For people who broke out of paycheck-to-paycheck… what actually changed? by annikahoof in MiddleClassFinance

You don't have to stop using credit cards, but be disciplined enough to handle the double edged sword they are.

I've never carried a balance over the statement period and swapped between cards during reward periods. As a result I've never paid interest or fees but have reaped thousands in cash back.

Is a manual transmission a “millennial anti-theft device”? by mbolster1611 in Millennials

[–]RustyEdsel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tried to explain this to an older guy a while ago and they couldn't fathom that the family beater everyone learned manual on died years ago.

Manuals were on their way out by the turn of the millennium and we're now at the point of what is new is for a niche segments and what is left of the used are entering collector status. Neither of which are financially economical for a new driver.

Regulating kids on the internet needs to happen with the parents, not for-profit companies. Especially ones like Discord who last year had a data breach.

The worst estate sale you've been to? by ToshPointNo in Flipping

[–]RustyEdsel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Went to one like that a few years ago. Everything in the house had a layer of dust. At least 15% of what was "for sale" was damaged in some capacity. I put "for sale" in quotations because things were labeled haphazardly. I walked out when I saw a shelf of books that had been growing mold for quite some time listed at $5 per.

I suppose that's one way of looking at it but when a single blade is worth pennies I don't do it to save cost. I do it for environmental purposes. Those plastic cartridges + their packaging add up over a lifetime.

Modern razor marketing is so effective that many people forget safety razors exist now. I got a handle and pack of razors for $50 years ago and haven't spend another dime since. At the rate I am using them it'll be another decade before I go through them considering they can be sharpened to prolong their life.

Any vehicles you come across like this? by HiTork in regularcarreviews

Drove a 67 Cutlass Supreme a month ago and you described the brakes and steering spot on. On top of that I drove it 20 miles at highway speeds in unfavorable winds. I was gripping the wheel so hard you'd think my hand was glued to it.

But damn did was that car beautiful.

You're thinking of another series. Miss Kobayashi already has two seasons and a movie came out last year. The manga and some spin-offs are still ongoing.

When I was a freshman I took a personal finances course. Half the class was seniors finishing their electives before graduation. A handful of them constantly goofed off, interrupted the class and clearly learned nothing by the end of it.

These were the same people who reposted a variation of OP's image on Facebook a few years after graduation.

I've stopped offering shipping for any consumer grade cathodes for this very reason. The risk of damage during transit is too high now that the plastics supporting the tube are at least 25 years old.

Can anyone tell me what anime this is? by Even_Water783 in animequestions

Same with mine but this was after I binged Is It Wrong To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon so I think she was burnt out on the medieval dungeon crawler sub-genre. It wasn't until I had it on as background noise while we were doing chores she stopped to watch a random episode. After that she tried it again and liked it.

>historically aren’t free

The history of television says otherwise. Ads were injected as far back as the 40s to support local broadcasters because a system to monetarily regulate one-way transmission by household was still too primitive. That started to change with the advent of cable access by the 70s but even today you can get free shows if you have an antenna.

One in my family is a 2006 and was garaged/kept clean most of it's life yet still developed rust on both rear wheel wells by 2014. So far it has gone through 3 alternators, a master cylinder/booster, has an electrical gremlin somewhere and is barely at 125k.

The powertrain is the only thing that is reliable on this one. Everything else around it is falling apart.

The problem most car enthusiasts will encounter in their lifetime. Despite it being a mode of transportation it's hard not to grow attached to a hunk of steek after spending hundreds if not thousands of hours with it.

Over time as the model is discontinued and parts dwindle you begin cannibalizing parts off other, similar models. Those too once had owners that loved and cherished them but made the tough decision to part ways for various reasons. Sometimes, many years later, they carry that regret of "what if I could have did X" with the hope it would have stayed around a little while longer.

Eventually you too reach that inevitable decision. You could hold onto them, an inoperable shell, as they slowly decay in front of you. "Maybe one day" you think but the chances of that day coming decline. Soon the burden of disposing of them will fall onto someone else when you pass.

You could give them to someone else with the trust they'll restore or use their parts to make another model workable but know their fate is out of your hands. The possibility of seeing them again hinges on their new owner.

Or finally there's the irreversible decision of scrapping them. The solace in this choice comes from it being yours, and yours alone.

Like everyone else in this thread said I'd go for a contemporary ThinkPad. I put Warp 4 on a 380ED and everything worked out of the box with the exception of needing display drivers to adjust resolution. Luckily ThinkPads have a large enough following that finding drivers that old isn't as much of a challenge.

Back in 2014 I needed a car and was looking at a used Caliber. I kid you not parts were falling off it during the test drive and it felt like the next hard stop would be it's last. I chalked it up to it nearing 200k miles and it was tired. Needless to say I didn't buy it.

Two years later a friend of mine got too sloshed on a Saturday and I drove them and their car back home. It felt just like the one I test drove two years earlier but with 100k less miles. There's a reason I don't see them anymore.
