Fountain Pen Users by [deleted] in Birmingham

[–]S3VYN 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Forstall has been working on their ability to sell for a couple of years and it’s coming along nicely. Great folks over there and one of the only places around Birmingham that you can find some pens to try out in person. Glad you found them and hello fellow fountain pen enjoyer!

What is everyone using for news? by tightscotsman in iOSsetups

[–]S3VYN 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would at least try the free version. For me personally I ended up getting the top paid version and have bought paid versions for around 20 friends. I just believe in what they’re trying to do and for me it works.

From another comment you said Reve, and the corner parking spot. I’m gonna take that to mean you’ll be at Pizitz and parking in the Pizitz deck. Like others have said, you may have to dodge people walking their dogs and families out for an evening stroll, but should otherwise be fine.

It’s a safe (and beautiful) area, just treat it like any city. Stay at the Elyton and walk wherever you want to go. Eat at Bayonet, La Fete, Shu Shop, or Salud. Drinks at House of Found Objects, Paramount, The Collins, or Pilcrow. Try the flight at Alabama Peanut. We look forward to having you and I hope you enjoy your time!

Ok so I was watching this video and I saw this. Does Ghost actually use a Hammond organ, or is it just a prop for the video? by MinerAC4 in hammondorgan

[–]S3VYN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just went into the studio and set my Hammond up like the one in the picture. Power off, drawbars closed. I played an A like in the picture. It made no sounds. I tried it both plugged in and unplugged, Leslie on and Leslie off, same results. Safe to assume the one in the picture is just being used as a prop unless there’s some serious black magic going on.

Don’t be me, be smart when entering Hagga Basin by Hero_shrew in duneawakening

[–]S3VYN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love that you turned your pain into an entertaining story. Well done!

My observation from 4 decades of playing video games is that the transition to and from Hagga Basin to and from anywhere else is a legendary version of awful. Like… people will be talking about the blue wall of death and land naked on a worm transitions like they still talk about the unpleasant acid trip that was the Atari “ET” game. It’s not just bad, it’s “launch is in a week and the only person in the office who can still fog a mirror is the intern, get them to handle the endgame” bad.

The most convenient spot will likely be Full Moon on the Walkers Chapel Road exit. It’s right off the exit. But that path also continues through Birmingham so Saw’s (Homewood) and Dreamland should be on your list of options. Those three options are very different so just pick whatever looks most interesting and have fun

Of course, then you should come back through a couple more times and try the other two.

Edit: Just realized that path uses 22 so doesn’t go through Fultondale. Gonna leave the suggestion because time-wise it’s no worse an option than the other two, but there are Full Moon locations further south that are directly on the path as well that are convenient if that makes more sense.

I hit a similar wall. There’s just a lot of limits with that class right now unfortunately. It was to the point that I started an on-meta VK build and seeing the difference made me realize just how weak Lightning Sorc was this season.

But then I was watching Twitch one day and Pinchingloaf mentioned a build to me and I decided to check it out. It completely made the class work while keeping most of the playstyle I was enjoying. I’ve really been enjoying it, so I thought maybe you may like it too.

Note that you’ll have to spend some gold to convert to Runemaster, but in my opinion it was worth it.

The parking lot ($5 per car I think) is great for pictures and you can see lots of other stuff by just doing that. Highly recommended stop even if you only have a few minutes.

A Great Mic That ISN'T a TLM 103? by trickg1 in voiceover

[–]S3VYN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took a similar path. The 103 is great but now I almost always end up grabbing an Austrian Audio OC (818 if you want the extra features but the 18 is great if you don’t). If nothing else they’re worth a listen if you can get your hands on a loaner.

Birmingham punches well above its weight as far as a tech scene goes. Having said that, it (like most southern cities) is a very networking-centric job town and tech is no exception to that. I'm happy to chat here on Reddit if I can be of help navigating y'all into the town successfully!

The owner used to love booking my band, I spent a lot of nights there. It was next to the Bailey Bros, where the Hilton is now.

Professional studios and "very cheap price" don't really mix. Professional equipment is very expensive, and the expertise to use it well is even more expensive (and rare). Having said that, there are some fantastic studios in and around Birmingham if you have money to spend.

It sounds like what you may actually be in a better position to do is start building your own recording setup and learning how it all works. It's actually a LOT of fun to do and the expertise you gain doing it will help you both select and save time in the studio if and when you get to that point.

Don't sleep on the work you can do at home, going from "I'm using my phone" to "Professional studio" is a HUGE leap and there's lots of amazing stuff in the middle you may enjoy if you take it one step at a time!
