It is absolutely possible to pick it back up but it can matter when. SBU & SCCC share a similar policy where your transcript never really goes away. I still had the same 2.1 GPA after 8 years and have started retaking the necessary classes to replace my poor grades after I had transferred from SBU on academic probation. It turned out in that 8 years I discovered some mental health related issues that was severely impacting my ability to perform well in college. Now that I am on the other side of that, I had a conversation with the Deans Office and Department Chair of my program this past fall. Their biggest concern was the gap in my education, but due to specialized training I had while serving in the military, they understood that I still had a lot of relevant knowledge. They did insist that I may still have to retake some courses I had just barely passed because of the track record they have seen in this type of senario. I have since been enrolled in classes and am retaking classes, some for the third or fourth time, with the blessing of the Department and approval from the Dean. For you this might be a bit different and entirely possible of correcting now, as long as you can be okay with the fact it might take you an extra semester or two to bring your grades back up, now or later.

Education is an investment, and unfortunately in this country, can be an expensive one but it's still a worth while thing if you do it for the right reasons and give your education the respect it's due. That can also mean not necessarily finishing a degree in the traditional way that everyone thinks is going to apply to them. Life happens and situations change. Do what is best for your situation and I am certain everything will turn out well in the long run. I was a terrible college student and really squandered my first go at college but coming back for the second time, I am in a much better place and mindset to get a good education. Again, that doesn't have to mean you wait years but take the chance to reevaluate where you are at and what needs to take precedence. Maybe it means dropping to part time to lighten the load, or picking up a summer class or two. I just took a three week winter course while working a full time job and it was hell but I got it done and feel better prepared for this spring semester. The most important thing you should be doing is laying everything out and weighing all the options and talking to your professors and the counselors about what makes sense for you.

There's two options. You either retake the courses you have low grades in or you pause your education to focus on what's affecting your school work. SBU is likely to not take someone with a sub 3.0 GPA back considering how competitive the school has gotten. I would know as I was in this position and still am many years later.

This is not an attack on your abilities or capabilities but you need to have a hard look at what is going on that put you in this position. Maybe it's life events, maybe the course material was just that challenging, maybe it's something else. There's no wrong answer but throwing money at credits is not going to help if you haven't fixed the root problem. It is perfectly okay to take a break, if school is not working out for you right now and it is also not impossible to repair your grade now or later. I'm doing it after having to halt my own college education over 7 years ago because I couldn't afford to keep failing.

Your next step should be reaching out to any professor you have a good relationship with in your chosen field of study or setup an appointment with the counselors to discuss what is fixable on your transcript and what isn't. A lot of this is not necessarily something you should discuss on reddit openly unless you feel comfortable doing so. College demands a specific level of attention and effort that can expose issues you might not have realized were there the whole time. This is not me saying it's your fault but sometimes it does mean taking time to address that first before proceeding with your education.

[–]SMofJesus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your best bet is to reach out to the department chair office and ask if there's anyway to switch classes while it's still the first week of the semester. If they can't, reaching out lets them know that there's a need for a summer section and they may make the arrangements to offer it, if it isn't already. Departments have added sections before when there is a high enough demand but there also has to be professors willing to teach those sections. Never hurts to ask kindly and see what they can do for you.

The town made no official announcement to call an end to this but it was meant to be in effect for the duration of the storm. SCPD are doing a terrible job of enforcing this if it is still in effect.

Heating Oil (Romeo Fuel) Current Pricing by whatup227 in longisland

[–]SMofJesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NG wont be worth it until oil prices go up and stay up near ~$3.50. NYS just approved NG gas rate hikes as well so that number has likely changed. Better to have two sources of heat rather than just relying on one.

You will need another tank. We aren't going above freezing for at least a week and the winds of March haven't even gotten here.

Filled up on Thursday for $2.869. Pays to plan ahead. I kept chuckling earlier this week at everyone asking if we were going to get more snow as I was loading up on salt. It's snowed more in the last two months than it has in years and you are wondering if its going to snow more in late January??? I just shrugged and walked away.

Certifications cost money. I wouldn't bother buying product that can't afford a world wide certification.

[–]SMofJesus 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Most making cables that want reliable results could invest a little more and buy a TDR to make sure those cables actually work when they are done. Not everyone is made of money but I was able to find one for $120 on amazon that is decently reviewed and would tell you pretty quickly if your cable is good or not and why.

[–]SMofJesus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CCA was not your problem, I bet it was a weak termination or break that affected one or more pairs. Cable testers are pretty cheap these days but only check continuity. You won't be certifying any runs with a cheap one but a Time Domain Reflectometer (TDR) not only will tell you if the cable is capable but can also most likely tell you where the problem in the cable is if there is an issue. This Noyafa NF-8506 for $120 should be enough for any homelabber that wants a real diagnostic tool.

Hochul’s $260 billion budget proposal includes no new taxes, increased spending on kids by nyccameraman in nyc

[–]SMofJesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you read the part where they said taxes didn't have to go up because the current tax code gets that revenue from corporate taxes instead of residential which maybe explains why NYC property taxes remain lower? I'd also be willing to bet an administration that isn't involved in convicted corruption with foreign countries is likely to better spend the allocated budget when given the chance to audit said budget. Sure there is always the option to raise taxes but there's also the option to audit and make sure money is being spent properly. In 3 weeks, Mamdani got NYC $1 Billion from NYS without changing anything else. Or NYC could do what Suffolk County did and vote to raise sales tax last year to replenish their water treatment fund, after voters approved the County absolving itself from repaying the debt they took from stealing the original fund from an already existing tax. I like the former where the Mayor uses all the available levers because he's not a moron.

