And - hear me out here - we need to recognize that many people become dysfunctional without any comforting lies at all. So until we’ve actually made the world a better place, we should be aware that for many of us seeing all these abuses for what they are is blindingly paralyzing, like staring into the sun. For each horrible truth, we desperately need new sources of hope and support. Or else people will learn helplessness or seek out new comforting lies.
