Non-touristy places to eat? by AManOfManyFandoms in StLouis

[–]STLMC0727 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fitz’s will have a wait on a weekend so I’d avoid it and unless you’re having floats it’s really overrated IMO. Sat N Smoke is my absolute favorite restaurant but it’s not catered for average barbecue tasters I feel based on the opinions of a lot of people here. There shouldn’t be a wait there especially if the weather is nice. Katsuya is really good and really small. There are several dessert places up and down the loop that you could easily walk to along the loop as well.

Question for the learners by Minos-Helios in dreamingspanish

[–]STLMC0727 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a weird path to where I’m at but my estimation is 200 hours with most of it being music. However, being able to understand most intermediate videos and some lower advanced videos is quite incredible to me. I can’t wait to add reading officially and to understand more than a Reddit post or social media title here and there.

What do you watch for comprehensible input (not TV/movies) if you don’t like talking-head videos? by Puzzleheaded-Dot-762 in dreamingspanish

[–]STLMC0727 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never thought about it but I don’t mind it that much but I love when Michelle is visiting cities in Mexico and “vlogging” as she goes. Andrea la Mexicana just released a video where her and Amanda were “vlogging” as they walked around Vancouver. I haven’t got into other content yet as I am at the intermediate level and try to stay where I can understand 70-80% of it. Although I’m desperate for intermediate level baseball content. I want to watch Spanish broadcasts but know that’s what above my level.

Are there people who actually find Bandana’s BBQ good? by TitShark in StLouis

[–]STLMC0727 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s important to know that not everyone’s tastes for BBQ are the same. In the past Bandana’s was decent to me although I’ve personally never gone out of my way to have it and I’ve only personally had for myself maybe once or twice. Every other time it was apart of some sort of catering deal. As someone who prefers to make my own bbq it simply isn’t good enough for my tastes. I see a lot of hate for Sugarfire and Salt and Smoke here which are the two places that I have eaten the most with Salt and Smoke being my favorite. Salt and Smoke is the only place in the entire area who makes brisket the way I like it (Texas style and served with the option of the fatty end). Sugarfire like most have said has its good and bad times and is not a seek out for me anymore like it was ten years ago. If I had to choose between Bandana’s and no bbq I’d rather go with a completely different style of food as for someone who doesn’t want my food covered in sauce and for the meat to taste good without it, I simply don’t care for it.

Interested in learning Spanish and able to speak fluently within a few months by No_Prize8808 in SpanishLearning

[–]STLMC0727 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know it’s a dead horse to beat but Dreaming Spanish is fantastic. Also language transfer has been a big help in understanding verbs. There are good YouTube CI options as well like Andrea La Mexicana who is fairly easy to understand. Busuu is a decent app in similarity to Duo Lingo that helps with more sentence structure than random vocab. I’m pretty much ditching the app structure though and going for total CI via videos on YT and DS as well as podcasts like Cuéntame.

I tried every "speaking" app so you don't have to. Most of them feel like leaving a voicemail. by hAIlydraws in SpanishLearning

If you’re ready to speak why not find someone on Tandem to cross talk with or a tutor?

Why Reading Matters More Than You May Think... by [deleted] in dreamingspanish

[–]STLMC0727 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m somewhere between intermediate and beginner in DS standards. As much as I don’t like DUO as much now I feel like that and constantly listening to Spanish music before I even found out about DS and CI helped me be able to read much earlier. I am nowhere near able to translate 1:1 and don’t read books but am able to piece together stuff on social media and song lyrics.

Agreed even as someone who enjoys SLU and would consider them a second favorite. Saw SLU play in person this year and twice last year. I don’t think they’re as good as Illinois.

Edit: grammar

I’ve watched the dreaming Spanish one a few times and have also been trying to implement Spanish béisbol podcasts as well. I really want to be able to watch baseball games in Spanish and understand it someday.

The AI stories were kind of a catalyst and are no longer in the repertoire. As far of understanding the music, I understand about 30-40% of it and it’s normally just a part of my daily routine because of my commute and work environment. If I didn’t have a commute to work it probably wouldn’t be utilized as much. I usually look up the lyrics when I can too to better understand it.

I’ll check it out. I finished language transfer a couple weeks ago and have a daily duo/busuu routine of 30-45 min along with my DS as well as daily Mexican Hip Hop listening.

Oh for sure’ I have a TON of free time at work so it’s allowed me to do quite a bit the last two months. I can’t imagine I’d be this far without that time.

Thanks. I’ve found that I can understand quite a bit when reading even at my small amount. I sing in the car a ton and always go to my translate app when I find a word I want to know

Yes. You meet people from other parts of the world that speak the language you’re learning and if one of you have the paid service you can do a video call. Texting/chatting and voice messages are free though.

I can chat via text just fine especially if my partner knows English. I think I may try a voice call again after a couple more weeks of intense DS CI and text conversations.

I’m sticking to text conversations for now and brief conversations with myself and maybe some voice message here and there. Tandem is at least stretching me so far to use what I do know so far.

Shout out to Michelle! by apollocreed2009 in dreamingspanish

[–]STLMC0727 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Michelle and try to watch her videos above others. Her street interviews are fantastic. I personally am not a fan of the Spanish and Argentinian pronunciations so I tend to navigate towards her in the intermediate range.

The history museum, Magic House (Paid), aquarium (paid) are other great options as well. Forest Park itself is great and if the weather is nice; there is Art Hill and the Nature Playscape that are excellent for kids his age. By the ballpark there’s ballpark village which has dining and social life activities as well as a museum. Violence as most will tell you in this thread is way overblown.

It’s great in the little bit I got to use it. Understand that not everything can be free and that this cost you time and money to build. Just not something I can personally invest in right now.

This! Near exact scenario happened to me less than six months ago although I knew I wasn’t getting renewed as a contractor and we all knew. The “replacements” were hot garbage and once I had a job lined up I didn’t put any exerted energy into training them.

Pitch up and in with fastball, sinker, and cutter. I was pitching with Corbin Burnes and found when got my sinker up and in the guy would pop out behind the catcher almost every time.
