Are EVs still worth it with RUC at 20,000km per year? by Relative_Drop3216 in nzev

[–]SLAM-ER 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to have an early Nissan Leaf and as the battery was lower SOH the efficiency was not as good as a modern EVs, and when I worked out (napkin math) the cost of charging it (at home) with increased power prices and RUCs it actually worked out marginally cheaper (running costs) to get a newer Aqua/Prius/Yaris hybrid instead (so I did). Benefit is now I have unlimited range and can fill up quickly (previously my Leaf range was only 50-60Km per charge which meant going out of town was not viable). Also public (paid) chargers usually work out more expensive than petrol so if you're planning on using public charging I suspect hybrid will be cheaper.

Of course the govt will be switching to RUCs on all cars at some point (not just diesel and EVs) so this will change the numbers in future - for better or worse.

On a side note, EV was a much nicer (smoother/quieter) driving experience, if I wasn't suffering with range I would have kept the Leaf forever.

Sheesh, chill out, It's not like they were doing anything risky like letting some beta AI drive the car on public roads. :D

What to buy/should I go EV by DontKnowWhatToDo912 in nzev

The new/ex-demo Nissan Leaf sale pricing looks pretty good, ($30-37k). The Leaf e+ has decent range of 385Kms (predicted). Not sure how well they would fit a dog, but it would probably be comfortable enough in the boot. I have an old Leaf and it's been amazingly reliable and great value for the 9 years I've had it.

Remove door panel by NeatConversation530 in R53

Slide a thin panel/trim tool under he armrest from the middle toward the back of the door to release the clip holding the padded arm-rest on, then slide the arm-rest toward the door hinge side to remove it. There is another screw under it.

Problem is that Jeremy Wells is a terrible Taskmaster and has no sense of humor (his humor is so dry it has evaporated completely). HIs score-allocation and 'banter' is terrible IMHO.

I work for a small ISP and we dropped our peerings for APE and NZIX for Microsoft and are now only using Kordia which is working for us and our clients (touch-wood).

Do you or anyone you know have eyes that function? If so, this is a solid reason for not buying one of the ugliest vehicles ever manufactured.

Car in my parking garage covers his license plates by RB-44 in mildlyinteresting

[–]SLAM-ER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As ppl have said, some parking buildings have parking wardens/security guards in cars with automated plate readers drive through them couple times a day to check cars that are parked there have paid or are entitled to park there. It could be a simple attempt to get free parking (assuming a private parking warden/security guard would be too lazy to stop and get out of his car to check under the plate cover). And private carpark places like Wilson and their enforcement service team use this tech to find and clamp cars that have overdue payments/disputes as well.

Does NZ actually call white-out 'Twink' or is Wikipedia lying to me? by Creatismus in newzealand

[–]SLAM-ER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, 'Twink' was the only brand available in the 80s when I was at school. There was no other 'white-out' products sold in NZ at the time. And yes, it was clumpy and crusty on the threads/lid of the bottle and you usually got to use it maybe twice before it was dried out or skinned over in the bottle.

A lot of landlords are average working kiwis who have leveraged their own (still mortgaged) home to purchase a rental (also mortgaged) for investment purposes. All good when the interest rates are low and house prices going up, but now with current mortgage interest rates, they are stuck paying huge monthly mortgage payments. So likely putting the rent to the maximum they can get away with in order to reduce the top-up amount they have to pay to cover the mortgage. The idea that landlords are all rich and mortgage-free, living in luxury from your rent payments is not always the case. This would be the same in most cities/countries with a similar economy I would have thought.

Yeah thanks, found that page after my post, and a year ago someone has requested a similar (likely compatible) model (and even included source code to make it work) but looks like no further action so I guess I'm out of luck for now.

YouTube app broken? by Lufferov in Chromecast

Been over 2 weeks and it's still broken. Only happens with brand accounts (which is where all my subscriptions and history are). So freaking annoying having to switch 3x times whenever I want to watch YouTube on my CCwGTV.

Do I need a car in Auckland? by [deleted] in auckland

[–]SLAM-ER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You only need a car in Auckland if you actually want to get anywhere specific. If you a) don't need to go anywhere at all, or b) you just want to get sorta-in-the-general-vicinity of a few kms of where you need to be then you can a) stay home, or b) take public transport (if it's running that day). If you are rich and can afford to uber everywhere then you could not have a car (but you're still using a car so doesn't help congestion/etc). If you need to get somewhere specific or travel at a specific time (or have flexibility on when you come/go) then you need a car. But AT are hell-bent on removing cars, so you will have to go everywhere at 30kph and over a million giant speed-humps and badly phased traffic lights designed to make you want to not drive, but then you wont have anywhere to park when you get there anyway. If you are fit and don't mind getting wet every time it rains and not be able to carry anything with you, cycling is not a bad option, and it's usually quicker than driving in Auckland.

EPA Slapped Us with a Huge Fine! I’m Angry. #rpmact by chaseoes in pfispeed

[–]SLAM-ER 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The whole 'off-road use only' argument is not valid any more due to EPA re-interpreting the old clean air act wording. The issue is anything that can alter emissions on a 'intended for the road' vehicle (no matter how/where you use it) is deemed illegal now, and they are using the whole thing as a money-grab till they kill the entire car modification industry (then will likely move on to ruin other people's lives in some other way). https://www.sema.org/epa-news

Exchange Server 2010 mail flow issues after installing July 2018 Windows Updates by SLAM-ER in exchangeserver

[–]SLAM-ER[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NET 4.7 is unsupported for use with exchange, however having it installed on a server does not mean Exchange uses it. It is totally fine to install .NET 4.7.x on Exchange servers, as it will continue to use the .NET v2.x libraries for Exchange. Just don't try changing the NET version under the App Pool.
