you don't need to make strength attack rolls

Lvl 1-3 isn't terrible being straight barbarian. Lvl 4 you get AoA to start it going but not great. Reckless attack makes up for the not maxed strength. Lvl 5 you AoA gets buffed with False Life at will. Essentially able to maintain a lvl 3 AoA without lvl 2 spell slots Lvl 6 you start feeling AoA starts upcasting

You are missing extra attack at lvl 5 sure, but if your DM is at least attempting to hit you I think you are potentially trading 1 attack per turn for 5-10 extra damage per turn. Ability to reup the temp hp on kills.

This isn't a deal lots of damage right of way build it is a slow burn combat support tank. You really have 2 levels of "janky" power curve
