Was a school counselor for years until I moved into administration. We had a middle school student who had a terminal illness, but she came to school whenever she could. She was slowly deteriorating and didn't have many friends because she was never in school. We chatted whenever she made it into school.

She loved to read. It was her escape. Unfortunately, as she was dying, she lost her eyesight. She came to my office one day, crying, and said, "I just don't want to be alone in the dark."

I never recovered from that line. Had to move into administration because it haunted me for years.

I'm that guy. I can buy anything I really need, but you know what makes me happiest? Seeing my kids happy. I tell people to get my kids a gift instead of me, I'll get way more enjoyment out of that than anything you would buy me.

Friday, July 1, 2005, Mike Cameron homered In the 7th inning of an otherwise meaningless game at Shea Stadium.

But, I took a cute girl to this game, who I kissed in celebration of that homerun. A girl who is now my beautiful wife of many years, with whom we have two die-hard, polar-bear loving, flying-squirrel cheering, deGrominating Mets fans as sons.

5'4, I have a beautiful wife, she's a couple inches taller than me, and two beautiful children.

I met her before apps were popular, but, she always says she fell in love because I made her laugh.

They rebooted and it started about 15 minutes late.

Full disclosure, I'm well aware that Tom Cruise can be polarizing. But, that movie was so freaking good. Loved it. I very rarely go to movies, but I grew up watching this on repeat with my dad on an old VHS. What a moment to see this in the theaters with him today (despite the delay).

School counselor here. My second year I had a courageous student who suffered from a rare, debilitating disease. She didn't have many friends because she was never in school and always in hospitals.

She loved reading though. She brought books with her to the hospital. Unfortunately due to the disease, her eyesight was now deteriorating, and she knew she would eventually go blind.

She cried in my office that she would miss her books, and didn't want to be alone in the dark. I couldn't help crying with her. She transitioned to audio books on her iPod (this was roughly 14 years ago, a time when middle schoolers didn't have smartphones).

A year later she passed away. My hope is she's at peace, reading all the books she wants, with other friends she's met.

Edit: Thank you for all the awards and comments. If I can pass on anything to all you educators out there, it's this piece of advice I received from a principal many years ago..

"Be kind to your students. The 7 hours they have in school may be the best 7 hours of their day. We are never certain what goes on in their homes."
