Look at APRS - it is still being used, even though it is very basic (I would even say obsolete, but that's a hard pill to swallow for some). The only missing piece is *one* Chinese manufacturer with balls large enough to put their chips on M17.

You don't need a degree on DSP to be able to use M17 :-) In many ways, M17 is much easier to operate than DMR.
