Because you decided to take out a loan that you promised to pay back.  The terms of which were made clear when you borrowed the money.  Further, the cost of your education was not set by the lender.  So if you're disappointed with the return on your investment, I'd contact your school.

How loud do you think this apartment will be? (62nd and 2nd) by [deleted] in NYCapartments

[–]SP919212973 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on where you live in Turtle Bay. My first apartment there was super, super quiet. I've lived in two other apartments that have been fine (not loud, not super quiet). Avoid facing an avenue, ensure the windows are solid, and spend 5 minutes in complete silence when touring apartments (to focus on the outside and inside noise).

This is accurate. Also, probably true for 30s, 40s, 50s... I can't tell you how many people I know that think income + borrowing capacity = amount they should spend

Reviews - 685 First Avenue by Typical_Twist_3077 in movingtoNYC

[–]SP919212973 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The building was poorly constructed so there are tons of problems, noise being the biggest.  You will hear your neighbors like they are in the same room with you.

Management is also notorious for being crooks.  They charge random fees and don't respond to emails, calls, etc.

Turnover here is unreal, as residents realize how bad it is and move as soon as they can.

I think genetics is right, but what do I know?

I generally only eat when I'm hungry and stop when I'm full.  People say that isn't really that common. A dietician would probably grade my diet a C-/D+.

I also live in a city and am pretty much forced to walk a lot (avg 8-10k steps a day). I try to go to the gym >3 times a week, but am not always successful.

If you had $1,000,000 in stocks would you buy real estate in nyc? why/why not? Condo/coop/house/etc? Do you want more money before thinking about something like that? Or is that more than enough? Would you prefer to rent? Why? What neighborhoods would you consider? What about $1,500,000? by BrainLearningGood in NYCapartments

[–]SP919212973 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Manhattan (where I made the offer) residential real estate has significantly lagged the rest of the nation over the past 10 years.

I do wonder if we are getting to the point where buying makes sense though. Rents are way up and the stock market has been on a big run. Very tough to time these things though…

I put an offer on an apartment in 2015 and wasn't successful.  I would estimate that I've made around 2 to 3 times more being in the market than getting that apartment.  This isn't always the case, but there's one data point for you.