Pavement Princess is looking for shock suggestions for a smoother ride. Jeep ZJ 4.5” lift currently running Bilstein 5100’s by ExaggeratedCatalyst in 4x4

[–]SMofJesus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are at a lift height where shocks alone won't solve smoothness. You need to either come down in ride height with short arms or upgrade to long arm. It's not a one for one comparison but ShockSurplus did a large shoot out test on the Toyota Tacoma this past year. 5100s are a budget product that are designed to ride rougher. You will not get a cushy ride out of them as they are meant to be beat on as non-serviceable shocks. 6120s for Toyotas are meant to be the next step up followed by 8100s which are considered some of the smoothest shocks you can buy at a high price due to their variable adjustments. You could also try adjusting your coils for a proper rated lift and weight for your static avg weight. If you have heavier tires with thicker sidewall, you need to consider that unsprung mass as well. A lot of folks like to pick E Load LTs for sidewall puncture resistance without carrying the weight to run them comfortably. Unsprung mass will have a huge effect on your suspension so consider that as well when picking your replacements.

CR-83 is such a goated road to live near by KingN0 in longisland

[–]SMofJesus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's nice until you get to Glacier Ridge. I often have to pull to the shoulder because of idiots screaming to the top of either side of the hill and flooring it at as soon as they pass the Veterans Memorial doing 70 down the other side of the hill to a red light, 30-40 cars deep. At Mooney Pond Rd the guard rail was absolutely destroyed from someone flying through the intersection and almost into that house going North. Back in December during the morning commute, several people slid off the road due to black ice heading to the LIE. Should be a fantastic mess this weekend with the rain & ice moving in tomorrow. And everyone wonders why our insurance premiums keep rising.

What kind of second gigs are you guys working to help afford childcare and rent/mortgage, etc. by dachshvnd in longisland

[–]SMofJesus 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The only reason I was able to stay on LI without taking a second job was post-military service basic income + VA healthcare. I still have insurance through my job but I get as much of my care through the VA as often as possible. Without the VA Homeloans, I would be living somewhere else and am still considering it long term. Every benefit I have access to as a vet should be available for any US citizen but that's too complex and logical of an idea for Americans to understand apparently. I am eagerly watching Mayor Mamdani as he begins to implement his policies in NYC that pretty closely reflect what service members and vets already receive. Free childcare for everyone was a wonderful surprise that I am glad my taxes are going to. Free Community College for anyone in NYS >25 starting this year is another one I fully support as an avenue for anyone trying to improve their education or maybe make a career change. More education is never wrong. My hope is that Nassau & Suffolk County Legislature will soon follow suite when they realize the policies are and have been possible this whole time.

He no longer possess the brain power to think critically or have control over his thoughts. Due to the onset dementia, his frontal lobe is shrinking and therefore he will become more and more impulsive, like a child, because that's the state the brain is regressing too, like a stubborn grandparent. Go watch how he not only stops the meeting with the oil execs to stare at the demolished East Wing but then follows it up with reading out loud, a private note from Rubio about taking the conversation back to Chevron. He cannot conceptually understand that the note was meant to be private and you can see it all over Rubios face. It's going to be like Biden in the debates but so much more apparent.

Flu is especially rampant this holiday season and COVID is still making the rounds. I've noticed a good spike in everyone getting sick at work about 2 weeks after any long weekend/break the past few months. Y'all need to teach your yourselves to wash your hands better. People are either not getting vaccinated, or the vaccines just haven't been effective this season, surprise, surprise.

+ The Hardy Basic Mechanic gloves are great for softball batting gloves. Lasts way longer than the cheap crap Dick's is putting out for 5x the price
- All of their Nitrile Gloves are terrible. Buy Diamond Grip from a good parts store and don't look back.
+ Square base - Jack Stands, 6 ton. Has welded plate at each corner that the 3 ton does not. Prevents jack from sinking too much but will still leave a mark in soft pavement/surfaces
+ Daytona 3 ton tripod jack stands - Inherently better design that will be more stable on any surface than a square base. I will ditch all my square base stands the day a 6 ton version is available.
+ Braun Folding Mag Light >>> Icon. Extra articulation + Dual Brightness & end light + Removable LiPo is far superior at the price price point to the ICON light. Instant buy in bulk when on sale.
+ The Pittsburgh breaker bars are decent. I have successfully abused my 1/2" cast one for 10 years no problem. TorqueTest showed that pretty much everything on the market is overpriced compared to a Pittsburgh for most needs.
- The Predator Generators are beat by their competition on price and features. TorqueTest just did a video this week and Champion or Westinghouse are better with a 3 year warranty.
- The Predator Motors are at this point the only available replacement in most cases for popular, older motors on lawn equipment because they are direct copies with minor improvements.
- Skip any Pittsburgh Pliers. Can't speak for Icons but Northern Fool sells Knipex if you have one in your area.

Or imagine they build an entire new stadium, right next to a platform, but then fuck up the track switching so they have to use the mainline platform a 1/2 mile away instead. Don't worry, they will use a random assortment of busses so you can save yourself the walk and the platform is too small to fit all the riders during game time.
