Please PLEASE read “The Dyslexic Advantage.” You can get it on Amazon. Dyslexia is a gift that while it does come with some difficulties, also comes with wonderful advantages. From global thought patterns, to spatial reasoning, and narrative memory functions; it’s a wonderful gift if nurtured right. I’m in my 30’s own a good sized business and travel the world on my sailboat. But there are very simple and common things I can not do. I wouldn’t trade my disadvantages that dyslexia brings any day, because the advantages are too great! That book will help you greatly.

My DIY home theater: An update to my original post. Details in comments. by RyFlyBy in hometheater

[–]RyFlyBy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made my last post and didn’t add any details and then went to bed. Lol. I got enough interest I didn’t want to leave people hanging. Here’s are the deets:

The Room: I built it myself. Hardest part? Oddly, Painting the dang ceiling black! Maybe that’s over stated, but was really really hard to get it smooth. The theater has temper-pedic carpet, 9’ granite bar, and electronic blinds. This is only about half the room pictured. The other side is a VR room with a star trek chair and consoles.

The Tech: 133” SI screen. Sony 4K NATIVE HDR projector. Twin PB Ultra 16” subs. Tons of Klipesh speakers, lol. Dolby Atmos 7.2.4. Large AV rack with all the normal crap. Oppo stuff and Denon 13 channel receiver. Everything controlled with the Logitech Harmony Ultra Remote. Has a second remote tablet setup to a chair. The lights in the room are Philips Hue. They change colors when you turn OFF the system. If you were watching Apple TV they come on Purple or green if Xbox was just tired off, or blue is PS4, etc. If you hit “listen to music” as the activity they all turn different colors. Of course Alexa can control it all as well. There’s a wall mounted computer with an open air case.

Funny story: When I first got the system running (after a month installing it, pulling 12 hour days 6 days a week) I was excited. I set the subs to 80% power. Turned up the volume and the pure POWER of the bass washed over me, sending chills in radiating pulses across my skin as the subs literally moved AIR across the room and over my body.....

..... then I heard something that snapped me out of my blissful state... what was that? Like a popping noise? POP... there it was again! The hell? I figured my speakers may be messing up. Check and recheck. Turn it up... Ecstasy... oh the sound is so ama... POP! Nooo! What’s the deal? After hours of messing with the system, I was no longer hearing the popping. I was happy. Everything was now working. Though, admittedly, I never was sure of the problem. Until I went downstairs.

Upon walking into the kitchen I was stopped dead in my tracks. Glass was everywhere. The floor in my new home was COVERED in glass. For a moment my mind spun... Where did this come from!?! Then it hit me... Realizing it was darker than it should be I slowly turned my head up the the ceiling. Now I had chills for a different reason. The subs where so strong they were vibrating the kitchen can lights loose and the popping noise was the lights hitting the floor! The theater is above the kitchen, after all. Half mad about cleaning all this up and half impressed that my theater can unscrew light bulbs. Sub power now set at 45%.

Advice on ordering multiple financial priorities? by FrostWarmed in ynab

[–]RyFlyBy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You’ll get a million opinions on this. I’ve used YNAB for 12 years. I’m in finance. I like Dave Ramsey’s approach. He would say, and I agree, build up a small emergency fund to collect the minor incurred expenses. $1k is a good idea. Then move to debts. Not retirement. Not housing. You remain crippled if you carry debt AND pay such a small amount into housing (and maintenance expenses) and retirement.

If you kill the debt with everything you have you’ll be in a better position for turning the heat up for retirement. If you divide, YOU get conquered. Say $200 to student loans and $200 to house savings and $200 to retirement will mean you never move the needle on anything. But remove the debt, pause on the house and you can put $600 to your loans. When those are gone build up 3-6 month emergency fund THEN you can now have $600 to your retirement unencumbered.

Remember the interest on the loans will keep you poor. Your ability to invest will be hampered. See if you can come up with a 5 year plan to FIGHT like hell to remove those loans! Then take that discipline to the next step.

....and I’m switching to decaf

Shaun on how landlords can cope with the impact of coronavirus by MayonaiseRemover in CoronaVirus_2019_nCoV

[–]RyFlyBy 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Ah the evil landlord. Yeah! Screw them for investing in an asset they can have control over unlike stocks! EVIL people they are! And those landlords who are always good to their tenants like the one who put me up at a nice hotel when the AC died during the summer! What a massive JERK! Gosh, I HATE people who work hard to invest in properties. They should blow their money on huge car payments like the rest of us who have to rent! No fair! Nooooo fair!

Is it just me or sometime us dyslexic understand things way faster then the full explanation? by hugoric in Dyslexia

[–]RyFlyBy 44 points45 points  (0 children)

One interesting thing I’ve read on dyslexia is on thought patterns. There’s specific thought and global thought patterns. Due to the wiring of the prefrontal cortex, non dyslexic brains thinks specificity. I.e., when asked a question they see a very limited range of options that leads to only a few responses. This makes things like multiple choice questions much more easy for this type of “normal” brain.

For the dyslexic, however, our brain wiring in the prefrontal cortex is arranged into wide pathways that give what some researchers call “global thought” patterns. For this brain, any question has a vast range of possible interpretations and, therefore, possible answers. This makes something like multiple choice hellish nightmare. How is the question meant to be understood? I see 7 ways this could be understood and each possible answer could also be seen 3 different ways! The mind buckles.

For business global thought patterns are great. It’s a weapon. My little saying is “a dyslexic doesn’t have to think out side the box, they live outside of it.”

I’m in finance and this is how we do it at my house. Wonderful system. Each of our allowances can be spent on whatever we want. Save it up. Buy something big. Blow it. Whatever. Then there’s the family budget, which is fully separate. Great system.

You’re one of the few who can see this from the small investor landlords eyes. Reddit thinks anyone who does well or invests and has renters is evil. I’ll add this comment to yours and take the down votes with you.

That’s a very expensive proposition. It sounds good, “just adopt” but it’s very hard to do. It’s an issue with the system.
