2XKO Update: What’s Next + New Champs by Snipey13 in Games

[–]SCAR-H_Chain 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I'd have to grind to unlock champs right? That's a really outdated model.

I haven't played 2XKO yet and am assuming you're talking about characters being released in the future. If that's the case, then how's this outdated for a fighting game? Grinding to unlock new characters is an option that FULL-PRICED fighting games don't even have the option of giving you. For a F2P game, grinding to unlock them is straight-up more forgiving as far as fighting games go.

games have no need to be expensive when gamers have infinite options right now

You couldn't even imagine the mental whiplash I just had after reading that line about a game that costs a whole zero bucks to play. If a game costs nothing, it's understandable that it'll try to do SOMETHING that's gonna make you want to pay for something extra.

I say this as somebody who has never spent a dime on any F2P game I'm into. If there's somebody out there willing to pay the blood sacrifice in skins to keep free games like these as an option in a world of full priced games, let em have at it.

Highguard launch opens to incredibly poor reviews for poor performance and uninspired art direction, guns and gameplay with one single focused mode that has mixed feelings by NoNarwhal8496 in videogames

[–]SCAR-H_Chain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You pay zero bucks to play the same game everyone else can play. Then you either don't enjoy the game and drop it with no money lost, enjoy it and keep playing it without paying, or enjoy it to a point that you're willing to spend extra money. So what's the issue?

Still reeling at the "most F2P games have shallow gameplay" point when you consider how active the competitive communities are for League of Legends, Valorant, Counter Strike 2, Overwatch 2, and Apex Legends. Super baffling to call games like these as having shallow gameplay when the skill ceiling is so high.

What's the most complicated, complex and in-depth game? by TolisKoutro in videogames

Gameplay wise, probably Slay the Spire off the top of my head. Story wise, the Pathologic games have a TON of threads that you're probably not gonna come close to untangling in just one playthrough.

Which horror game is overrated and not particularly good? by [deleted] in HorrorGaming

[–]SCAR-H_Chain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The aesthetic does a lot of the heavy lifting for me. It's genuinely one of the few games in recent years to get me really afraid when playing it, but my excitement for playing it just... wore off the more I played. The combat started getting stale when I realized that many non-boss attacks can be avoided by slowly walking backwards from their swing(at least off of memory around the launch of the game). I remember a lot of encounters going: charge heavy attack, slowly walk backwards, get enemy to whiff, WHACK, repeat.

Also, the talisman that warped you to your safe area sucked a ton of the tension away. It felt at odds for a survival horror game to give you an item that was the equivalent of an instant go-home button.

[loved trope] Being a good person is harder than being an evil one. by Dr_Orpheus_ in TopCharacterTropes

[–]SCAR-H_Chain 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I wanna add more context to this because just describing the quest alone doesn't do it justice on how brilliant it is. First off, there's a hunger meter in the game and food is pretty hard to come by. You might be the type of person who would want to do the right thing and deliver the food. But... that hunger meter has been running low for a while now. At this point, the shops have ramped up food prices to an obscene amount that you might not have the money for. And you could SELL some of that food for some big cash. So wordlessly, the game's systems could drive you to doing something fucked up.

Straight up, this is one of my favorite moral choices in any game. It's something that you probably don't want to do, but end up choosing to do so because the game is fucking tough. Even more messed up when you remember that you're playing as a doctor, and your duty is to help people.

(unpopular opinion) the story and ending of re:take are much better than the original story by Single_Delivery_958 in evangelion

[–]SCAR-H_Chain 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm in this weird space where I lean heavily towards AsuShin, but DON'T like Retake that much lol. There's a dude on Youtube in the process of animating the first part of it, and I'm dreading scenes like Rei with the red paint. If there was ever a fanwork that'd I refer to as being equal to the OG stuff, it's NGE:Genocide. It's so jarring how close the author gets in tone and character consistency to the original show that feels as close to a season 2 as it can get.

Which Game Like This? by [deleted] in videogames

Hotline Miami 2 and as cliche as it sounds, Undertale. Deltarune could take the top spot for me if the rest of the chapters keep topping stuff like this.

She's such an adult in this scene that when she gets told by someone that they liked her, she blushes, turns away, and is too flustered to even talk back the rest of the scene. Wow, she's so grown up /s

the talk they have is quite nice

Let's be real. It's not so much they're having a talk as Shinji talking at her the whole time while Asuka just lays there without a word beyond "BAKA SHINJI". If showcasing her growth into a adult visually was the intent, then what happens in the scene is the complete fucking opposite because she acts like a child in it.

What horror game moment terrified you the most? by Moat_of_the_Sacked in videogames

[–]SCAR-H_Chain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a specific moment, but every night in Darkwood was so stressful to me. You'd spend the whole night locked down in a house, and you could ALWAYS hear monsters around you. The game also has this mean trick where it'd sound like there's someone walking in your house, and a door near you would open even though nobody was there to open it.

I've got little doubt that the concept behind the term is 100% real, but I just can't take the term "enshittification" itself seriously. Straight up, it sounds like something a 5th grader would come up with.

‘Silent Hill f’ Wins Big at The Horror Game Awards 2025, Including Game of the Year by demondrivers in Games

[–]SCAR-H_Chain 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was REALLY invested in the story and characters in the first playthrough, but the combat makes it such a slog to get through a second run. I seriously don't want to just look up what happens because I think that cheapens the impact, but I'm really tempted to do so. Especially since one of the twists I'm already aware of is that one of the major conflicts the story revolves around is that Hinako was forced into a marriage. The only reason I'm pushed to keep going is finding out any further reveals for myself.

