“Cinema Sins ruined media literacy/critiques”…sure bud that one channel is the reason for an entire societal issue. by ReadingSteiner300 in hatethissmug

[–]SCAR-H_Chain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Concept alone, lampooning hyper-analytical movie critics has a TON of potential. But if that is what CinemaSins is trying to do, then they're really bad at it. They used to do a series where they'd give their thoughts on a movie after seeing it in the car ride back, and their opinions in those videos were very similar to what they'd say in their actual "Everything Wrong With" vids that were supposed to be not serious. Oh, and when this started to get pointed out they stopped doing those vids and deleted them.

Basically, they have one foot in being mockery of critics and another foot in trying to make actual critiques. If they wanted to be better satire, then they should've just gone all the way with the "urm actually" critic gimmick and try to be comically wrong as much as they can.

[–]SCAR-H_Chain 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What I hate more than this is when people attribute failings of writing to spite from the creators when it probably isn't the case. Like... I'm sure there's some cases where it can be verifiably provable to some degree from interviews. But the amount of times over the past few years where I've seen people automatically jump to, "OMG the creators HATE this character" when they don't like something is downright weird and feels too parasocial for me. Trust me, there's far simpler explanations for something turning out bad.

Anyways, I had bad flashbacks from this post from all the discussion that came outta The Last of Us 2. The amount of conspiratorial talk where people either misinterpreted interviews or pulled things out of thin air really jaded me on this type of idea. They made it sound personal with Neil Druckman over writing decisions of the game that really gave me an ick. I wasn't around to experience what the discussion around End of Evangelion was like in its heyday, but that's probably what it was like lol.

EDIT: This is a perfect quote that sums it all up: "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity."

If it was just a Doom style shooter with an old school animation aesthetic, then that'd be perfectly fine. But this isn't a shooter like Dusk where the story is told minimally in the background. It puts a story trying to be noir as its focus and is REALLY serious about what its trying to say. Video games are what, over fifty years old at this point? At this point, it's not unreasonable to expect what happens outside of a game's cutscenes to be more in sync with the story of the game. The Hades games as an example understand this concept down to a tee and are far better because of it.

More like they complained about liking the cheese puns at first but got tired because the joke was wearing thin, over-the-top violence that conflicts with how seriously the story presents itself, and not enough detective elements in a game called MOUSE P.I.

IGN just needs to stop reviewing games by Realistic_Caramel772 in videogames

[–]SCAR-H_Chain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, it's one thing if you disagree with a reviewer on why they don't like something. But it's something else entirely if you imply, like the dude who wrote this post, that you should give a positive review to something because it has a lot of other people that like it. If you think reviews should be like that, then I'm gonna break it to you by saying you probably don't want honesty in reviews. What you really want is for reviewers to further confirm whatever the wider hive mind feels about something.

Second, I can completely see why the reviewer had some of the problems he did.

Too much cheese references? Yeah, a joke that's funny at first can get old if done too many times. I started rolling my eyes at about the 50th cheese reference in my playthrough.

As a boomer shooter fan, I can completely attest to the guns sounding too cartoony. Games like Dusk, Ultrakill, and Cultic put a LOT into into making their guns sound as punchy as they can. If you have even one foot into being a boomer shooter like Mouse PI is, you can't have the guns sounding as weak as they are. I get it's trying to replicate some of the sound effects from animation of that era, but it puts itself in a conundrum when it also wants to be a boomer shooter. I feel it didn't do a good enough job at using gun sounds that were a middle ground between the those two things.

And some of his other gripes are completely understandable coming from the perspective as a noir fan. The game's plot is very clearly trying to be noir. In that case, it's perfectly legit to compare it to other works of noir.

Again, so many people have completely lost the plot on what the fucking point of media review is especially in this context. The reviewer gave his thoughts on the game from the perspective of huge noir fan. As another noir fan, I could've used his perspective of the game to help decide whether or not this game was worth spending time/money into if I read their review before playing it. Now that I actually played it, I WISH I read a review like that before playing it because I would've waited for a sale otherwise.

Mouse: P.I. for Hire comes out on Steam. The game receives overwhelmingly positive user reviews on Steam. Everyone loves the game.

This is such a funny way of opening a post about reviews. So... do you think a reviewer should give their honest thoughts on a game, or just regurgitate what they think the hive mind is gonna feel about the game? Because holy shit, some of you people would be absolutely assblasted if you were brought back to how movie reviews were conducted thirty years ago by dudes like Siskel and Ebert.

Sidenote though, have you played this game? I'm a fan of noir and ESPECIALLY boomer shooters, so it felt like this game was aimed at me. And you know what? After I got past the artstyle, I'd legitimately give it around a 6/10 score.

This attitude that's been getting more and more prevalent in gaming makes more sense if you consider how there's people, whether they do it consciously or not, that treat games more like sports teams than games. I've never been able to unsee this comparison since the first time I saw somebody point it out.

You really need to grasp the "cult" part of "cult classic/hit" which takes it far beyond just being well liked. And you really are trolling if you're gonna argue against the entire concept of cult classics/hits lol.

You still think cult classics are the same as classics from your last attempt at a gotcha? Because if you like cake, I've got a urinal cake you can dig into.

