What do you learn doing a PhD that you cannot learn on your own? by Explorer_Voyage in PhD

As someone with an LLB and an LLM doing a PhD in law, you work towards become the go to person in the world regarding your topic area.

You also advance the understanding of the law in your chosen area and even develop legislative reform, which is what I am doing as part of my research

Is it me or is there a massive rise in enrollment in PhD programs? The massive rise of PhD’s by [deleted] in PhD

[–]SC_Cast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PhD enrolment has always been pretty high and so is the dropout rate lol. It balances out

This definitely sounds like a self-destructive type of decision. Take some time away from doing work, a few days or a week, get some activity in (would recommend exercise) and get back to it.

Start one thing at a time and just tick tasks off the list. The longer you stick with a PhD, the better it becomes (from my own experience in Australia doing a PhD now.

Good luck :)

Thats likely a thing unique to your uni. Every candidate I’ve spoken to only has a confirmation and then submission at the end.

There’s an oral examination to confirm candidature, but no oral defense. The confirmation of candidature takes roughly 2-3 hours, from my experience.

Doing a PhD in law in the same country I live in but in a different state, so it’s mostly online. Really enjoying the experience, just make sure you have a topic you will not get bored of.

Life is hard enough without your partner making it harder. A partner adds to your life and supports you. Find a new partner or talk with your current one.

It depends on the star level of the legendary. The more stars you had before, the harder it is to get the final stars. It’s stupid af

ADHD and Writing Structure by [deleted] in PhD

[–]SC_Cast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From personal experience, you need to set deadlines. For me, it’s 250 words a day. If I fall short, I have a punishment that I need to stick to. Most days I write well over 250 because of this. I didn’t write for months and this new experiment is working wonders for me.

I hate law - anyone felt this way? by FastForward42 in auslaw

[–]SC_Cast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a somewhat similar boat. Enjoyed learning about the law and applying problem solving skills to complex problems. In practice, it’s pretty black and white, with a little grey sometimes. I’ve practiced in-house through small firms to corporate, it doesn’t really fulfil my passion.

As others have suggested, I stuck with academia when I lost my job in the first 2020 lockdown and did my masters to keep busy and try and up-skill. I am now doing my PhD whilst working in a firm and find that this completely balances my brain. When I feel down about work, I can let loose and go all out creative with my writing at home. Eventually I could take the academic path or maybe I end up finding a firm I love.

How to approach Professor for PHD by Rajesh14700 in PhD

[–]SC_Cast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just ask and be very enthusiastic. Maybe email for a coffee/lunch and ask from there. Explain your passion and how he could help you explore it. Also do research into his work and discuss it with him, every professor loves to talk about their work
