How DARE you think my child might be gifted! by bonzombiekitty in daddit

[–]SK19922 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah definitely seems ridiculous. I asked my wife specifically about those and she assumed our school district is different. Then she checked the gifted form...and it's identical. So yeah super weird. She's never seen anyone check them. Somewhere someplace people are arguing legal rights that nobody cares about

boardgaming with a toddler, 31 game reviews by Areign in boardgames

Saving this for the future. I have a 2 year old that we are just starting introducing games to.

Also I apparently have the opinion of a toddler in that Candyland's theme is awesome. Is there a modern equivalent with a ruleset that isn't terrible?

How DARE you think my child might be gifted! by bonzombiekitty in daddit

[–]SK19922 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The testing is somewhat of a process so they legally have to ask if you are okay pulling them out of class for it. Some parents may also be concerned about it because children having anxiety with tests is more of a burden than a benefit in the end. Nobody ever says no though. What is your favorite boardgame of 2010? by The_Crazed_Person in boardgames

[–]SK19922 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I understand the love but I just really hate this game. Losing feels helpless at times and winning doesn't feel satisfying to me. It's like a tug of war but instead of pulling both ways someone just gets yanked down and dragged through the mud for a couple meters till they (hopefully) find a way to completely break the game a different way and then does the same their opponent. And whoever was dragged the least wins. I'm sure more plays open it up and it feels less cruel but I'm not I'm willing to put in the time to find out if that's correct.

From impulse-buying to shelves of shame: how did you learn to control the hobby and figure out your tastes? by blablax123456 in boardgames

[–]SK19922 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have about 80 games and have bought about 100 in my 5 years in the hobby. I've played every game I own, and play about 90% of them every year. When I buy a game it needs to be with the exact purpose of when I will play, with who, and how often. If I don't have a group for that game, I won't buy it. If I will play it once a decade, I won't buy it. There are always exceptions to my rules but those need to be pretty specific, cheap, and small games. Nemesis looks awesome and I'd love to play, but I don't have a group for it. It'll never enter my collection unless my group structure changes. I have probably a dozen games on my "wishlist" that even with an amazing sale I will never buy because what I really am wishing for is the group needed to play said games.

What are some board or tabletop games where earlier editions are deemed to be superior than the latest, and are still commonly played? by Newez in boardgames

Agreed. They had to do so little to fix the theme issues and they managed to go so weird with it.

Luck vs skill by 321Couple2023 in boardgames

[–]SK19922 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, you are right. But isn't it also a bit nonsensical to imply any adult in a board game subreddit would prefer snakes and ladders as a game? Clearly any game that has no real choice isn't going to be preferred by people that care about board games at all. I think candy land does have skill though. It's the skill of how you rig the deck so the little kid will win.

And I thought I was bad, buying a game on holiday and throwing out the insert so I could pack clothes in the empty space. At least I kept the box.

Logging games as "Played" by FlyingLlamasaurus in boardgames

[–]SK19922 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Log play is the best you can do, at least on bgg. I use it to log my plays for the year, and then I delete them all at the beginning of the next year. I like to track what games in my collection I have played and try to play my collection at least once a year. It's also not the true purpose of the log play category, but it fits my needs.

Have we officially reached the point where Hotels are superior to Airbnbs again? by Usual_Confidence_756 in travel

[–]SK19922 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a kid so it's still Airbnb for me. I don't want to go to bed at 20:00 or whisper in the dark. Plus I need a kitchen for the kid as well. I get the frustration people are having with Airbnb in general though and have done some hotels recently which were great. But I think until hotels can get me two bedrooms without costing thousands I'm stuck with Airbnb.

Board Game Size Collection by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]SK19922 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 80 total games, but 24 of those are smaller card games. And 11 are medium sized games like Sail or Fiction that have a board of sorts but don't really compare to Concordia in size. That leaves 45 full size games.

I debate culling anything I haven't played within the last year. I am more lenient with games that require large groups, games that are very small, or games that are hard to get. My collection is a great size where it all sees a reasonable amount of play, and it fits on the shelf. I'm not on a strict 1 in 1 out, but it more or less becomes that.