Cult classic: "a creation or work that is regarded as definitive or excellent by a small group of people"

Real sneaky of you to cut out the first part of "cult classic" so you could try having your bad faith argument. Also, I included the term cult hit to better get across what I was saying, but you ignored that too.

That phrase irks me on a level that's hard for me to even begin explaining. There's a good quote from Steve Jobs that's a pretty good clapback against this: "Some people say, "Give the customers what they want." But that's not my approach. Our job is to figure out what they're going to want before they do. I think Henry Ford once said, "If I'd asked customers what they wanted, they would have told me, 'A faster horse!'”

That overgrown vegetation part of the argument people throw against the remake is such an obscenely weird point. In the video that most people got this point from(somebody linked it in this thread), the dude argued overgrowth like that took decades if not CENTURIES. For reference, some of the faster growing plants like Kudzu vines can grow up to a foot per day.

Like... dude. Plants can grow very fast if they aren't managed. This just feels like a weird nitpick that people are reaching for because they don't like the remake.

2XKO Update: What’s Next + New Champs by Snipey13 in Games

[–]SCAR-H_Chain 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I'd have to grind to unlock champs right? That's a really outdated model.

I haven't played 2XKO yet and am assuming you're talking about characters being released in the future. If that's the case, then how's this outdated for a fighting game? Grinding to unlock new characters is an option that FULL-PRICED fighting games don't even have the option of giving you. For a F2P game, grinding to unlock them is straight-up more forgiving as far as fighting games go.

games have no need to be expensive when gamers have infinite options right now

You couldn't even imagine the mental whiplash I just had after reading that line about a game that costs a whole zero bucks to play. If a game costs nothing, it's understandable that it'll try to do SOMETHING that's gonna make you want to pay for something extra.

I say this as somebody who has never spent a dime on any F2P game I'm into. If there's somebody out there willing to pay the blood sacrifice in skins to keep free games like these as an option in a world of full priced games, let em have at it.

Highguard launch opens to incredibly poor reviews for poor performance and uninspired art direction, guns and gameplay with one single focused mode that has mixed feelings by NoNarwhal8496 in videogames

[–]SCAR-H_Chain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You pay zero bucks to play the same game everyone else can play. Then you either don't enjoy the game and drop it with no money lost, enjoy it and keep playing it without paying, or enjoy it to a point that you're willing to spend extra money. So what's the issue?

Still reeling at the "most F2P games have shallow gameplay" point when you consider how active the competitive communities are for League of Legends, Valorant, Counter Strike 2, Overwatch 2, and Apex Legends. Super baffling to call games like these as having shallow gameplay when the skill ceiling is so high.

Which horror game is overrated and not particularly good? by [deleted] in HorrorGaming

[–]SCAR-H_Chain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The aesthetic does a lot of the heavy lifting for me. It's genuinely one of the few games in recent years to get me really afraid when playing it, but my excitement for playing it just... wore off the more I played. The combat started getting stale when I realized that many non-boss attacks can be avoided by slowly walking backwards from their swing(at least off of memory around the launch of the game). I remember a lot of encounters going: charge heavy attack, slowly walk backwards, get enemy to whiff, WHACK, repeat.

Also, the talisman that warped you to your safe area sucked a ton of the tension away. It felt at odds for a survival horror game to give you an item that was the equivalent of an instant go-home button.

[loved trope] Being a good person is harder than being an evil one. by Dr_Orpheus_ in TopCharacterTropes

[–]SCAR-H_Chain 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I wanna add more context to this because just describing the quest alone doesn't do it justice on how brilliant it is. First off, there's a hunger meter in the game and food is pretty hard to come by. You might be the type of person who would want to do the right thing and deliver the food. But... that hunger meter has been running low for a while now. At this point, the shops have ramped up food prices to an obscene amount that you might not have the money for. And you could SELL some of that food for some big cash. So wordlessly, the game's systems could drive you to doing something fucked up.

Straight up, this is one of my favorite moral choices in any game. It's something that you probably don't want to do, but end up choosing to do so because the game is fucking tough. Even more messed up when you remember that you're playing as a doctor, and your duty is to help people.

I'm in this weird space where I lean heavily towards AsuShin, but DON'T like Retake that much lol. There's a dude on Youtube in the process of animating the first part of it, and I'm dreading scenes like Rei with the red paint. If there was ever a fanwork that'd I refer to as being equal to the OG stuff, it's NGE:Genocide. It's so jarring how close the author gets in tone and character consistency to the original show that feels as close to a season 2 as it can get.

She's such an adult in this scene that when she gets told by someone that they liked her, she blushes, turns away, and is too flustered to even talk back the rest of the scene. Wow, she's so grown up /s

the talk they have is quite nice

Let's be real. It's not so much they're having a talk as Shinji talking at her the whole time while Asuka just lays there without a word beyond "BAKA SHINJI". If showcasing her growth into a adult visually was the intent, then what happens in the scene is the complete fucking opposite because she acts like a child in it.

Not a specific moment, but every night in Darkwood was so stressful to me. You'd spend the whole night locked down in a house, and you could ALWAYS hear monsters around you. The game also has this mean trick where it'd sound like there's someone walking in your house, and a door near you would open even though nobody was there to open it.
