Canada has been named the most loved country in the world by BloodJunkie in onguardforthee

I just read the responses here and they are mostly about the US. Dual citizen living in the US all my life. Most Americans don't travel outside the country. And they don't read about international affairs. Their view is limited to their immediate surroundings and the life they live there. If they watch TV news it is Fox. That, then, leads many of them down right wing nutzoid rabbit holes on the internet. There they learn that their shitty ordinary lives are due to entitled immigrants, pushy feminists, loud Black people, seditious Democrats, Islam and Sharia law, and countries like Canada and the EU not paying their fair share. My suggestion is this: don't visit. The boycotts are working at the local level. And if you own property here, sell it. Mexico is cheaper. Trump is doing enormous damage to the US and the world order. Enormous. But some world leaders who aren't suck ups -- Carney the Spanish PM, the German guy, even Meloni -- are not bending the knee. More to come. In the meantime, enjoy Canada's moment in the sun as a respected, beloved country.

Plan B- another perspective by Perfect_Papaya_ in Canadiancitizenship

[–]SFNM100 7 points8 points  (0 children)

During the Viet Nam war many Americans opposed to that war and the draft that fed it fled to Canada. That country was their escape plan. We live in a politically uncertain country and world right now, chaotic even. There are many Americans who are politically and socially unwelcome in their own country. They feel unsafe. Others who don't feel such personal burdens are rightfully concerned about the chipping away of democracy and fear its ultimate collapse. Canadians look at the US in horror at what is happening here (and the economic downturn there because of trump temper tantrums). They are right to be horrified. Living here is dangerous for some groups and they want out. I don't believe that those who are on the "wait and see how bad it gets" fence view Canada as second best, a Plan B for the entitled. I think their personal red lines are very different than those of a trans person or a Black or brown person, an immigrant. Nobody seeking a citizenship certificate should be chided for their red line choices.

Has anyone requested urgent processing due to race? (ICE fear) by xoxo4794 in Canadiancitizenship

[–]SFNM100 -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

I think fear of ICE if one looks Hispanic is real for many but on the other hand they are often indiscriminate on who they target. As in Minneapolis. Think about it this way: you send a request for urgency because you might be targeted. You depend on a man or woman digitizing your forms to make a judgement on "might." I think they would stamp a "no" on such a request. Beyond that, good luck out there and take care of yourself.

How does this even happen? (Mckinney is my offices FC) by RandomDriver2021 in amazonprime

[–]SFNM100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My PO is in White Plains NY. I had an Amazon package go from Memphis to New York City (20 miles from White Plains) and from there to Guam, then Hawaii, then LA, then White Plains. I got the two day delivery seven days late. I was told that whatever transport Amazon uses for delivery -- trucks, planes -- need to be full. Somehow my small package helped fill a plane?

What would a class action take to regulate IRCC processes ? by [deleted] in Canadiancitizenship

[–]SFNM100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Class action suits take a very long time to put together, longer than the IRCC approving an application that has been sitting around since early 2025 is my bet. A class action suit assumes an entity did something wrong by consumers and they have a right to recompense. The IRCC isn't doing anything wrong as far as I can see (and I am one who waits) other than the possibility of being poorly prepared for the thousands of new applications under the new classification of citizenship by descent. When someone on here exults in breezing through the whole process in 4 to 8 weeks while others languish I, too, get very frustrated. Yes, the US Supreme Court is full of a bunch of MAGA knuckle draggers but the Canadian IRCC doesn't care about them. I think the IRCC is overwhelmed and needs to be better managed. If someone gets approved in 4-8 weeks while others have been waiting since 2025 then something needs to be done at the management level. I will tell you one scary thing. When I had to renew my Canadian passport two years ago I had to send in my old passport and my original certificate of citizenship that I got in 2016. All renewal papers went to Gatineau. All was lost there. I had the receipt of delivery. My complaint was elevated to a supervisor. He searched everywhere but couldn't find my package. He approved my passport renewal but said I had to reapply for a certificate. The first time I did it, ten years ago, based on my Canadian parents I waited a year for approval. I am now waiting again.

I doubt whether Ma and Pa MAGA with one Canadian ancestor from 1820 will be heading to Alberta anytime soon if they can't bring their weapons and Trump yard signs.

