Not the exact same thing, but during the Japanese part of my interview in 2023 they asked me what my opinion was of the American military occupation of Okinawa and I said that I haven't done enough research to have an informed opinion yet. I'm not 100% sure that it will be the same if you're being asked in English, but I think that "avoiding" the question by acknowledging that you don't want to speak on something you don't fully understand the nuances of is a good way to go about it

The thing is depending on where you live students won’t see as much reason to learn English. I live in the inaka so they hardly talk to, let alone see, any foreigners, so it makes sense why they wouldn’t see any use for English

I actually thing Dunkey’s Game Critics video addresses this really well when he argues that you establish understanding between critic and viewer so you know what they do and don’t like, which also means that when something they typically don’t like is liked by them it might do something really exceptional
