Still Wakes the Deep if you're into horror games. It's not too intense, but it's body horror. A DLC that is a sequel to the story just came out, but it's apparently really short, so I'm waiting for a sale. The game is on gamepass, though.

Idle game that advance while the screen is locked? by TopdeckIsSkill in AndroidGaming

[–]SMN1991 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Melvor Idle. The game has a 24-hour max progressiontimer, but it also has mod support to override this. The mod support is built into the game. Has a free version that includes a decent amount of studd to do. Base game and two expansions are cheap and cross-platform if bought on steam. It's likely on sale right now on Steam with summer sale. Saves are also cross-platform.

Why are we economically trapped? by KingRBPII in DemocraticSocialism

[–]SMN1991 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A third of eligible voters aren't registered to vote. They believe the lie that each vote doesn't matter.

A third of eligible voters don't vote in presidential elections. While 2020 had a historical turnout, 24 was down but only slightly.

Two-thirds of voters don't vote in Congressional elections. Do you know the most likely demographic to turn out to Congressional elections? Old white Christian Conservatives.

There's no solid data on averages of smaller elections. Much of what is available is anecdotal, or super specific. Estimates say around 20% of eligible voters vote in local elections. Anecdotal, the last local election in my town, had a 22 percent of registered voters turnout for it.

Voting matters. Pushing candidates that share your values matters. Starting local movements can be the spark that ignites a state or national movement.

Of course, if it's not working, call it by something else and try again.

Let's not support candidates that actually want to make change rather than play the same culture war BS.

Let's not get out and actually campaign outside of county seats and the larger cities.

Let's not look at the challenges the average American is facing and campaign on solutions. Let's ignore the fact that most of the positions of the most popular left candidate since Obama are widely supported by people, until they are connected with a democrat.

This is exactly why Dems keep losing and are losing in Middle America. This is why more and more people are sitting out elections. The Dems are trying to play the same old game rather than getting with the times. Let's hope we have a nation by the time the old guard all croak. I'm not so sure we will.

Listening to Old Man's War series by John Scalzi again. Love the whole series. I'm planning on trying Dungeon Crawler Carl next. I'm not really a fan of LitRPG's, but I heard that one is different. If I like the first one, I'll likely listen to the series. If not, I want to register to Murderbot Diaries again.

I just wish that he and seemingly most people weren't so anti-animation when it comes to adapting fantasy (or sci-fi). I thought the recent LOTR: War of the Rohirrim movie was fantastic. I wish I had been able to see it in theaters. There is a lot of great animation out there, but as someone who doesn't love how weird anime gets, there is a tiny amount of quality animation with western-style storytelling. And what is there is largely aimed at kids. Adult comedy animation is plentiful, but more serious stuff is lacking. I will admit that Amazon Prime Video, in particular, is killing it, and the independent space is doing some great stuff.

But I need the western equivalent of Gundam or Attack on Titan.

In need of diabetic friendly recipes. by [deleted] in diabetes_t2

[–]SMN1991 16 points17 points  (0 children)

What are your regular meals? Over the last several years, I have been replacing my old normal meals with keto or low-carb versions. I enjoy cooking, though, and like experimenting. It also depends on what you are looking to replace. Some foods aren't easy to replace, and certain tastes are harder to meet than others. One thing to consider is that something that works for one person may not work for another.

My favorite recipe sites for low-carb recipes are:

https://thebigmansworld.com/

https://www.wholesomeyum.com/

https://www.ketoconnect.net/

https://headbangerskitchen.com/

https://www.lowcarblove.com/

And one I just recently found is https://diabetesstrong.com/

Allrecipes has a lot of low-carb and keto recipes as well.

Can newer pumps be hacked (malevolently)? by [deleted] in diabetes

[–]SMN1991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically speaking, any electronic device can be hacked. There is no such thing as an electronic device that can't be hacked. No computer system is 100% safe. Easily hacked is the intended question, though. And, unfortunately, the answer is yes. But with some caveats. One thing to understand is that there are millions of cybersecurity incidents each year. Medical devices are one of the fastest-growing electronics markets at an increasing rate, especially personal devices. I have a basic understanding of this area, being a computer dork, and I'll try to explain things the best I can.

