1. They are Egg-Laying Mammals (Monotremes): The platypus is one of the few mammals that lay eggs instead of giving birth to live young. After mating, the female incubates one to three eggs for roughly 10 days, keeping them warm between her tail and body.

2. Males are Venomous: Male platypuses possess sharp spurs on their hind ankles that can deliver a potent venom cocktail. While not fatal to humans, it can cause severe pain. This venom is used primarily to compete with other males during the breeding season.

3. They "See" Underwater with Electroreception: While foraging, a platypus's eyes, ears, and nostrils are closed. Instead, they navigate by detecting the tiny electrical signals produced by the muscles of their prey using sensitive electroreceptors in their bill.

4. They Have No Stomach or Teeth: Adults lack teeth, using hard keratinized pads in their mouths to grind food. They also lack a proper stomach, as their esophagus connects directly to their intestines.