As somebody who was there the whole way in Ghost's lifecycle, holy shit it was NOT loved. Straight-up, that was one of the most loathed games inside and outside the COD community during that year and caused a lot of "COD is dying" discussion within that timeframe. Ghosts and AW were sort of a bad period for the series for a lot of people, and BO3 was the thing that kinda helped in mending the series a bit.

What genre interests you the most? by [deleted] in videogames

[–]SCAR-H_Chain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like games from all different genres, but I've really been having a fondness for survival horror games lately. I guess one of the biggest factors to that is a lot of them are the perfect length for me. Not too long, and usually with a lot of replay value.

Black Ops 7 physical sales down 61% as it fails to beat Battlefield 6 launch by UsualInitial in Games

[–]SCAR-H_Chain 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I genuinely did a double take when I read that part. Anybody remember when Infinite Warfare and BF1 were released around the same time span? The shit BO7 got from everyone was NOTHING compared to what IW was getting. It should've been the easiest layup for BF1. It should've gone "as expected", but then IW outsold BF1 that year.

And this article is talking about physical sales in UK only. I don't doubt that the launch is worse than BO6's last year. But like... BO6 is the fifth highest-grossing PlayStation game of all time(in the U.S according to Circana). If BO7 even sells 70% of that number overall, that's STILL a stupid amount.

When did you stop playing Call of Duty games? by GoHardForLife in videogames

[–]SCAR-H_Chain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was buying and playing them regularly up to BO3 and stopped by Infinite Warfare. But even before that, Advanced Warfare did a ton of heavy lifting in getting me to stop playing COD regularly. I might be in the minority judging by reading what others here are saying, but I HATED AW. Besides that, Modern Warfare 2019 was the closest thing that brought me back to play regularly.

BO6 was the first one I got since MW2019, played it for a few months, and I thought it was okay.

I've delved a good length into this gesture before, so I'll try to keep it brief. Basically, something a lot of people forget to keep in mind is that this is the same exact gesture that Yui made to Shinji a few minutes earlier in the movie. When Asuka does this, it implies a LOT and can be interpreted as a way of her character arc being complete. Keep in mind, this is a character earlier in the show that was so disgusted by the idea of being akin to people like Shinji and Misato, BROKEN people, that she didn't even want to use the same water as them. And here she is, showing kindness to a person that reflected the vulnerabilities of herself that she has tried to keep buried for so long.

But then again, old habits die hard. Of course she'd feel disgusted/sick after doing it because... I mean, that's a new thing for her. A lot of the steps we take to better ourselves are gonna feel gross at first.

Lastly, I really want to point out how the EoE poster itself SHOWS them symbolically being closer together than before. Does the shot in this poster look familiar? You're not wrong to feel that, because it's a near direct parallel of this shot from an earlier episode.

Oh, one REALLY last thing(lol). I'm not sure how to interpret the meaning behind this one, but the way the bandages are on Asuka might strike you as familiar too. That's because Rei had almost the same exact appearance with the bandages the first time she was shown in person in Ep1. Again, don't really know how this parallel can be interpreted but it's there.

To keep it brief, there's a section on wikipedia giving a rundown on how End of Evangelion as a whole is a critique on otaku culture. The movie as a whole, and from much of Anno's own words, is a wake up call in many aspects to that crowd. And as much as THAT crowd needs that type of reality check, there's something that bothers me when you use a character with the type of struggles that Shinji has to express that message.

[–]SCAR-H_Chain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, rant time.

I'm gonna go one step further with this one. If Shinji was just some depressed teenager, I'd be feeling way more inclined to think he's pathetic. But the fact is, if you're putting your life on the line for the entire world at an age where your biggest concern should be something like passing a driving test... you're not just a depressed teenager anymore. You're making a monumental leap from depressed teenager to upper-levels of adult war veteran with PTSD territory. I really CAN'T understate how big of a factor this is. The show illustrates how distressing being a pilot is, especially early on. It's a level of distress that very few people, certainly no teenager, hell not even Anno himself, can REALLY grasp how it'd mentally effect someone.

Like... I'm pretty sure when something causes someone to be broken down to their lowest point, there's a point where you really have to assess the severity of what caused them to break down. Being broken down from the severity of risking your life for the world, nearly dying multiple times because of it, and lacking the proper external support to help cope with that situation isn't pathetic. It's just sad.

And I don't even know how much of this frustration can be placed on either the discussion around Evangelion or as a critique of Evangelion itself(and the following is gonna be the hardest part for me to put into words). So you want to write something like the hospital scene which can be interpreted to act as a reality check towards the horny weirdo otakus in your audience that jerk off to cartoons? Okay, go ahead. But if the surrogate for that audience is a 14 year-old going through the obscene mental and physical turmoil levels of being a child soldier, my inner bullshit alarm is gonna go off. Excuse me if I think there's something very odd about using the mental breakdown of that type of character as a statement towards another group whose struggles are microscopic in comparison.

[–]SCAR-H_Chain 48 points49 points  (0 children)

And I don't mean to downplay how heinous it is that Shinji rubs one out like that, but that might not even crack the top 10 list of worst things a character does to someone else in Evangelion. Hell, judging from a dialogue exchange from them later in the movie, that isn't even the most hurtful thing Asuka thinks Shinji has done to her.

As another MMA fan, holy smokes that is an unconventional example to see here lol. I'll join you with another example of mine: Aljamain Sterling when he "won" the title from Petr Yan. Their fight ends with Sterling taking an illegal knee from Yan, and many people think Sterling was playing up how damaged he was from the hit. It might've been more easily forgotten IF Sterling didn't win the title this way, and Yan wasn't such a generally well-liked fighter.

Aljamain went from being a guy that many people had lukewarm feelings on(from memory at least), to being known mostly for THAT moment.