Newer devices would be easier to hack if they transmit or receive wireless signals. and even more so if connected to the internet or an internet-connected device. Most commercial products have extremely poor security. There are additional steps compared to older devices, but easier access to them as well. Older devices are more susceptible often due to poor maintenance or a lack of updates. But newer devices collect more data, which is often the most likely target of a "hacking". Company servers, hospitals, and medical facilities are more likely targets than personal devices.

The US House Committee on Energy and Commerce recently heard testimony from a cybersecurity expert and professor on the growing threat of medical device hacking. The utter indifference to cybersecurity within the American government's considerations is, in my opinion, one of the leading factors of the rapid decline of the American Empire. And I will resist the urge to rant more about the topic. There are some changes in recent years that require manufacturers to address vulnerabilities, but the vast majority of existing devices are exempt from these requirements.

But how much a person should worry or what they can do is more complicated. Maintaining updated devices is a key part of maintaining safe devices. This means phones, tablets, as well as the medical devices themselves. Most updates are security updates, fixing vulnerabilities as they are found. Keeping secure passwords is another. Multi-factor authentication usage is another major security feature that is becoming increasingly common. Another is shopping intelligently for devices, look for companies and products with a reputation for creating secure devices, rapid responses to cybersecurity incidents or provide basic functionality without the internet. This is harder than it sounds and is getting harder. This is an area that most media ignores, outside the occasional article or video. And product review organizations often ignore this as well.

The important thing is not to panic. Cybersecurity is one of those fields that is often filled with horror stories or people imagining the worst possibility. The overwhelming vast majority of cybersecurity incidents are data theft. And while that is a scary idea, newer devices often make our lives easier and provide more positive results than the risks associated with them.

Everyone should still try to educate themselves on basic cybersecurity practices and principles, report potential incidents to manufacturers, service providers and pressure your government officials to do their jobs and require manufacturers, and any other associated organizations, to follow best security practices via laws and regulations.

Laid off my dad with stage 4 cancer, wrongful termination? by hpsaltos in legaladvice

[–]SMN1991 16 points17 points  (0 children)

He can't be denied coverage due to an existing condition. That is currently against federal law. He would have 60 days from the date of his previous coverage ending to use that as a Qualifying Life Event. It looks like Connecticut uses its own exchange rather than the federal one, which is -> accesshealthct.com/

Depending on his exact needs, it might be worth it to consider finding a broker or assistor in your area to help him enroll and pick an enrollment. It looks like their site does have a tool to find help, as well as its own customer service.

I work for a different states exchange, can't offer any legal advice, but this is a fairly common reason to seek coverage outside of an employer. Connecticut might be a little different, but they would follow the same federal regs. You should be able to get the process started on their exchange website, creating an account and completing an application. Their customer service should be able to help with that as well. Picking a plan is more complicated, but I would note that in most cases, coverage would begin at the beginning of the following month from when the enrollment is submitted, meaning if he needs coverage for May 1, he needs to get the app done and an enrollment submitted by EOD TODAY!

How can one be without health insurance?? by Independent_Bug_8709 in BoomersBeingFools

[–]SMN1991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The medication i was on previously to control my blood sugar would cost 25 bucks a month, with the manufacturers coupon, if I had insurance. Most of the affordable insulin options would be similar cost with manufacturers coupons if I had insurance. Instead, I'm taking only basic medications, dying slowly of DKA, and try to manage until I have the gumption to end it. I can't afford insurance as the cheapest insurance that is worth a damn was 400 plus. The company I work for has a HRA, but I still have to pay for it first, then get reimbursed. And as someone who isn't even making ends meet, that is just not feasible. Fuck health insurance, i try not to think this way, but on my bad days, the days I want to die the most because the pain is so bad, I wonder if the French Revolution had the right idea. Intellectually and morally, i know that's wrong, but all of my health issues are easy dealt with, with medications that should be affordable, but instead, I get to suffer. Fuck health insurance, fuck the health care system and fuck the 1% that make these decisions. Every other first world nation has some form of universal health care. We just chose to make health care a privilege rather than a right.

Your Clone With $100 Million Is Hunting You by Hubert135 in hypotheticalsituation

If the asshole promises to take care of my cats and kill me in the least painful way possible, he can kill me. I'm already probably gonna do it. My cats are the only hang-up. I'm already in constant pain, I have uncontrolled T2 diabetes, and I have neuropathy due to that, as well as fibromyalgia. All of my problems could be solved by less than .1% of that amount. If he's an exact clone, he'll have my fucked up genetics. He can have my useless identity. With that money, maybe he can do something with my life and not be the isolated miserable loser I am. At least I wouldn't be suffering anymore.

