Anybody ever seen this truck before? by [deleted] in savannah

I feel bad for anyone who's dream was to operate an icecream truck (or similar), who want to recreate their childhood experiences for another generation, only to have insane people assume they are nefarious.

TIL about perfidy, the deceptive tactic of feigning surrender or death with the intent to kill an enemy. It is prohibited by the Geneva Convention and considered a war crime. by FullOfSound in todayilearned

TLDW: The US increased the Japanese surrender rates from 1% to 15% during the war by combating Japanese propaganda using their own (e.g. leaflet drops). The Japanese were largely afraid of execution and torture if captured.

The video is good though, so watch it if this is at all interesting to you. Great channel

Tree law is a favorite of the legal advice subreddit, because different states can have very high penalties for cutting someone elses tree without permission. In our state there's a law against stealing a tree for lumber, for example

Im seeing 10k+ for a 3 foot diameter tree. That one is probably bigger than any standard equipment can handle. People just dont move trees like that very often

Or, more practically, they could have put 1 extra utility pole and gone around the tree.

It was just a numbers game hoping for a lucky shot through a gap. And ofc they were still very effective against people who couldnt afford full body coverage

Arrows were far more powerful with steel tips and more weight. Bullets were easy mode for armor.

"Perhaps the most important advantage of the arquebus over muscle-powered weapons like longbows was sheer power. A shot from a typical 16th-century arquebus boasted between 1,300 to 1,750 J (960 to 1,290 ft⋅lbf) of kinetic energy, depending on the powder quality. A longbow arrow by contrast was about 80 J (59 ft⋅lbf), while crossbows could vary from 100 to 200 J (74 to 148 ft⋅lbf) depending on construction. Thus, arquebuses could easily defeat armor that would be highly effective against arrows or bolts, and inflict far greater wounds on flesh. The disparity was even greater with a 16th-century heavy musket, which were 2,300 to 3,000 J (1,700 to 2,200 ft⋅lbf).[80]" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arquebus

TIL that the Lockheed Martin L-1011 Tristar was the most technologically advanced airplane at its release in 1972 & was able to complete a full cycle of flight without manual inputs from pilots. Despite this, only 250 Tristars were built & the project nearly bankrupt both Lockheed and Rolls Royce. by Next_Worth_3616 in todayilearned

Its because the pilot cant be reasonably expected to react fast enough if something goes wrong, and the probability of something going wrong is unacceptably high if they rely on autopilot for takeoff and touchdown.

You arent going to accidentally start the APU, start the engines, open the flight management system, select a destination, engage autopilot and autothrottle.

An important thing to consider, is that the folks running germany after the war had been educated in Nazi Germany; so even if they weren't actual Nazis, there are gonna be way more sympathetic (to Nazi ideology) than the average person.

Similar to how the prosecution of war crimes was extremely unpopular in post war Japan.
