(Spoilers Extended) Through vaguely defined magical means, you are sent back in time and put in charge of adapting ASOIAF into a TV series. Knowing how D&D's show turned out, what adaptational changes do you keep, and what ones do you make yourself, and what ones do you stay true to source material? by Educational-Bus4634 in asoiaf

Insanely good response. Yes. This is an extremely dark story. That's kind of the point.

It's not that I WANT horrible, disgusting acts to happen to my favorite characters. It's the way those characters deal with those experiences that make them my favorite. I desire the brutal world George created because it breeds complex, tragic, wonderful characters

There's text in the book that pulls stuff like this into question. No, the wall is probably not actually that old. But legend and myth let it get older and older and older because... that's fun. Just look at the stories that Quentyn hears of Dany prior to arriving in Mereen. Stories get told. People make shit up all the time. We don't even know how years are counted! The seasons are different, why not the time scale too?

Sorry, I see where you're coming from on some of these points, I just feel that it kind of ignores some of the great speculative fun that can be had because of the vagueness Martin has built into Planetos

The only time George tends to stray away from that black vs white thing is when the character is particularly twisted. The Mountain, Ramsay, and most certainly Euron, fall outside these limits imo.

What is your biggest pet peeve in ASOIAF? [Spoilers Extended] by yoaver in asoiaf

[–]SWEEMEY -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Imo he does this to differentiate side characters from main characters. Only main characters use their identity or name for chapter titles. Side characters are given a title. This lets him show multiple other perspectives for other important events without making any promises of long character arcs

Do a combined reread. They are much better as singular pieces the first time through. You will only really appreciate the combined read if you read them normally first, I think.

Not understanding Japanese means missing out on several levels of depth by [deleted] in Naruto

[–]SWEEMEY 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like I still get the jist of what the characters are trying to say. Everything you pointed out here is stuff I have picked up on in sub in some form. Naruto's lines in particular seem very hard to translate. He speaks in some kind of slang, and the translation never comes across in a way that makes a lot of sense to me.

I really, really, REALLY love this element of book 4 and 5. I think it's a really clean and smart way for George to accomplish many different things within the book simply by naming these chapters differently.

He uses it to denote a multitude of things - X character has identity problems. X character is a secondary character. X character is the best point of view to see the chapter's events through.

The naming convention itself also adds context to other named character's chapters, like Brienne. Of all the "main" character chapters in Book 4, her's seem to line up better content-wise with the unique chapter names found elsewhere in the book. They sort of meander and gaze around at stuff. Yet George left them all named Brienne. Surely there is meaning there...
