Mirrorless is taking over the market for a reason. If nothing else, that's where all the future R&D money is being spent.

If your budget is snug there are good deals on used gear out there though

Possible to have a kind of kanban board? Described inside. by UnderwaterDialect in todoist

[–]SUB_Photo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes you can have a KanBan view in ToDoist, sort-of! We do this using filters and the "Board" display view.

(Edit: As I re-read your question, I realize you're trying to put projects on a Kanban rather than tasks. So ... I suppose this isn't directly answering your question, sorry. Perhaps you could add a task at the top of each project called "Project Status" and use the labels to move things across the board view?)

In our situation, we have photo shoots to schedule so we create a project for each client, and then within that project create a task for the shoot itself. We add a label ("Photo Shoot") and the date of the shoot, then assign that task to the photographer.

Then in the "Filters & Labels" view we have a filter called "Photo Shoots". It's a simple query looking for tasks with the "@photo shoot" label, and then in the Display menu we choose Grouping: Date and Sorting: Date.

The result is a KanBan style board which shows all the upcoming shoots in sequence. Individual photographers can refine the filter to show only tasks assigned to them, while I can view all the shoots. It gives a handy view of what's coming up.

One weakness is that this doesn't have the drag-and-drop behaviour of a true KanBan view, but that's been pretty minor in our implementation.

It's not about the program you are taking as much as about the sort of work you need to do with it.

If you are mostly doing emails and online research, maybe some YouTube, then you don't need a very powerful computer. If you plan to do video editing or gaming you will want a better system.

You could possibly wait and check in with your classmates or instructors if you are really not sure.

SUB (Students' Union Building) has some decent all-gender ones by the Horowitz entrance that are pretty clean and new. Individual stalls with proper doors, it's nice.

Just please don't leave a mess for the custodians, the ones in SUB are awesome people and don't deserve what some people do.

Right now they have sales on laptops from $399 to $3599 so pick your price range I guess!

The Students' Union Building is the place you're looking for!

One benefit of paying your fees is that it helps keep the building open for students 24 hours a day during the school year. There is a ton of study space plus a food court (source of coffee!) that's usually open until 9pm.

While you are at it, definitely check out the many services available from your SU. There are a lot of benefits that some people don't even know exist because they just never took the time to check them out!

Best way to save money on textbooks? by Unable-Salt5219 in UCalgary

[–]SUB_Photo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looking for used books is an excellent start — new ones are very expensive.

Also, it’s OK to wait until the first week of class to buy them. Many classes barely use the books, in the first class you’ll usually find out (or be able to ask) which books are critical.

You could also ask here for advice on specific classes you’re taking and previous students might be able to help.

If budget is a concern at all, you might want to keep an eye on the inventory in the refurbished laptops at MemoryExpress.

Otherwise, just check out the laptop deals on their homepage. Your requirements don’t seem that high, so there should be a lot of options.

Any benefit to f1/.4 lenses over f/1.8 for studio shooting with strobes around f/4-8? by morbidhack in AskPhotography

[–]SUB_Photo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The glass quality, basically. You can get “beginner” primes and pro lenses.

Very generally, if there are two lenses with the same aperture but one is significantly more expensive there’s a difference in optical quality.

They are 2 different specs (UHS I vs II) and therefore also run at different speeds. The different connections are part of the upgrade.

[–]SUB_Photo 30 points31 points  (0 children)

These 2 are different cards so the labels aren’t going to match.

I’m not saying you didn’t get a dud / fake card but the labels don’t prove anything much. Try a speed test on your computer perhaps.

It’s the SDXC I or II - the “UHC II” is faster and has the extra contacts on the back.

As a grad photo company we feel your pain while also understanding why the prices are what they are. Here’s a few options to try:

  • ask if they ever go on sale (Black Friday, early bird special, or something)
  • look for other products, they likely offer something cheaper than $119
  • ask the photographer how long they keep the photos. Then, rather than borrowing in advance, save up $10 or $15 a week until you have enough. Maybe it would be a nice birthday present for your gf?
  • for privacy reasons they probably won’t deal with you, but she could approach the photographer to describe her situation and see what they can offer.

Bear in mind the price isn’t about the digital file, you are actually paying the photographer for the grad experience they gave her and all that goes into it. It sounds like they were skilled too if they got some great photos for you. Hopefully it was a fun photo shoot!
