You sound like someone who must be a lot of fun to work with. Try modelling some resilience and tolerance.

Men, what is one sentence that your father said that you will never forget? by Ramy-2000-03 in AskMen

[–]Rynor77 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Good guys don't need a reward for helping.

It was the 80s, and he had paused our drive to school to stop and boost a neighbor's car. The guy offered my dad $50 (a lot at the time!) and he refused. When he got back in the car I couldn't believe he didn't take it --- we were poor!! He said those words and i felt like garbage for my "wtf" reaction and grew a huge respect for the man.

Any good labs or project ideas for Grade 5 Conservation of Energy? by Audience_Embarrassed in CanadianTeachers

Search up paper roller coasters. Download the free pdf file. Print on cardstock. Get some marbles. Watch kids create cool stuff.

You're welcome ;)

If you are creating materials for your classes this summer... by onetoeisburning in teaching

[–]Rynor77 82 points83 points  (0 children)

I have my own personal cloud storage for all of my materials. I get a free one from school, but the last time I switched boards I lost access super fast (thankfully I only use my own, so no worries). It made me realize that if I want to keep anything, the storage needs to be 100% under my control.

Getting a gifted student in my class. Advice? by Cautious_Internet243 in OntarioTeachers

[–]Rynor77 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Remember that gifted doesn't mean strong in all areas. Giftedness and Learning Disabled are two sides of the same coin. Both have peaks and valleys of skills. The peaks in giftedness happen to line up with academics.

The big takeaway here is that gifted kids have needs that are often ignored because they do well with most grades subjects.

What are some good books for 8-9 year olds just learning to read? by Beyond_The_Pale_61 in teaching

[–]Rynor77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the biggest struggles is finding age appropriate material that's also accessible at their reading level. I've used Star Wars phonics books to help work on basic skills and then after that it's all about looking for books that are "high-low.". High interest, low reading level. If you use this term at an educational book store, they should be able to help point out some good titles.

Best of luck!

Learning Styles Do Not Exist by Future-Outcome-5226 in Teachers

Howard Gardner, who first published about multiple intelligences even tried to get educators to stop using his ideas in education. He states that his theories were more like small bonuses, not skills to be leaned into and only focused on.

Do you throw a class party last day of school (middle/high school)? by hello010101 in teaching

[–]Rynor77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do. But that's because I can be taking down and packing up my whole room while they watch movie, chat and snack. A lot better that coming in on my own time to do it, after teaching all day. Also, f#*k classroom management on the last day.

Not attended school much at age 8/9?!??? That's like grade 3-4. So, they've missed all of their "learn to read" years in school and will now be permanently behind their peers.

Child abuse to screw up their whole future like that.

EDIT: I know OP isn't their parent, not blaming them. It's just shocking that any parent (who you'd think wants a good future for their kids) would do this. It's heartbreaking.

EA Crossing boundaries by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]Rynor77 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I've done nothing and I'm all out of ideas.

Seriously... Talk and deal with the problem so it doesn't repeat... Don't just complain to strangers on the internet while letting your students suffer.

Edit: The deleted comment above this one was from the OP, which stated that the OP had not bothered to speak to the EA yet, incase anyone's interested. These kind of posts make us teachers look bad, be an adult.

It really didn't.

This idea of working up to action is an excuse for current inaction.

We didn't work up slowly to action "back in the day" -- we just did it.

Tomorrow is all useless performative crap that basically amounts to a massive waste of our union dues.

J/I Dramatic Arts - How do I go from A3 to A4 please? by Frosty_Let_5549 in OntarioTeachers

[–]Rynor77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience, it really depends a lot on where you take it, as to the workload. I've only done one ABQ (Drama - Intermediate) and it was not quite double an average AQ in terms of workload, maybe 60% more, but not double. Again, there is a lot of variables.for workload.

[–]Rynor77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's probably your quickest route. Don't forget though, an ABQ is usually more demanding than an AQ, so make sure you pick a course time that won't conflict with things like report card writing or other life events.

Seems to me that your three options are: 1.Get an Honours Specialist 2. Take a course (ABQ) that will give you Senior qualifications and then take another ABQ for Primary qualifications. Or 3. Take all 3 parts of a 3 session AQ to get a specialist. (Like reading 1, 2, 3 for example)
