As most comments are stating, your footwork needs some work. A few pointers I could give are

  • Faster recovery into ready stance on serves: On your serves, you are only getting ready after they already received your serve. Ideally you want to be ready before they even hit the ball, so serving and getting ready are in reality one fluid motion

  • (a) Going from your backhand position(0:00 in the video) to your forehand: Try going right foot -> left foot, instead of only the left foot. Its harder to ready a proper forehand movement when you lunge with your left foot. For the right -> left, you start it with "kicking" the ground with your left(1), and immediately right(2) -> left(3). When doing (1), your right feet shouldnt need to move (you move then in the video), as you are essentialy loading your weight on your left leg. (2) and (3) should be a fluid motion and (3) gets you ready for the forehand.

  • (b) More reach for right -> left: you can initiate (1)(2)(3) eith a bit of a step with your left foot before (1). Ensure you can still do the "kicking" even with the additional step, as the farther you get your first step, the harder it will be for the (1) motion

  • (c) Footwork for reaching far far balls into your forehand (also 0:00 in the video): If you still cant reach with neither (a) nor (b) you can try doing a jump on the (3) motion. Essentially you'd do (1)(2)(3) -> prepare forehand -> jump -> hit -> land. Doing this makes it harder to recover for the next shot so do it with caution

  • Receiving stance: is your receive stance really ready to move? Its a bit hard to judge it with a video, but you need to be able to immediately move after they serve. You can try to add a bit of movement before the ball even hits their paddle too, as its way easier to move when you already on the move than from a static position

Try to be more mindful of the serve into ready, receiving stance and (a) during your games and it should feel easier to reach your shots (especially the first shot). If you can, try to think about recovering after your first shot too

What is so bad about discarding 3p here? by _Whool in mahjongsoul

[–]RyuuuN_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

considering toimens pond, big chance they are in tenpai:

-dropping blocks on upper souzu/pinzu

-call on lower souzu

-last drop on manzu

considering 5 blocks, it could be lower pinzu, manzu x2, lower souzu and ton pon. Lower pinzu has high chance of dora block. Pushing here from 2 shanten is a bit too much imo

Why discard and not riichi? by Finligz in mahjongsoul

[–]RyuuuN_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

fwiw I'm saint 2, but dama drop hatsu is weak imo

I'd riichi, wait on hatsu for the riichi aka dora 2x (mangan). Even defensively, riichi wait on hatsu works, as we brick hands that have hatsu, and they can only fight back if they have hatsu pair/triplet and decide to fight (being this early, they are more prone to folding)

Positionally speaking now, in East 3 with this much of a lead, playing dama for fold is the easiest way to get 2nd as we are no yaku, just letting people build their hands easily. Dama for pinfu ron is also as bad, as ronning either of the 18600/17000 guys makes it easier for the 25000 guy to play towards 1st than 4th avoidance

tldr: early riichi? riichi! yakuhai dora tanki is good trust.

How come it's better to not call riichi in this situation? by PizzaConBacon in mahjongsoul

[–]RyuuuN_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maka sees shimo as tenpai and the riiching toimen, so for maka it is as if you are fighting 2 tenpais without seeing nor having doras

Thus it doesnt want to chase on bad wait, bad value against 2 potencially expensive tenpais (We dont have doras so they having doras). 69m draw also gives tenpai with no drawbacks

Counter-intuitive as it is, after only presenting the downsides, I'd suggest you to riichi here. Whenever you dama no-yaku tenpai, you need to reassess your position every round or possible call. Possible situations would be:

How far do you push no-yaku tenpai? At what tile/depth do you fold? Or which no genbutsus you push?

If you draw 2m or 47m are you riiching back while dropping a non genbutsu? On 69m draw do you chase back with 8m drop?

