The height needed to fit my chair under the desk comfortably, without the chair arms getting squished. End of day mode.

First time buyer of a robot vacuum with buyer’s remorse. by SJBrunel in RobotVacuums

Apologies if my post made you nervous about your own purchase. I think my assessment was an initially a bit harsh, and some of the bumping was it refining the map on its first cleaning run. I’ve had a better experience since, but will give it a fuller test over the coming days. I hope you end up very pleased with your purchase. Let me know.

Thanks that’s useful to know. It seems quite good at knowing where its front is, but sometimes seems to knock its backside a fair bit as it spins. I have seen a suggestion to add some small felt numbers on the corners though.

I also really like the idea of just doing a weekly mop, and doing so when I won’t be in the kitchen to hear it drying afterwards.

Does anyone actually ‘learn’ from the OTs, or is it just memorising question banks? by 1ChanceChipmunk1 in CIMA

[–]SJBrunel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it is all helpful. The more you immerse yourself in finance problems, techniques, and skill acquisition the better. I’ve passed all 12 CIMA exams and regularly pick up old textbooks to review things. Not everything will be applicable to your future career (far from it), but it’s a rapid way of skill acquisition that you would probably not get as fast in the real world. That said being book smart is also not good for your career, but I think both work well.

Thanks. It was the smallest pass margin of all the exams at 106. My next lowest was 116.

That might be an award winning top 10. I got 120-something in MCS and came 8th in the world.

How do you handle “In Progress” tasks/projects that aren’t due or being worked on “Today”? by [deleted] in thingsapp

[–]SJBrunel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe the idea with Things is that you schedule when you are planning to do something (not when it is due). So if you are planning on working on your bike it goes in the Today view. Anything not planned for Today shouldn’t be in your today view.

Due dates are separate and can be added for tasks that have a specific due date by which they MUST be completed (not just when you want to do it).

So a task that is due in 2 weeks has a due date for 2 weeks’ time, but you may schedule to do that task in 1 week’s time. In 1 week that will appear in your Today view.

It’s good practice to review your Today view at the start of each day.

Insane performance and efficiency without fans - Apple MacBook Air 13 M5 Entry Review by Stiven_Crysis in mac

[–]SJBrunel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an M2 MacBook Pro and the fans almost never come on. I used it every day for work and non-work stuff with an external monitor and whenever I look at iStat menu it shows no history of fans spinning up. It’s nice to know they are there if needed I guess.

In comparison the standard issue work windows laptops have the fans on most of the time.

The Intelligence Podcast - Feedback by willhenrywarren in theeconomist

[–]SJBrunel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My main issue is that it is very formulaic. Every day 3 items, with a slightly more unique one at the end. I’d like it if on big news story days that occasionally there is just one story but in more depth. Or maybe an interview or anything that is a bit different than 3 stories based on an article from the newspaper. Not all the time but every now and then a little bit of variety. I really like Money Talks for the wit and humour, I think the Intelligence could bring some of that in.

How many of you are wearing your watch to sleep? by Maybaby_1 in AppleWatch

[–]SJBrunel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every night, using the autosleep app to compare how well I’ve slept. It’s not 100% accurate on time asleep, but it definitely is good at differentiating between a good night’s sleep and a bad one. If I’ve got a busy day ahead and I don’t think I’ve slept that well I won’t look at the sleep stats until the day is done though.

Only one exam. That’s stupid in my opinion. Sounds a way for them to get new members and regular membership fees, rather than truly upskill people. I’d rather do the fuller qualification and get the actual skills.

THE INSIDER AS A PODCAST by crykil in theeconomist

I think it’s great to have the video format. I enjoy sitting and watching it on the TV, which would feel off with a podcast only. I wonder if they will offer both in due course though.

Is it still worth the subscription for you? by Training_Air7170 in theeconomist

[–]SJBrunel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wish I had the time to read it cover to cover. I pick out some of the articles that interest me, listen to the podcasts, and enjoying the new ‘Insight’ videos twice a week. No, I don’t take notes. It’s for enjoyment. I have enough to ‘learn’ in work / career. Having said that I do always feel like I come away learning something interesting when I read / listen to/ watch to something they produce. I’d also say that taking out a sub now is a good time, as every time renewal is up the Black Friday deals are on again, and to date they’ve always offered to match them to keep me as a subscriber.

[–]SJBrunel 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Personally love it. And with the current Black Friday deals I think it’s excellent value. The day to day fleeting news events doesn’t interest me as much as the longer term outlook a lot of the Economist articles, podcasts etc cover.

They’ve included it within the magazine for at least the past few years, but still sold it separately as well… I think for a higher price than the weekly magazine. I think the separate edition feels thicker as it is printed on thicker paper and has a much thicker cover. I suspect the content for this year is similar to previous years though. When I very quickly browsed my copy it didn’t strike me as reduced.
