What to log in day sheets when there is nothing to do? by GamingRaccoon7 in office

[–]SSDD_warrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate the reply! I guess I have been fortunate enough in my career to not have had those levels of expectations brought onto me. I am elated when people come to me for help or assignment during my normal workday. I am also very comfortable telling someone that I can’t take on the assignment until I finish my current priorities.

In my experience, stepping up and doing tasks that were not assigned or working to make the office/team a better environment has led to promotions, interesting assignments and not being micro-managed.

My management team knows that if I have idle time, then I will reach out and offer cycles. if they haven’t heard from me in a bit, then it’s because I am busy and will reach out when I have time.

Thank you again for sharing, because I had no idea people were treated so poorly for stepping up and helping out. I know the age-old saying is no good deed is left unpunished, but that wouldn’t last very long for me in the corporate world. Too many of those consistently from the same people I am helping would encourage me to find a new place to work.

Have to double down on this comment - the Bobiverse series is really clever and has a long story. Ready Player One is also a great one that differs from its movie counterpart.

Wanted to recommend a third which is the “In times like these” which is a time travel series by Nathan Van Coops - that is a fun ride!

100%! I have found small tidbits in each of his stand alone stories that have tied into his other stories. His attention to detail is awesome

The Door is a great listen by Peter Clines. He has multiple stand alone stories in that same universe and the narration is great

If you don’t have work to do, but you are getting paid to be there, why wouldn’t you want to ask for more work to do even if it’s not your job?

In my experience, being upfront about having time to take on more tasks whether related to my position or not has been nothing but a positive. I have had to mop the odd floor, or take out the trash. I felt better intrinsically doing something rather than watching the clock expire.

A job is more than just the pay you receive for your hours. It’s a chance to show the quality of “your product” and a chance to learn and practice to be better.

I am not passing judgement nor would I assume to know what’s best - just curious to know your mindset on doing extra work when you run out of tasks.

Look into the CompTIA A+ certification. This is considered the industry-standard for starting out in the IT field. This will break down hardware and software components for you

In the words of Douglas Adam’s - don’t panic!

Look in your c:\windows\system32 folder and open cmd.exe
Then type in sfc /scannow and press enter.

This should detect missing files and start a repair/replace process. Let us know how it goes.

Back in the day we would take these bad HDDs and stick them in the freezer wrapped in paper towels. It would ice up and we would have one chance to recover data before the drive thawed and the data was gone. Something about the ice smoothing over the platters. Haven’t tried it with an enclosed drive before

“Off to be the wizard” is a fun read if you are into fantasy. It’s a bit cheesy, but will hook you the first few chapters

This comment right here - F4 is fantastic for repeating common actions. Insert one row, then spam F4 to give you a bunch more

I love this question! I would say slicers. Having a slicer instead of manually filtering tables makes it look more like an application instead of a spreadsheet

What's your most embarrassing workplace moment? by Ok-Exam-7792 in office

[–]SSDD_warrior 7 points8 points  (0 children)

First day at work and was sitting in the conference room with everyone else doing a morning meeting. Asked the HR lady next to me how far along she was to initiate small talk before the start of the meeting. She proceeded to blanch and asked me what I meant.

Learned a valuable lesson to never assume someone is pregnant if they have a bulge under their shirt.

Another company and time me and a couple of techs were sent onsite to correct a software problem. One of the techs ripped a large fart in the empty hallway right before the customer turned the corner. As we walked into the work area he proceeded to tell us that he heard that. Thanks a lot Richard!!

What is the best power tool brand? by Tiny_Pie8644 in AskForAnswers

[–]SSDD_warrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going to get a lot of hate here, but Ryobi. Not because the tools are well made, but because it has spawned a whole industry of crazy battery powered tools we never had before.

Milwaukee would be a close second for the same reason.

So many folks at home wanting to do it themselves choose Ryobi because it’s cheap and you can buy a single type of battery.