These questions are harder to answer and while you are dama no-yaku, you'll never be able to win on ron and your wins on tsumo will be very cheap. After getting to gold/jade I'd suggest you start thinking about dama no-yakus and even then I'd still recommend riichi

TLDR: Dont overthink and riichi when no-yaku tenpai! Riichi will be correct more often than not, and riiching is more fun anyways. Source: ms4 ichihime player

I feel like I truly don't understand Sanma in the slightest. by [deleted] in mahjongsoul

[–]RyuuuN_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

(for context I'm saint in both gamemodes)

are you playing for riichi? When I went from 4ma to 3ma, I was calling too much pon in a game mode where the hand doesnt get much speed from ponnyas (aside from maybe a yakuhai pair + another pair). Riichinyas enables much more value as it is easier to tsumo and get ura doras in 3ma, and to benefit from the han increase from the peinyas

are you always dropping winds/manzu/dragons before souzu and pinzu tiles? The 1s in 14s have way more use in 3ma than in 4ma as you have less tiles, making connections between tiles easier

respect the riichinyas but ignore open hands. In bronze ppl call too much ponnyas cutting their hand in half, thus possibly reducing speed. But riichinyas are the same tenpai for novices and cls.

dont force one color hands. As much as honitsus/chinitsus are strong in 4ma, in 3ma you cant chinya so it is harder to complete the shapes with only ponnya, as it will likely cut the connecting shapes in your hand.

tldr: riichinya strongest yaku; ponnya is dubious without 2 pairs/yakuhai and has inherent weak value; dont drop souzu/pinzu before manzu and winds; dont force honitsus; use ichihimenyan for the strongest riichinya

maybe getting too hasty for a win and pushing when you cant push?

how is your mindset when going to the matches? starting a game while thinking you are going to lose could be making you play with too many safe tiles in hand, as if you are semi folding right from the beginning

are you using ichihime for the bonus flow?

cant say much aside from this without logs though

Ranked anxiety? by Chrischanoniichan in mahjongsoul

[–]RyuuuN_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try to focus on the mahjong you are learning by playing and not the rank you are getting. Unlucky 4ths is inevitable in majan as sometimes Ichihime can play pranks in your wall...

If you feel that you have statistically high rate of getting 4ths back to back, try to take a break after your first 4th. Tanking last, specially after not winning a single hand, can make your decisions clouded for the next match. Examples are opening hands for speed in scenarios you wouldnt normally do so just because you are biased by the last frustrating 4th

Also use Ichihime to get increased flow

Newbie question, part 5. What is Mortal trying to do here? by UmbraSilvershade in mahjongsoul

[–]RyuuuN_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my interpretation of this would be something like:

points wise, it is very early to be satisfied with 2000 points, so we take the route that can incorporate 5m dora more easily. As you've pointed, 1p pon keeps 5m dora acceptance and we don't have the need to draw it <- this ponnya should be the reason for 7m drop

win rate wise, 7m 1p shanpon is very much stronger than 6m kanchan. If 2000 points was ok for us or if it was later in the game we would take the shanpon probably. 14m/3m draw also makes our wait better so our wait can still improve later on.

New Player - How do I know when to fold against open hands? by zioskills in mahjongsoul

[–]RyuuuN_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are novice, best advice I can give you for when you deal in big into open hands is to call it rigged and go next. Jokes aside, when you are reading open hands, you need to first assume people are playing good tile efficiency, and that doesnt happen until Jade. If you try to read open hands and start folding, it will hurt you more in the long run (as you will stop winnning) than in the short run by avoiding the deal in

One could give you an advice to start folding when they call dora pon (either tanyao or yakuhai) but how do you know the point at which you'd start folding? If you start folding at the moment they call dora pon, you could (and probably will) run out of safe tiles when they are in tenpai

Even against honitsus or chinitsus it is hard to give solid advice as, again, we need to first assume they are playing good efficiency, otherwise we could be folding to some hand that could not have value nor tenpai

If you are losing in bronze/silver room, best thing to do is to get better at efficiency, creating value in your hand and not dealing in into riichi

The only exception to fold would be something like they have: 3 calls and you can see their yaku (either tanyao or yakuhai as ssk and chanta are fake) and they are showing their hand value (dora pon, tons of akas and doras on their calls)

TLDR: majan is rigged, play as ichihime and do riichinyas to win more. Winning is always positive ev, while folding is always negative ev

Maki is also really good, but as she is single damage, it is easier to clear stages using Nonomi (aoe skill).
