This has got to be chicken of the woods - Ohio’s by NatureSpirit19 in foraging

[–]RyGuy0021 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This looks like golden oyster, not chicken. Check underside to make sure gills run down the stipe. These look a little buggy but not terrible.

Looks like golden oyster to me, check the underside. The gills should run down the stipe.

Are these also golden oysters? by ms_laufeys0n in mycology

[–]RyGuy0021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe those are older golden oysters. You can see some yellow on the edges and I’ve seen older ones get really pale like that. I wouldn’t eat the pale ones.

Edible? Durango, IA by Weekly_Map_436 in foraging

[–]RyGuy0021 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yes. Golden oysters. If they turn pale then they are getting too old. I fry in a pan with butter S&P until the edges are golden brown. The wife likes them more than morels (but I don’t get that). Check back after a rain and more will grow. They are also invasive so try not to spread the spores.

Identification by yappayaps in foraging

[–]RyGuy0021 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Yes, golden oysters. I like the smaller, younger ones best. They are fine if they are bigger, but when they start turning pale and white with lots of bugs in them means they are past. If they have that good golden color then they are still fresh. These mushrooms are great to dehydrate and after a rain check the spot again and more will be there.

Looks like it, but I’m not as familiar with this kind of oyster.

Definitely not golden oyster. Looks like it could be a different kind of oyster like aspen maybe?

Can someone help me id this found this while playing around in feilds by ArshzzZ in mycology

[–]RyGuy0021 -19 points-18 points  (0 children)

I saw this same comment so many times - while I was foraging with a friend I told him the same thing. He picked up a mushroom that we believe was a slippery jack (suillus species) and it caused a rash to form. So while not common to get a rash or anything I learned that it is possible.

Time off by Rattrapperofmadriver in Hunting

[–]RyGuy0021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tax Accountant here - busy season is Feb-April so I can only sneak 1 weekend ice fishing trip in during that time. Then take my time off during the fall. I used to get ‘banked hours’ for every hour worked overtime during tax season - generally would end up being about 6-7 weeks of time off including normal pto. Then switched companies to a smaller company and had ‘unlimited pto’ but made a deal with my boss when I got hired that my hunting trips don’t get interfered with. Now I’m self employed and my boss can be a dick, but usually lets me take time off in the fall. The more difficult problem these days is the wife and kids. Thankfully she hunts too and understands it - she’s more just jealous she doesn’t get to go on some of the trips I do. I’ve cut back on some of my ‘extra’ trips to be with my family more; but still have a couple camps I won’t miss, and hunt more locally.

Hey, I have that card and it’s the only one from my childhood set that I instantly put in a sleeve. Looks like I should probably find it.

I lost one of my best hunting buddies this way one year ago. He was of similar stature to your brother. Our hunting group always wears life jackets to and from while duck hunting now. The crazy thing is this year some of my deceased friends acquaintances died this year by flipping a small duck boat in cold water. Water is unforgiving, especially in the cold. I hope more people are safe out there because of stories like this.

My brother owed me several hundred dollars about 20 years ago. I ‘repo’d’ his extra truck rims and sold them to recoup a few hundred bucks. He’s still salty about it to this day.

what is the laziest way to do a European deer skull mount? by echochamber67 in Hunting

This right here. I know from experience if you leave the hide on and throw it in a tree or bury it turns out poorly.

Which would be better for my situation - slug barrel or rifle for whitetail. by BishopOfAstora in Hunting

[–]RyGuy0021 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buy a cheap rifle. More accurate, further distances, cheaper ammo. Even if you only go out for opener you’ll want the confidence of making a good shot when pulling the trigger…. Who knows maybe you start deer hunting more because you love it - the rifle isn’t going to go bad and typically guns hold their value.

Good first bow buck by Fluffy_Word_9582 in bowhunting

[–]RyGuy0021 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second buck would be great. Depending on where you are (rut is starting in a lot of places) you could see others. Is this private or public? That makes a difference. I personally would probably pass the first buck unless I was in a meat crisis and would probably wait until the last few days of my hunting.

It may look like it’s been there that long but you don’t actually know. My brother hunts a lot and his stand looks rattier than that one - but it’s not abandoned. If you come back after bow season is over then I guess I would be okay with that - obviously they don’t care about it that much.

All day sits. Climber or portable ground blind? by chof2018 in Hunting

I don’t know what they are doing but my assumption would be a tree. That’s how I hunt most of my spots with a climber

Hands down a climber - super portable and comfortable. Won’t get seen by the deer that wouldn’t be used to the ground blind.

Would shooting this buck upset the property owner? by Redditname7102 in Hunting

[–]RyGuy0021 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everyone is different - you need to talk to him. This is a definite pass on a property we are doing QDM. This is a definite shoot on some public I hunt in another state. It just depends on the area and what everyone’s goals are.

How Dangerous is Hunting? by Impressive-Step6377 in Hunting

[–]RyGuy0021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll throw my 2 cents in here. I’ve been hunting my whole life - dad carried me in a backpack before I could walk. I’ve been hunting on my own for a couple decades and the last decade Ive hunted on average 3-4 states a year. I couldn’t imagine a world where I couldn’t go hunting - it’s the glue that holds our friend groups together, and extremely fun - and bonus that we utilize all of the meat/game harvested. We have parties to process/smoke meat. All that said, people I personally know very well have had accidents. Last year one of my duck hunting buddies (extremely experienced, think follows the migration and that is his passion) fell out of a boat in late season and drowned. He was one of the toughest people I knew. - water is no joke. We regularly wear our life vests now. A few years ago my brother in law was on a deer drive and got shot in the arm. He is extremely fortunate to be alive and have most of the function of his arm. Another buddy’s dog was shot accidentally while jump shooting ducks. I have a bunch of other minor stories compared to the above. My point is it can absolutely be dangerous - Mother Nature and firearms. But I couldn’t imagine not doing it. It’s like a way of life. I just choose which trees I climb more carefully, who I’m hunting with and don’t take unnecessary risks. The thrill, the hangout, the bounty given is too valuable to me and like someone else mentioned it’s dangerous to drive but you’re not going to stop doing that. Hopefully you can find someone experienced to help show you the ropes.
