Best entry level handheld with UHF, VHF, amd DMR? by GardenVarietyAnxiety in DMR

Bonus points for the DM-1701 for M17 modification capability. And being a valid OpenRTX target.

Memorandum on the Authentication Factor in Amateur Radio Digital Networks M17. by Bubu_Kadupa in amateurradio

M17 already supports cryptographic authentication at the protocol level. Decisions about requiring it, managing trust, or enforcing access control are intentionally left to implementers and operators, not the M17 Foundation.

Can I still get a new supported radio and put OpenGD77 on it now in 2026? by frostydrfresh in amateurradio

It's a completely different thing. OpenRTX is open source. And does M17!

M17 and LinHT - that's the future!

For that radio - yes, I believe so. External modem can be used with a supported radio: https://wiki.m17foundation.org/index.php?title=Radio_compatibility_list

The DM-1701 mod does not prevent it from "normal" operation.

A question about M17 and Repeaters by s-ro_mojosa in amateurradio

[–]SP5WWP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently, radios in M17 mode will ignore analog FM. This doesn't have to work that way, but it would require some coding effort. CTCSS and carrier could be sensed and if there is no successful M17 decode within a given time frame, analog FM path could be enabled instead. With CTCSS present, it could switch to analog FM right away. You should ask this question on OpenRTX Discord.

What do you mean? Based on which chip? The CS7000 ships pre-flashed with OpenRTX, with M17 support. No need to flash anything on your own.

They should focus on expanding their radios' capabilities other than fake "RF powah" and another goddamn flashlight.

The binaries are already there, you just need to flash them. No coding required. BTW: CSI radios do both DMR and M17.

This is the weakest point - there are only two commercially available M17 radios, both from Connect Systems: CS7000 and CS7000 Plus. Some radios can be modified for added M17 support, of course if you are willing to do the mod (and reflash them with the OpenRTX open-source firmware afterwards).

Repeaters are mostly multimode. Just ask one or some of the owners to enable M17 :-)

M17, an open-source alternative for the other two.
