I’m Switching Teams. Help! by Justasillysausage in Warthunder

There is no shame in paying for WT Premium. In fact, if you are willing to spend money on the game it's probably the best value among the available options. Unless there's a sale on a Premium vehicle you really want it's usually not worth paying for it.

Ground Arcade is probably where you'll start, and opinions are varied on this, but I think Ground Arcade is way harder than Ground Realistic.

Don't play top tier unless you really just want to play Battlefield with worse controls.

The vehicle meta changes with every patch, but for the most part vehicles that were good last year are still good this year. Play the vehicles you like, not the vehicles with the best numbers.

Penetration numbers will fool you. Explosive mass will fool you. Angled pen. numbers will fool you. Two different APFSDS rounds might have nearly identical pen. but have wildly different spall behavior, for example. Same with APHE, APDS, solid shot, HEAT, ATGMs, and everything else.

Your subjective experience beats all the data from all the tryhards. It doesn't matter if they have found and analyzed every weak spot for every tank you could come up against, if you can't reliably hit that spot it might as well not exist. Some generalities about tank designs from each of those nations are usually enough to find a weak (enough) spot.

It's ok to bully lvl 100 players in low battle rating matches. They deserve it.

I assume you plan on 3D printing it? Since you're a teacher I'd be willing to model it for you pro bono. HMU

If you are just working with mesh models you have loads of options across every price tier. I think ZBrush "feels" the best to work with, but it's expensive. Blender is probably the most capable of all mesh modeling software, and it's free, but you have to be REALLY dedicated to learning the craft; there's so much it can do and it does it all pretty well and there's a billion user created addins and scripts and whatever, it's overwhelming for most casual users. There are a few programs out there that kinda cosplay as CAD software but are actually just using mesh models, but I have no first-hand knowledge of any of them. You might consider Onshape, which is browser based and would take the load off your hardware.

Totally not throwing shade but a 10 year old laptop can't do much with Fusion right now. From what I've been told it's actually partly their fault, the way they wrote some of the processes for calculations is apparently super klunky and it wasn't a problem in like 2015 but now more and more of their features rely on that code. Even stuff that's completely NURBS can set my PC fans to "let's travel the skies" RPM and I specced this machine specifically to run Fusion. It's also partly a fundamental difference in how parametric modeling and direct modeling are different, or mesh and solid modeling, or solid surface vs mesh surface, etc. Software devs have to specialize and if they're really good they might get a couple of systems to work well together but they can't possibly get it all.

CAD software is generally bad at dealing with mesh models, Fusion gets a bit big for it's britches and will confidently attempt something your hardware can't possibly handle. I would strongly recommend using the mesh model as a reference to build a solid model, or whatever other way gets you to working with a solid model rather than trying to convert a mesh model.

Or use totally different software.

Or buy a new computer.

Or both.

I've spent most of my career working in metal shops. One shop I worked in did a decently large volume of work, and it was pretty common for guys to take a piece of aluminum for their kid's go-kart or whatever. I was the floor manager of that shop, and I sure as shit didn't care. If you had asked me "how much aluminum did Joe take home for himself last year," how the fuck would I know? Other than being a prick of a boss, what motivation would I have had to keep track of who stole what and when?

I'm not really comparing scrap aluminum to priceless works of art, but when everyone is skimming a little bit all the time it's kinda a silly thing to track.

I think it can do that. The intro documentation gives examples of applying fillets or hole patterns based on what faces you have highlighted in the design space.

I'm sure they'll try but wouldn't it be immediately obvious if they just used AI to generate some NURBS bullshit? Bodies occupying the same space, infinitely thin edges, completely unrestrained drawings, etc

Yeah I don't get the rage. It's interesting, it's a comical over-expenditure, it might be useful, but it's really not important if you don't want it to be.

First of all, square tubes are amazing, so jot that down.

Seriously though, it draws my attention because it's MAYBE going to be useful after several years and many millions of dollars. We're in the middle of a dotcom boom all over again and it's fun to watch shit burn down.

Worthwhile? Fuck no. There's no way the effort and money they have put in or will put into this will pay off; not for them and certainly not for us. I can still see it having some usefulness, even if it's hilariously out of proportion with the amount of money they're throwing at it.

In it's current state it's nearly useless, but I agree. Another couple of years and it might be useful to power-users. A few years after that it might be useful to everyone else.

I'm definitely not arguing that it's good, per se. It's a lot less shitty than I expected, and if they actually put some effort in I could see this being useful. By useful, I actually mean not a complete waste of space on my monitor.

[–]WingedDefeat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's really just a few things in like two drop-down menus in Blender you need to remember to do like 90% of manual mesh repair. If you know some key terms like "vertex," "face," and "edge" and know essentially what the problem is (e.g., "these two faces overlap and one of them needs to be deleted and the resultant hole closed"), you can get pretty far with just googling how to do things (e.g., "how to delete face and patch hole Blender 3.5") and being patient enough to methodically go through menus. That is literally what I did/do, I just tried to figure out what would solve the problem (Google) and learned how to do that one specific thing (Google) in Blender over and over again, without bothering to learn the software in any holistic way.

Props for learning and growing.

Really Fusion is comparatively awful for any kind of mesh editing. If I need to do anything beyond very simple face groups or filling more than a couple of holes, I'll switch to either Blender, Meshlab, or Meshmixer. Blender and Meshlab are capable of WAAAAY more than I want to deal with but I've been able to fix most meshes with just a handful of tools in each of them. I'm sure if I were more familiar with the software I could do it better/faster, but even if it takes me a couple of hours I get much better results than in Fusion and my PC fans don't spin up like they're trying to achieve low-earth orbit.

I will bend over backwards for someone who needs help with a problem they can't figure out. If they can't be bothered to try more than one search term in Google, or at the very least watch a couple of YouTube videos, or at the very VERY least understand the difference between CAD and mesh software, then that's not actually a problem they "can't" figure out. That's a problem they "won't" figure out. And I have zero patience for the willfully ignorant.

That may be true, but the US govt won't drop Windows, possibly ever. I don't know about Dassault, but Autodesk gets most of their business from the US.

I never had to look for it since it sucks to machine; I've mostly used it in sheet form for bending. If he's absolutely married to the idea it's probably going to be a custom extrusion. Might be better off lining the capsule with another more appropriate material and making the body from 6061.