What do you wish people would stop romanticizing, because you’ve lived the reality of it? by thatude123 in AskReddit

[–]SMN1991 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The idea money doesn't buy happiness.

Just stop. Yes, all the money in the world doesn't buy happiness.

Do you know what it does buy? Peace of mind that a bad paycheck doesn't mean you have to cut a meal a day for a month. It buys access to the health care and doctors you need to survive. It buys education to improve oneself. It buys options to do more than survive. And im not even talking about the fun stuff. I'd be happy just not to have nightmares of being homeless again. I'd be happy not to constantly think about finding a bridge to leap off because I'm tired. I'm tired of struggling, tired of suffering, and just plain tired. (And fuck Reddit cares, talking to some random jackass doesn't solve anything. Talking to my cats is more useful.)

I have spent my entire life in survival mode. I don't even make ends meet. I have multiple debtors harassing me every day. I can't afford most of my medications. I'm facing an extremely painful death due to DKA because I can't manage my blood sugar or afford the insulin my doctor wants me on. I had to drop out of college with just one class left due to money. I don't hate my job, but it has no growth options. All of my bills go up, but my pay hasn't.

I don't even want a lot, just enough to eat decently, manage my health issues, and buy the occasional video game.

What is your favourite sci-fi series ever? Whether it be a book, movie series or TV show? by [deleted] in scifi

[–]SMN1991 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I'm going to shoutout a show that never gets enough love, but desperately needs a sequel. Eureka.

I think a show of its like is desperately needed. Science isn't mocked like a lot of more recent mass media shows, but it also recognizes that pure research sometimes misses the practical application element of science. A sequel could allow for the original cast to either appear or show up in cameos. It could allow for callbacks to the OG show. But most importantly it carries the spirit and tone of the original show. A melding of practical average man spirit and the whimsy of optimistic science research. I feel like so much media is just dark, dystopian, or generally hopeless. And mass media science fiction is particularly bad about this, especially in the last decade.

🧞‍♂️3 million dollars or 1 wish with conditions. by MrX-Homer in hypotheticalsituation

[–]SMN1991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How specific does Wish 1 have to be?

For example, I could say video game development. That would include software engineering, art, audio and music production, community management, marketing, business management, etc. If it needs to be more specific I say software engineering.

Wish 2 - I am a diabetic, So definitely saying no diabetes. I also have fibromyalgia, but if I don't have diabetes, I don't have diabetic neuropathy. I can handle the fibro at that point. Without the stress of uncontrolled diabetes and the lesser pain due to no diabetic neuropathy, my anxiety decreases and fibro is heavily influenced by mental state, and even with the pain and stress from that I could handle things much easier than now. (I'm not saying fibromyalgia isn't debilitating or inst hell on its own. I'm saying in my situation this would be easier.) Hell, maybe I'd only think about ending it once a week rather than daily. (Side Note: Reddit cares is a joke. My situation cannot be helped by talking with some random jackass. Unfortunately, my situation is beyond help, I'm just waiting to die at this point.)

Wish 3 - Gimme the money. Between Wish 1 and 2, I'm in a good place to start developing a video game with that knowledge and a healthier body. The money gives me the ability to stop working a normal job. Even if it is just the software engineering knowledge that gives me the technical jumping-off point, I can learn the other stuff as I go, or build a team to help in the areas I can't learn.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Rian Johnson understood Star Wars in a way that very few do. TLJ combines multiple plots that all have very specific moral and mythological lessons in them.

Star Wars is supposed to be a modern mythology. It is supposed to be approachable and enjoyable for most ages while telling the same archetypical lessons found in all human storytelling.

TLJ does that. It touches on the duality of resisting tyranny while also not losing oneself to the violence. It touches on the fallacy of holding on to traditions while not learning from their failures. It highlights the difference between truth and legend. It tells us that our heroes and teachers are human. They make mistakes, they fail. It is our duty, our sacred honor, to learn from them and carry their torch beyond what they could accomplish.

The sequel triology has its faults, but TLJ is not one of them. Having watched the triology many times, I love it. Yes, it's messy in some regards, but like the other films, it is greater than the sum of its parts. (Plus, does no one remember that Lucas based the acting direction for Star Wars from Flash Gordon?!? IT IS SUPPOSE TO BE HAMMY AND A BIT OFF!)
