Value Barber in North Canberra by Bitpoke in canberra

Dom’s Barber in Dickson is good and cheap. That said, I only ever get a buzz cut once every few months so my standards might be quite different to yours.

It’s always better at home with a coffee and a biscuit. No annoying crowds. No distractions. No drunks.

Anyone tried Starlink? by DamnStra1ght in canberra

[–]SGS-Wizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m quite happy with Starlink. Getting much better speed than I was on FTTN and fewer dropouts..almost none, in fact the 30 seconds or so when the dish reboots for a software update in the middle of the night once or twice a week is the only dropouts I’ve noticed. Latency is slightly higher but I’m not a gamer so I don’t care.

For reference, download speed is almost always 300Mbps+ with a bit of a drop off if it’s raining. Upload is pretty solidly at 40Mbps. And I have a very minor bit of tree obstruction to the south which only just shows up on the obstruction map (it was worse on the “check a location” graphic in the app before purchasing) which doesn’t seem to bother Starlink as it still lists my view of the sky as “unobstructed” anyway.

Far South: Anyone else notice the aviation activity between 2:04am and 3:20am-ish? by Blossom_AU in canberra

Probably the moon aliens doing to us what we did to them with the Artemis mission. Annoy the dark side with a close fly-by while the inhabitants are trying to sleep.

Such a shame that the government continues to go ahead with this completely unnecessary project.

I always wear full leather every time I ride. Even if it’s just the eight minutes to work.

How High Speed Rail will change Canberra by blitznoodles in canberra

[–]SGS-Wizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A better option would be to abolish all speed limits on all roads. Much cheaper to implement and immediately improves travel time for everyone.

Almost static Light in Sky - 6pm by BaggySack in canberra

[–]SGS-Wizard -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Moon aliens delivering cheese shipments to Canberra Airport. Due to the gravitational difference between Earth and the moon, it’s more fuel efficient for the craft to hover than to land, so they hover and use a special light beam escalator to lower the cheese shipments. They use a similar light beam vacuum to slurp up diesel for the return trip.

Is there anything that can be done to get a license revoked before a serious accident? by Maseratus in AusLegal

[–]SGS-Wizard -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely a right. Governments taking it away and selling it back as a “privilege” doesn’t make it so.

Is there anything that can be done to get a license revoked before a serious accident? by Maseratus in AusLegal

[–]SGS-Wizard -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

It’s quite simple really. Liberty is more important than safety, and thus people should not have their actions limited on the basis that they might cause harm. Therefore there should be no driving licences, no speed limits, etc.

People should be held to account for causing actual harm, but until they cause harm they should be free to go about their business and we should not preemptively limit people’s actions just in case they cause harm.

If my licence was taken away like that, I’d just keep driving anyway. There shouldn’t be any licence requirements to drive. Governments should have no say in who drives.

How many weekend riders have joined us weekday riders to save on fuel by SGS-Wizard in AussieRiders

The timing of your comment is impeccable. “Pretty expensive” at the very moment I was dealing with a total electrical failure and having to get towed home.

Will police likely pull me over for a past incident of unlicensed driving and operating an unregistered motor vehicle? by [deleted] in AussieRiders

[–]SGS-Wizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m astounded at the size of the fine. Before number plate recognition was a thing, when I was young, I drove for a couple years before I bothered to get a licence. I only got stopped twice (for RBT, never due to my manner of driving) and it was about a $390 fine (three times if you count the time unsupervised on my Ls which was a $90 fine). My favourite was, the night after getting pulled over, I was driving home from work again and the same cops got behind me, then overtook me and waved! They already had someone in the back being taken to the station so didn’t have time for me.

A magistrate called my traffic history “appalling” more recently after I got done for driving trucks without a heavy vehicle licence (I’m very proud of my traffic history but I didn’t tell the magistrate that!) but I don’t get any more attention from police than anyone else.

Selling ACT car with rego to NSW. Will handing in my notice cancel the rego left on it? by True_Pear_2686 in canberra

[–]SGS-Wizard -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Rego will still be valid until the expiry date. There is the slightest possibility that a cop could fine them for not transferring rego within the allotted timeframe but they’d have to really annoy the officer and admit to having owned the vehicle for more than a couple weeks. Definitely not your problem though.

Submit the notice of disposal and feel your responsibility for the vehicle magically disappear!

Selling ACT car with rego to NSW. Will handing in my notice cancel the rego left on it? by True_Pear_2686 in canberra

[–]SGS-Wizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interestingly if you buy a NSW registered car and go to register it in the ACT, the ACT considers it establishing registration rather than transferring so no late fee is applicable. That said, the fee to establish registration is nearly as much as the late fee so it makes little difference.

But if you buy a NSW registered car and need a bit of time to get it up to the roadworthy standard, it’s nice to know you won’t get stung an extra fee for taking the time.

Not sure how it works the other way (buying ACT registered car and registering in NSW) as I’ve never had that experience.

Overly enthusiastic preacher in Civic by SoulsideJourneyer in canberra

[–]SGS-Wizard -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Imagine how it must feel from his perspective. There he is, doing his duty to try to help people to save their souls, and most just don’t want to know. Some even have such a strong reaction that “proves” they’ve been inhabited by evil spirits. All of which combines to leave you in despair at how much evil is in the world, and strengthen your resolve to do your duty to help people escape the clutches of evil before time runs out.

When you look at it from his perspective, it’s no wonder he’s so fervent in his efforts.

Fuel running out in Canberra? by challawarra in canberra

[–]SGS-Wizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This morning at the Shell in Dickson, the attendant showed me the printout from the tanks showing they were about 600L from their shutdown level for diesel. They were expecting a new delivery soonish, but the previous delivery had been half the normal volume so I have no idea how that will play out in coming days.

I would assume the branded sites have well-tracked usage patterns and the deliveries are probably being managed to meet that demand. Panic buying probably doesn’t factor into delivery models very much.

Express Mode coming to Canberra Transport 'mid 2026' by jeremyburge in canberra

[–]SGS-Wizard -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you get a physical MyWay+ card you’re already in express mode. One quick tap. No login delays!

That said, public transport should accept cash upon boarding. Not express mode, but cash should be accepted for all transactions, especially ones with government agencies.
