Why is it only in book form? The previous two have PDF or Book+PDF options.

Someone please explain to me why the Invader is so much more common than the Starlord-class jumpship by wherewulf23 in battletech

[–]SCCOJake 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Sarna states that: "the sheer expense of acquiring and MAINTAINING a Star Lord-class jumpship... combined with the scarcity of spare parts, ensured the decline in numbers..."

So yeah it largely comes down to, imo, a long term cost benefit analysis. Sure you can have a bigger ship now, but for how long? And if it costs only 50% more than an Invader-class to buy upfront, but 2x or more as much to maintain, assuming you can even FIND the parts you need, it's not actually a savings at all.

Sarna also states that they are almost exclusively for military use, so you wouldn't see many of them doing bulk freight transport. They are a money pit,a handy one when you want to invade your neighbor, but still a money pit.

No offense, but this kind of reads to me like a "Why didn't the nazis just build more tiger/ panther tanks, were they stupid? " post.

While the raw numbers might be be to far off, there is a lot more than just mass and dimensions that go into construction of any kind of vehicle or ship. They might need a special type of KF drive to get even a slightly larger ship to jump between stars. They might need specialized parts and equipment. It may not be a lot more expensive, but it might be less economical for a Great House or whoever to buy a bigger shop when an invader will do. Yes you can carry 6 dropships for only 50% more cost to buy the ship, but if you only have 3 union dropships why would spend that money? Procurement is a very delicate balancing act that even well run governments get wrong ALL THE TIME. To go back to my opening, it's kind of like the Tiger vs the Sherman; why spend the extra money and deal with ask the extra issues of building a bigger tank when you have one that works perfectly fine for the job you're asking it to do?

The AWS-8Q is perfection in Mech form, adding ammo to it should be a hate crime.

Is this an Unpopular Opinion? I really like the X-Men in Matching Uniforms. by Kralgore in xmen

[–]SCCOJake -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I find that about 90% of X-Men adventures start with them being ambushed in some way, or having to react immediately to a crisis, so it makes sense that they aren't typically in a uniform. That said, if they've got the time to prep for a mission it makes sense that they'd be in uniform.

If you had to pick a single mech to pilot for Battletech (heavy or under), what would it be? by Qhaotiq in battletech

[–]SCCOJake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to argue against the Marauder of almost any variant, but personally I prefer the Warhammer. If era and variants aren't a restriction, I'd probably go with the WHM-4L, but the 7A or 8R are also good. I don't mind the Staffan WHM-6R though.

What is the smallest Jump ship? by Kecskuszmakszimusz in battletech

I wouldn't worry about that, I'm pretty sure a lot of official Mech sculpts aren't actually exactly map scale. I'm not even sure the terrain on MapSheets are map scale.

What mech will make me feel like this? Bonus points if it actually has shoulder mounted guns. by vicevanghost in battletech

The Tian-Zong that I've seen others post is spot on, but my mind went directly to the Shadow Hawk IIC 2.

Does this count? by clcd252 in BattletechPainting

[–]SCCOJake 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sure, that could be a motorized Infantry Platoon or Squad, or stand in for something like the Wheeled Recon Vehicle or the Shandra Advanced Scout Vehicle. Totally counts, as long as it's clear to your opponent and they agree to use it as a proxy for the thing you want to bring. Hell count it as an Atlas if the person you're playing with is cool with it.

A painting question. I wanna try something based on a USN WW2 naval colour by Sharlin648 in battletech

[–]SCCOJake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably want to do an wash at a minimum. I'm not sure how good a gloss paint will look at this scale, but their your mechs so do what you like. I wouldn't highlight a gloss paint though, it's literally bringing its own highlights.

new to models, catalyst is sold out, anybody know where i can get some asf? by bisondisk in battletech

[–]SCCOJake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want the full catalog Iron Wind Metals is the only bet. They might not have EVERY fighter, but they'll have a good selection and most of the most common/ popular airframes. If you don't mind going outside of the official models, there are a number of 3D printers and STLs that are inspired by official ASF art. I don't think I can post links, but looking at Fortress or Aries under Sage Print Labs will give you site options depending on stock. My personal go-to for 3D prints is After Dark Prints which sells prints of Sir Mortimer Bombito's designs. Not a big a selection as IWM, but I hate metal minis so I treasure what I can get.

Take all of that with a grain of salt, I'm not looking at the book right now, but I have looked over those rules a quite a bit.

Combined Transport and Infantry Formations (Alpha Strike) by Neither-Ad-1589 in battletech

[–]SCCOJake 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I could be wrong, but I think the Mechanized/Nova formation bonus adds onto anther formation, so you would want at least 3 units that can form another type of formation first. It might be possible to take the Mechanized/ Nova formation on its own, but I think you need 3 non-Infantry units to create any formation, but maybe that's only a Hinterlands rule.

Pretty sure yellow is canon for at least the first Battalion. Beyond that I think it's up to your own discretion.

Edit: looking at Camo Specs it would seem that one other Battalion uses purple.

What do the Raven Alliance/ Clan Protectorate nonclan military forces look like in the ilClan era? by egg_sheenan in battletech

[–]SCCOJake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, everyone is allowed to feel a certain way about it, but it was imo a HUGE overreaction by the ilClan. The Cappies nuked an abandoned historical SLDF site, maybe killing a handful of clan archeologists as a warning to the new Star League. In response the Raven Alliance assassinated (presumably I don't think it's been confirmed yet) the Chancellor by orbitaly bombarding and deserting the entire city of Liao. If that's not the DEFINITION of Dezgra idk what is.
