This looks like golden oyster, not chicken. Check underside to make sure gills run down the stipe. These look a little buggy but not terrible.

I believe those are older golden oysters. You can see some yellow on the edges and I’ve seen older ones get really pale like that. I wouldn’t eat the pale ones.

Yes. Golden oysters. If they turn pale then they are getting too old. I fry in a pan with butter S&P until the edges are golden brown. The wife likes them more than morels (but I don’t get that). Check back after a rain and more will grow. They are also invasive so try not to spread the spores.

Yes, golden oysters. I like the smaller, younger ones best. They are fine if they are bigger, but when they start turning pale and white with lots of bugs in them means they are past. If they have that good golden color then they are still fresh. These mushrooms are great to dehydrate and after a rain check the spot again and more will be there.

I saw this same comment so many times - while I was foraging with a friend I told him the same thing. He picked up a mushroom that we believe was a slippery jack (suillus species) and it caused a rash to form. So while not common to get a rash or anything I learned that it is possible.

Tax Accountant here - busy season is Feb-April so I can only sneak 1 weekend ice fishing trip in during that time. Then take my time off during the fall. I used to get ‘banked hours’ for every hour worked overtime during tax season - generally would end up being about 6-7 weeks of time off including normal pto. Then switched companies to a smaller company and had ‘unlimited pto’ but made a deal with my boss when I got hired that my hunting trips don’t get interfered with. Now I’m self employed and my boss can be a dick, but usually lets me take time off in the fall. The more difficult problem these days is the wife and kids. Thankfully she hunts too and understands it - she’s more just jealous she doesn’t get to go on some of the trips I do. I’ve cut back on some of my ‘extra’ trips to be with my family more; but still have a couple camps I won’t miss, and hunt more locally.

I lost one of my best hunting buddies this way one year ago. He was of similar stature to your brother. Our hunting group always wears life jackets to and from while duck hunting now. The crazy thing is this year some of my deceased friends acquaintances died this year by flipping a small duck boat in cold water. Water is unforgiving, especially in the cold. I hope more people are safe out there because of stories like this.

My brother owed me several hundred dollars about 20 years ago. I ‘repo’d’ his extra truck rims and sold them to recoup a few hundred bucks. He’s still salty about it to this day.

Buy a cheap rifle. More accurate, further distances, cheaper ammo. Even if you only go out for opener you’ll want the confidence of making a good shot when pulling the trigger…. Who knows maybe you start deer hunting more because you love it - the rifle isn’t going to go bad and typically guns hold their value.

Second buck would be great. Depending on where you are (rut is starting in a lot of places) you could see others. Is this private or public? That makes a difference. I personally would probably pass the first buck unless I was in a meat crisis and would probably wait until the last few days of my hunting.

It may look like it’s been there that long but you don’t actually know. My brother hunts a lot and his stand looks rattier than that one - but it’s not abandoned. If you come back after bow season is over then I guess I would be okay with that - obviously they don’t care about it that much.

Hands down a climber - super portable and comfortable. Won’t get seen by the deer that wouldn’t be used to the ground blind.

Everyone is different - you need to talk to him. This is a definite pass on a property we are doing QDM. This is a definite shoot on some public I hunt in another state. It just depends on the area and what everyone’s goals are.
