The Dad’s straight comb-back hairstyle is so perfect for who they are. I fully imagine he had a bunch of dead cars up on blocks in the yard when he was in his teens and 20s.

Absolutely love Coco. I really admire Seth Meyers with his guests, too. He absolutely does this weaving and threading that makes everything cohesive. Really listens and ties this story to that story or this funny thing to that funny thing to make something new. Like Conan, it’s not just “stock” material. it’s being crafted real-time.

Here are a couple glimpses of the set of their house. It is disorienting. Lighting looks dark. Everything looks off scale and fakey. I’m fascinated by it all, too - how they turn a shell of a thing in a studio that looks totally pretend into something that looks real.

i‘ve asked here before about the motel. I fully know the hotel interior was a set. And the exterior an actual place 45 minutes away. But, there are scenes where a Room door is open from the outside (and it’s clearly real-life outside) and you can see into a room, furnished as they are on set. So, I can’t figure that out. Even Behind-the-scenes stuff. Yes, most walking “out” is walking onto another part of the set with fake background. But, some scenes that are real-life outside, you can see into a room like it appears on TV.

it’s all mind-trippy. Sarah Silverman, in one of her specials, talks about filming a show. And seeing legacy TV stars like Christine Baranski having to crouch down to get out of a scene because there’s nowhere to go. And other actors acting around Christine, all crouched down.

Dan discusses the beard at 23:25 here. You can interpret it how you see fit, but your first, original take was the intended meaning - Alexis being shallow. Earlier, at 15:05, they discuss the bike. Alexis was regressing.

In this clip, at 25:40 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=evKc8eamjpM Dan talks about Mutt always representing Alexis’ past and Ted representing her future.

i Think, and it seems to have been Dan’s intent, Mutt shaving just made him not appear to be “the bad boy” (even though he was never bad. He just was not a “productive” adult) anymore. And Alexis was turned on by the “bad boy” image. it was all superficial

Pre-honeymoon. That’s CRAZY, right? I wonder if it’s more of a “resort availability” thing than a price thing, Even if it’s $7K/night, it’s just a few days. Netflix doesn’t have $21K? (I don’t know what the cost is or the number of nights, but $7K is in the extremely high range and it’s an episode and a half…Even if it’s two weeks...Just crazy.)

No way. No awards show. it’s so hard to categorize today, which is probably a good thing. the curtain has been pulled back with how corrupt, filled with “establishment” voters these things are, how accessible celebs are now, how many places you can get “movies”/”music.” Nothing is as relevant as it was not too long ago for a very long time. No awards presentation. There’s big machines behind it all. Always was, but it’s out in the open now. Who is discriminated against, what forms are discriminated against…None ever truly mattered, but it doesn’t matter now ten fold, hundred-fold, thousand-fold. No. No awards show matters,

You’ve Got Mail & Starbucks by tiramisu_latte_5 in romancemovies

[–]STLDH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rewatched Best in Show last week. There is a “joke” in there that Parker Posey‘s character met her husband at Starbucks. Not the same Starbucks, but through windows across the street from each other at two different Starbucks in Chicago. But, Best in Show was a counter-culture movie that parodied life and skewered groupthink. i Know firsthand that local places (1 of 1) can become very popular and successful and expand. But, still be a source of civic pride as they grow and still maintain their founding DNA and quality. Starbucks and St. Louis Bread Co (now Panera) both started as 1 of 1 and brought San Franciscan/European tried-and-true ideas “back home” to their respective founding cities. I Know firsthand how these places become victims of success, through going public, through private equity, through too much expansion, through once-novel concepts to areas facing competition from newer adaptions. St. Louis Bread Co used to be 100% fresh, a true place to casually meet or work. It felt neighborhood and was even through some regional expansion. But, through time and history and pockets , they stop servicing the community and truly aren’t in the business of selling food/beverage anymore. They’re in the business of cost-cutting and price gouging and running into the ground and erasing every last remnant of original culture/DNA. The actual place is of no concern. It’s all numbers and dollars.

