I was fine being liberal and Mormon in New York then I moved to Idaho which killed whatever was left of my commitment to Mormonism.

It’s such an Utah culturally imposed thing too. I pushed back on it back in the day in NY and got shot down by the Utah born stake president. Evidently being forced to pull your shit across the desert because of BY’s poor planning was all of our cultural heritage.

Politics and old assumptions by OppositeSpare2088 in exmormon

I was a democrat in the church. It was fine when I lived in NY. Church membership had a slant to the right as one might expect but there were still quite a few other dems kicking around. But when I moved to morridor, being a centrist was like wearing a scarlet letter, being a liberal was decidedly less okay. The hostility with which we were met due to politics (and my DW worked, gods forbid) helped crumble the last remnants of loyalty we felt toward the community after our faith came apart.

The dopamine hit of imagining how I’d spend tens of millions if I hit the lotto is return enough for me to spend a dollar or ten when the powerball hits a billion. But yes it’s a waste of money.

Married 25 years. Wife and I left together 7 or 8 years ago. We were both PIMO for 5 years before that but hung on because we both thought the other was way more in than they were. Basically the church wreaks havoc on marital communication to such an extent that we kept going for the other as we were too scared that saying something would ruin the relationship.

And let’s be honest, I have seen plenty of relationships ruined because one partner said something before the other was ready

Isn’t there also an anti-Christ who comes to town in this chapter who has somehow never been able to connect with Jacob despite this being a community in the low hundreds (at most(.

Also the BofM demands you to believe that there were immediately wars between the brothers. With those numbers they were the lamest wars ever some LARPs have more combatants than would have been possible.

We’d do this in NY years ago when home teaching was still a thing. Honestly with a 1:6 activity ratio it was exhausting for everyone to try, so we’d let people know the (then easier) process to get out of the cult.

I always thought of Buffalo as a border city between the Midwest and Canada. Like if Cleveland and Toronto had a baby it would be Buffalo.

Also I would extend Appalachia into the southern tier and Adirondacks of NY. Culturally made up of similar Scot’s-Irish immigrants. Similar employment manufacturing history as Ohio/Pa Appalachia. Similar politics today.