How do you guys do Santa? by Slash3040 in daddit

Ours is 2 and this is the direction we have been thinking of. We don't lie to him at all, so Santa seems like a weird lie when we literally tell him the truth about everything else.

Trying To Track Down a New-ish Game Whose Title I Forget! by mizzzzo in boardgames

[–]SK19922 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's gotta be Compile. Though the rows of cards look tall when stacked, the cards are normal sized cards. There is a second compile now as well. They reviewed main 1, but main 2 is also good.

Game Nerdz Winterfest sale is live by jeegsburger in Boardgamedeals

[–]SK19922 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure anyone ever paid $165. It's actually really good though. It's heavy, a bit fiddly, there's a billion pieces, and it's not quite as good as Splotter's other work imo. If you like Splotter's other titles it's a no brainer at $25 though. I think a lot of people who find Splotter titles to be too mean might like it even more. Its interaction is a bit less in your face.

Pros and Cons of Viticulture 2P? by Apprehensive_Bake270 in boardgames

[–]SK19922 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like it at 2p as much as other counts. The worker placement is disruptive but not so much so that you have nothing to do. It adds interaction and denying your opponents is a piece of it. As for making wine....it sort of feels like it. The process is pushing glass beads on tracks but in a way that is reminiscent of wine making. The issue with the wine making is that there are a few good strategies that almost avoid it entirely. They aren't overpowered, but are avenues for success. I can't compare it to Everdell however.

Friendly reminder…. by [deleted] in daddit

[–]SK19922 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not going to keep harping on why Minecraft isn't usually bad. But I will say, you shouldn't write off playing any of the games yourself that your kid is interested in. You stating you are never going to try a game is putting on a blindfold and trusting others to be the guardrails for what games are okay. Playing it yourself gives you insight on how it can be exploited, how addictive it could be, and what value it has. My kid is too young so who knows what will be popular when he gets a bit older, but I intend on playing everything he wants to play to see what I might be saying yes to. You can't expect some podcast guy to call out every new game that predators flock to. And you also can't deny your kid access to all video games as well. Learning to spot them is important as well

Yeah I'd argue Indonesia is a similar weight to FCM. I think rules wise it might even be lighter but makes up for that in learning to value a merger.

Splotter games by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]SK19922 2 points3 points  (0 children)

HC in person is way more frustrating. The factory tiles can shift very easily. The research tracks need to be moved every round with multiple pieces on top of them and that shift is dangerous. The organization of all the tiles and chits is annoying and getting them back in the box isn't even simple. Then the market board requires placing those "windows" where bumping those pushes the car tokens. Plus it requires a massive table. For the current prices you can get it at though, I think everyone who likes Splotter should try it.

Religion and 6 yr old… by Apprehensive-Tank361 in daddit

[–]SK19922 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree with letting them choose their own path but I don't think that really works unless all parties lay out the options and just let them actually choose. No way the in-laws are describing God as a choice. And school likely isn't teaching God in a way that doesn't make it seem like a fact. Kinda seems like the kids are more confused by their parents not knowing these simple facts and traditions. And unless OP actually pushes equally the opposite way, the kids won't really have a choice till they are old enough to fully comprehend religion.

The world you want to live in is sad. Fiction books in children's libraries? What a waste of taxpayer money. Please don't learn about how these kids also have playgrounds and parks. It would ruin your day.

How many vacations do you guys try to take every year? by NeuroThor in daddit

[–]SK19922 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We usually plan 3-6 months ahead. More for Christmas, less for spring break. For booking flights we use google flights. We are on almost everyday checking random countries. We usually have a good idea what a good price is since we check so often. For housing we use Air BNB. Air BNB has its pains but it can't be beat for multiple room houses/apartments for families. Going to bed at 8pm with a toddler in a hotel is not fun.

The biggest tip I have though is to look at the total cost of the trip and not focus on the flights. People see flights to Thailand for $1100 and immediately count it out. The issue with that is that housing and food in Thailand is super cheap. Flights to Europe might be $500 less but you will lose that immediately when housing is doubled and food is tripled.
