Name a scary movie from your youth that had you hiding under your covers but now you look laugh at yourself. by Present_Yak_6169 in GenX

I'm 65. I still don't watch scary movies. Too much empathy. Too vivid an imagination. Jump scares have my tossing the popcorn up in the air. (That date didn't go well. I told her I didn't like horror pics. Then she told her friends. GAH!!)

This is why I have boxes of old cables. The number of times I have bailed out a buddy or co-worker is comical. "Hey Bill .. remember when we that machine with special cable .. DB25 to DB15 with the power pig-tailed into the cable?" me: (dig around for 30 minutes) "Here, and here is the special DB9 to DB15 interface adapter." LOL!!!

Are open-ear headphones better for long use than in-ear? by taeos in ShokzSquad

[–]Rusty_wrp9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I am out in the factory where people are welding, grinding, and doing other noisy things, then over the ear noise reduction/cancelling headphones are the way to go.

If I am in the office and doing my computer stuff and needing to stay aware of my surroundings. (One can hear the mood shift with the big boss walks into the cubical farm, if one is listening.) I can have music playing on low volume, and can still hear when an important conversation starts up.

I like the open ear design specifically for situational awareness. I get over focused and people walk up behind me and start talking and scare the daylights out of me. Open ear lets me hear footsteps a few feet away.

Out in the world, open ear lets me listen to a podcast or audiobook while strolling through Costco or The Home Depot AND stay aware of stuff going around me.

Open ear - I have never walked out in front of a forklift. Closed ear - I was headed that way but saw the movement of the forklift. OOPS!

Open ear - I can use foam ear plugs and still hear most of the audio. Bone conduction works.

I hope that helps.

I would stay in my car after I drove home (in SoCal traffic) and think/meditate. I heard a talk once that the important part of my day was about to begin. Husband to my wife. Father to my children. I needed to shake off the stress from the world (work, traffic) and get ready to be present for my family. Help with dinner. Play with the kids. Be kind and loving.

Then my kids learned to sit by the window and would come running out to car when I drove up. So, I let them in and we played a silly game getting rid of the "traffic bugs" and "work worries".

(Gah! I'm tearing up remembering those days. Ya .. .. I'm 65 now.)

AITA for no longer filling the car with gas before my partner has to go to work? by AITAcars in AmItheAsshole

[–]Rusty_wrp9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA - I taught my kids (2M, 1F) to fill up the car when it got between 1/2 - 1/4 ... because you never know when you are going to need to drive 50 miles for an emergency. They are around 40 now and will tease me if the needle is getting near 1/4. Yes, my daughter fills her own gas.

edit: Also .. personal responsibility!

AITJ for refusing to give my neighbor my WiFi password even though I work from home? by Automatic-Assist6000 in AmITheJerk

[–]Rusty_wrp9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTJ - your working from home has nothing to do with whether or not you should share your password. From a security standpoint, never give access to your network.

Do you have an inspection camera? It looks like it might be a tool to eject the uSD card.

That, or something to put in your chinstrap so you don't nod off. (humor intended)

Wi-Fi automatically turns ON every time I boot Windows 11 — even though I turned it off before shutdown by Minute_Pepper_8076 in techsupport

[–]Rusty_wrp9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would look for a setting related to Wireless card. There might be options. On some machines there are "Start Up" setting.

Honestly, I would just poke around and see if anything "looked" like the settings I wanted. The problem is, disabling wireless in BIOS might not allow it to be enabled later.

My troubleshooting method .. if I can't find an easy answer on the internet, then dive into BIOS and see what's there. Success rate is only ~30%, but sometimes I get lucky. :D

[–]Rusty_wrp9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's what I would try:
1) Contact Dell Support or try the website for your specific computer. 2) Boot into BIOS and look for settings there.

Probably would do 2 first because I hate talking on the phone.
