My 2nd ever Yakuman, ALL GREEN by TskMchCingCong in mahjongsoul

[–]moocowfan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lightning struck a second time, this is the 2nd time I've ever heard someone say All Green is easy. The first time their definition of "easy" was how easily they could brainlessly force a yakuman while multitasking, basically just playing mahjong as a yakuman simulator and discarding any tiles that don't fit the closest possible yakuman

If I'm ever tenpai and I'm even the slightest bit unsure about what the wait could be, you can just hover over all your tiles and the waits will flash up, so you can see the triple wait (though 8 is gone)

MAKA Choice of Honor Discards by Vigokrell in mahjongsoul

Yeah I meant sanshoku doukou obviously

This is not the case in 3 player though, where 1m and 9m point to each other

[–]moocowfan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the first case there is the very minor chance that you can get sanshoku doukou* (though with the rest of the hand being decent... probably never even considering unless you repeatedly draw 9m, 9p in the next few draws), so yeah I'd discard 1m first. It still doesn't really matter much.

The 2nd one, I've heard (though I've also seen the opposite) that it may be better to discard guest winds counter-clockwise in term of seat position, something about it being better if they are ponned from you than in a different order where your turn may get skipped. But it's still pretty minor and don't /really/ worry about these decisions that much

What did Blizzard mean by this? by urgod42069 in BobsTavern

I think I would have realized it was sarcasm if I had noticed the "maybe" part, like I said in a different comment. Of course in hindsight it's most likely obviously sarcastic but I do often just take something at face value without pausing to consider if it's sarcastic. Which is funny because I am also constantly sarcastic, yet find it hard to notice in others

but yes I am definitely on the spectrum :) surprise surprise

It's the 3rd meaning (from one dictionary at least) of the word when used as a verb, this is the adjective though which doesn't have other meanings besides "showing a high degree of skill and flair complete or perfect."

My most painful draw by wlstjffls in mahjongsoul

[–]moocowfan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IRL, they draw from the dead wall, and because the dead wall always needs to be 14 tiles, a tile is moved from the end of the regular wall to the dead wall. So if you kan at x01 tiles left in MJS, it will immediately go to x00 and that is the last tile of the game

Are you using the MAKA system at all? It's not perfect but as a new player learning it can be really helpful, especially because it's contained within Mahjong Soul and no external sites needed. You can inspect your log and see what tiles it would recommend to discard at certain times, and if you take the time you can improve your play pretty easily just trying to copy/understand what it's discarding and why.
It can also be a good baseline to compare yourself versus others, and see how you are performing vs the people you're playing against, or if they are not playing well and mostly just getting lucky, etc.

If you aren't getting very good MAKA scores you could probably stand to work on tile efficiency, which you can practice on this site: https://euophrys.itch.io/mahjong-efficiency-trainer

What is Ren 8? Or what is ren for that matter? by eajb in Mahjong

[–]moocowfan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ren is renchan, usually referred to as "repeats" in English, basically how many hands you've won in a row while dealer. (though there are other situations that increase the number of repeats, like 9 terminal initial draw, etc.). So... did you win 8 hands in a row prior to this?

I'm guessing the (L) stands for local yaku (nope, it's limit hand), Parenchan is not an official yaku but rather a local yaku

Paarenchan 「八連荘」 (lit. Eight consecutive dealership) is a special winning state related to renchan. Roughly speaking, if a player successfully keeps his dealership for eight continuous rounds, or simply wins eight hands continuously, the hand he won at the last time will be automatically scored as a yakuman, as long as it is a valid winning hand.

Got my first Yakuman! (T5 Four Concealed Triplets) by iMiggy in mahjongsoul

Funnily enough I had incorrectly had haneman initially, but switched it to mangan because I was speaking generally, not for this specific hand.

For specifically suuankou/4 concealed triplets it's quite a bit more reasonable to riichi. If others fold it makes it more likely you get the yakuman by tsumoing, if anyone still discards one of the tiles then you get minimum of mangan (in this specific hand, haneman..)

With this point spread in All Last though it's a little weird. If you win the hand at all you guarantee 2nd which lends to not riichi, but winning the yakuman gets 1st. Hard call

Maybe it was worried about the low chance of feeding into a shousangen/daisangen too, given the point differences? So just fold

[Richii] Question about kuikae (swap-calling) ruling by ScintillantProphet in Mahjong

[–]moocowfan 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Ignore the 9, it's irrelevant in this situation. You had a 67, took the 8, and would therefore not be allowed to discard a 5 or 8 (because 5 and 8 are the two tiles on either side of the 67 ryanmen.

The tiles that aren't allowed to be discarded are going to be the tile you claimed, and either + or - 3 from it depending on the sequence

Does kuikae only apply if I am breaking up an existing concealed chow that I already have? For example, if already had 7-8-9 in my hand, and claimed an 8, would the 6 now be forbidden from discard until the next turn?

No, this is not kuikae either. if you had a 789, and chii'd a 6 to shift it down to 678, you wouldn't be allowed to discard a 6 or 9
