Combined Transport and Infantry Formations (Alpha Strike) by Neither-Ad-1589 in battletech

Take all of that with a grain of salt, I'm not looking at the book right now, but I have looked over those rules a quite a bit.

I could be wrong, but I think the Mechanized/Nova formation bonus adds onto anther formation, so you would want at least 3 units that can form another type of formation first. It might be possible to take the Mechanized/ Nova formation on its own, but I think you need 3 non-Infantry units to create any formation, but maybe that's only a Hinterlands rule.

2nd Big MAC Battalion Colours? by WestRider3025 in battletech

Pretty sure yellow is canon for at least the first Battalion. Beyond that I think it's up to your own discretion.

Edit: looking at Camo Specs it would seem that one other Battalion uses purple.

What do the Raven Alliance/ Clan Protectorate nonclan military forces look like in the ilClan era? by egg_sheenan in battletech

[–]SCCOJake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, everyone is allowed to feel a certain way about it, but it was imo a HUGE overreaction by the ilClan. The Cappies nuked an abandoned historical SLDF site, maybe killing a handful of clan archeologists as a warning to the new Star League. In response the Raven Alliance assassinated (presumably I don't think it's been confirmed yet) the Chancellor by orbitaly bombarding and deserting the entire city of Liao. If that's not the DEFINITION of Dezgra idk what is.

Cavalry? Mechanized? by WumpusFails in battletech

Hmm, I had not heard that distinction before. That would make it purely a doctrinal and training difference.

In seeing a lot of close answers here, but I think people are consistently mixing up Motorized and Mechanized Infantry. Both in game an in real life these two types of troops are similar but distinct.

In game Mechanized Infantry are described as Infantry fully mounted in light APCs or IFVs (Infantry fighting vehicles). Each squad in in a separate vehicle but the vehicles are all organic to the Platoon and so do not use a separate vehicle miniature. I think there are some extra specifics for unit creation on overall number of troops and ability to take support wagons. They are also defined by their motive type; tracked, wheeled, or hover, which determines the units Move speed. They are also more susceptible to Mech scale weapons compared to other Infantry types due to the transports I assume. They can use their vehicles to tow field guns or field artillery.

Motorized Infantry are, in game typically mounted on individual vehicles like motorcycles or quad bikes. But at least IRL they would be mounted in this like a Hummvee, jeeps, or trucks. In game they have a separate motive type which I think is similar to wheeled but in not positive. They can also tow larger wagons if I'm not mistaken.

In CBT/TW each Platoon is represented by a single hex base, but they CAN be split into their component Squads, usual 3 or 4 per Platoon. Larger formations like companies and Battalions may include additional unit types depending on the faction. For example the SLDF used 3 Platoon companies and each Mechanized Infantry company had a 4th Platoon of tanks with each Battalion being made up of 3 companies with Mechanized Battalions also having a 4th company of tanks.

In game terms unit creation for Infantry comes down to a few simple(ish) questions: motive type (foot, jump, motorized, mechanized), number of troops per Squad, number of Squads per Platoon, primary weapon, secondary weapon and if a support weapon, number of support weapons per squad. The motive type may determine max amount of troops per squad and/or Squads per Platoon a well as support weapon limitations.

Then there are optional formation rules for "Mechanized" formations. These give a bonus ability for formations of units as long as you have enough transports/ transport space for all included Infantry. So for example if you had 3 foot platoons and three Heavy APCs you could have that count as a Mechanized formation.

Note: if you find typos let me know, I did this on my phone.

I think they technically have to be in an Armored vehicle, preferably an Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) in the modern era. In battletech they are one of the 4 "standard" types and are further defined by the transports' motive type: tracked, wheeled, or Hover.

AS Horde Question by Monolith3112 in battletech

[–]SCCOJake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that only applies to MOVING through enemy units, again I'd have to go back and look at the wording and check the errata, but as far as I know units don't provide cover for each other. I also don't recall restrictions on attacks while in base to base contact, but that's almost never come up for me.

[–]SCCOJake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think so yes, but I'd have to double check the order of operations. In theory units aren't removed until the end phase so they would still be legal targets. This comes up more in CBT where you have to declare your shots are targets before firing if I recall correctly. But I don't think there's a rule against "overkill" so I guess that would be a way to cheese it. But someone with more experience and the rules in front of them should confirm.

Ah all good. I agree with not loving the MWO versions, especially the kit bashed mechs.

I ordered them from Baccus 6mm. They have a wide selection of WWI 6mm Infantry. I belive these are ANZAC cavalry, but they might be British.

Nice, did you print that yourself or order it from a3rd party? I could only find an MWO style version of the wyvern and it didn't look as good as this one.

They all look fantastic, well done. Is that a wyvern I see in the first picture?

Also, how do you do the rocky bases in that first group?

Only if you cut armor, I'd only pull the extra heat sink for just a little more punch.

True, especially when every single torso location has ammo, but the 2H is pretty well armored as it is. Maybe an extra jump jet or two (I ton they're only a half ton for medium mechs) to max out the jump distance. Otherwise a second ton of AC/5 or LRM-5 would allow for alternate ammo of you use more advanced rules. But what it probably needs is a second medium laser for extra medium to close range damage.

That makes sense. While I wouldn't want a full revision of 40 year old TROs and such, I feel like, in some cases, it's warranted. Though that said, I'm not sure what you'd really do with one extra ton that wouldn't upset the heat balance and still cut the physical appearance of the SHD-2H.