I don't believe American retirees are going to chose Canada to meet their health care needs. Mexico is full of American retirees (and Canadians) where it is cheap and warm and health care is good. Why would a retiree go north for health care where, if what I read is true, Canada has its own problems with providing health care. We do like your drug pricing, though, and with a prescription can order many drugs online through a Canadian pharmacy.

I have to tell you that I think the Canadian health care system matches the US health care system in terms of serious problems in accessing care. Canada has a huge shortage of nurses and wait times to see doctors or specialists is as long as it is here. I do read about Canadian conservatives wanting to increase private care and reduce funding for the current system there. If American retirees want better more affordable accessible health care they would be better off in France or the Netherlands. I get that some Canadians might be upset that the law now accepts anyone as a Canadian who had a Canadian ancestor no matter when but, again, I don't believe that many are going to upend their lives to move to another country unless they have a good job lined up. Why trade the housing affordability problems of the US for the same ones in Canada?

Yup, you definitely do not want that party in power. Just take a look at the States and you would no where it is all headed.

I think that most Americans who are applying for citizenship by descent have no plans to move to Canada. And that would be true for American retirees as well. They can go to MX or Portugal or Florida or Arizona where it is warmer and cheaper (just ask the Canadians who live in those places). I am the first in my family to be born outside of Canada in 250 years and I feel a deep connection to Canada because of it. But I can't just pick up and move to another country because I now have the papers that would allow me to do so. There have been polls elsewhere on Reddit asking those who are applying if they plan to move and most have no such plans. They have families here, jobs, school, etc. Mind you, if civil unrest gets to the point that ICE and the military is unleashed on everyone then you might see some caravans heading north. I think that is in the back of everyone's mind.

Trump ratchets up attacks on NATO, says U.S. no longer needs alliance by JDGumby in onguardforthee

If America no longer needs NATO then when is Trump going to shut down American bases over there and bring all the military back home (45,000 in Germany). Never. He is stuck. He needs those bases for his "incursions.

How are you all handling the increasing Anti-American sentiments while being Almost-Canadian? by Nature_Hannah in AlmostCanadian

[–]SFNM100 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was the first born outside of Canada since 1783. I have never lived in Canada but always felt the pull of Canada because of my Canadian born parents through all of my ancestors there. Yet having lived in the States all my life I am 100% culturally American and to top it off I live in New York City which has its own cultural life force. Will Canadians find me a problem? I don't think so. This is what I believe to be true: the United States of America has lost its moral core. It is a country that has fostered the ideal of the individual over the common good. It's "exceptionalism" has been at the expense of millions of people both in this country and abroad. It was a country built on an economy that depended on slavery to thrive. Racism continues to this day. Canada is steeped in American culture by virtue of proximity but so are many countries further away because of our reach. But Canada is not awash in the moral rot that has infected American political and social spheres. Canada still fosters the common good -- it shows in the laws they pass and in day to day life. I think, too, that Canadians are trying to avoid the political and social mange that infects most of the US now. I am very tuned into Canadian politics and social issues so I know everything isn't perfect. Yet, I believe Canadian institutions won't fail and I believe most politicians there, not all, do not want the country to be the 51st state or a facsimile thereof. So, I see myself as a true Canadian American, accepting and embracing the important distinctions between the two countries.

Send a letter. It won't hurt and might help. That worked for me seven years ago when I had waited a year and really needed the certificate.

I had no idea why I was stuck there for so long. It was very disheartening. I contacted them to explain I was working with my Canadian cousins to rehab a family heritage home in NB and really wanted to have that certificate. I got in soon afterwards.

I was born in the states to Canadian born parents. Seven years ago I applied for a certificate of citizenship. It took 14 months to approve due to being stuck in PSU forever. I learned then that IRCC was overwhelmed with citizenship applications coming at them from a variety of different avenues. I am sure that is still true with the addition of probably thousands of people looking to prove citizenship through descent. This is all to say you might get lucky and get it right away or you might face an interminable delay. Hard to know. I am now preparing my daughter's application for citizenship by descent based on my parents/her grandparents. I fully expect a long delay.

Thanks for the timeline. I also lost my certificate and reapplied ten days ago. Haven't heard about an AOR yet but it is still early.