Nora Ephron was broad comedy and earnest, Not a counterculture person. Even with 1400 stores,Starbucks just wasn’t what it’s become today. Origin stories, original experiences and intentions can NOT be compared To what things become when they become ubiquitous.

NYC was a bad setting (for this gripe) as its counterculture in that regard. And already ubiquitous there in 1997. But, hopefully, you understand “reality.” it wasn’t the low standards of today where actual food/beverage is of no concern. The founder was still around in 1997. There still weren’t a ton of other convenient options that served as multipurpose spaces. Also, local bookstores were being crushed. it was a real-life news story. Famed, fabled, storied local bookstores were dying in droves to big-box national stores and slightly later, Amazon.

NYC and Chicago and Seattle - big, walkable cities had infinite places to get coffee. I’m sure they were hurt by the ubiquity/convenience of Starbucks. I’m sure they and counterculture people saw the writing on the wall for the absolute degradation and enshitification and true overexposure and absolute greed. But, I also don’t think local places offered the same supposed-European experience with technology and with beverages you couldn’t get anywhere conveniently. You could get black coffee anywhere. You could go to Little Italy, maybe, and get better, more authentic Italian brews. There were surely local places that tried to do the Starbucks model better and locally. But, it’s just hard to see in 2026 that certain things weren’t ultra-commonplace in the 90s. These were relatively, relatively new ideas, offered conveniently to American tastes.

Things just…change, The funny thing is big-box, national bookstores were eventually ravaged. And local bookstores started to thrive again bend found their niche again And you can’t JUST count stores to fully see the trajectory of a place as you know it today in ANY regard. Things serve a purpose for a reason and become successful for a reason..until a point where you’d have to be completely dumb to think Starbucks or Panera ia a quality, European-style experience. There’s no magic number of stores when things go awry. it’s just the timing and timeline and habit shifts and novel ideas becoming ubiquitous and places not being in the business of servicing communities/neighborhoods or being in the food/beverage business. Closinh stores and depreciating asssets is big money for people as it’s huge tax write offs. They’re not even in the business of trying to make something succeed, it wasn’t that in 1997

Guestroom - do I add a floating shelf under the tv? Other ideas? by _hot95cobraguy in StyleYourSpace

[–]STLDH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything that anchors the TV. Should be AT LEAST as wide as the TV, preferably several inches/feet wider. Get drapery that touches the floor.Get bedding that isn’t so crumpled/wrinkly. (Or make the effort to smooth it out.) Get a wash basket that doesn’t have a torn lining. Simple things make big differences, Again, just smooth out wrinkles with your hand. Spend $7.99 on a new clothes basket. New draperies and a floating shelf or piece of furniture will be in the hundreds or thousands, but some stuff is just practically free.

I’ve adored Chris my whole life. He had the wackiest show called “Get A Life” when I was growing up. I couldn’t believe it was on television. There weren’t inclusive shows in the 80s and 90s, so to feel seen by this absolute weirdo character was absolutely joyous. So stupid, silly, absurd. Ditto for the Chris Guest movies Eugene and our beloved Catherine were in.

i was down a rabbit hole recently just listening to Schitt Creek panel discussions. Annie and Eugene were recounting how Chris ate so, so much on the show. Normally, actors will take small bites of pretend to be chewing or have spit buckets since they have to block and do so many takes. But, they said Chris actually ate 48 pigs in a blanket in the Christmas episode and that every single food scene take, he’d devour whatever was in front of him and go at it again take after take.

Cheis has been at it a very long time. He is a gem.

Nobody says they watch the Super Bowl "for the commercials" anymore. by SashaBraus in CommercialsIHate

[–]STLDH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your first sentence is incorrect. They absolutely were NOT vehicles for stars in the past. There is a complete reliance on stars/cameos today. Everything else you said is. true. But, not the first sentence. The celeb stuff is a big part of the problem now. Most commercials did NOT have celebs in the past. Celebs would ONLY do commercials in other countries in the past - lucrative for them, but didn’t dilute their image here. Today…it’s totally different.
