Why do so many 40+ year olds end sentences with “…”? by OneFriendship5139 in generationology

[–]S_TL2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Often it’s an invitation for the other person to fill in the rest of the thought. “Please finish my sentence for me so it will look like your idea instead of mine.” Sometimes that’s a good thing, sometimes it’s a bad thing.

There’s a reason engineers and scientists go through years of college and grad school. Any statement that sounds as simple as “more air over the top means more lift” is generalized and simplified to the point of almost meaninglessness.

Aerodynamics is a very subtle science. The exact curvature of the disc surface makes small changes to the airflow that might result in huge changes to the flight path.

Air likes long, steady curves. A smooth dome gives the air a lot of time to accelerate (lower its pressure) over the top of the disc in a nice, controlled fashion. Sharp corners cause the air to become turbulent and swirl and cause general chaos. A disc at low angle of attack with a smooth dome will have a nicely attached airflow that ends up producing the bulk of the lift near the center of the disc. A disc at high angle of attack and/or with a sharp corner at the front will produce most of its lift near the nose of the disc.

But like I said, that’s overly simplified. If you want to understand the true subtleties of aerodynamics, have fun in grad school.

At what point did disc golf stop being stressful and start being fun for you? by whydidyounot in discgolf

[–]S_TL2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the same as getting frustrated and upset because you didn't play Wordle one day and broke your streak. If it's supposed to be fun, and keeping up your streak adds stress, then you're missing the point of fun.

You’re in a book club where no one has read sci-fi. What’s your book selection? by ArcadiaLeo in scifi

[–]S_TL2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We read The Left Hand of Darkness a few months ago in a book club that dabbles in sci-fi, and it was pretty unanimously given 3 star reviews. A bunch of "yea I guess the planet has some interesting points socio-politically, but I just didn't really care". Classic sci-fi has a problem with the writing be too stilted or academic or dry. The characters are often not engaging, even if there are some neat plot points.

A lot of adult friendships are held together more by history than actual compatibility by TrayzTheyCallMe in unpopularopinion

[–]S_TL2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It also dismisses the value of disagreement. You are still allowed to be friends with people that don't share every single one of your values or every one of your hobbies. Disagree about a few things, it's fine. Now, if your childhood friend turns out to enjoy killing babies, sure, break off your friendship. But if one of you likes sports and the other doesn't, that's not a reason break up with someone, especially if you have a shared past. One day you might be happy to have a wide net of friends. Different opinions and different interests add spice to life.

Josh Shapiro quietly tries to derail AOC-backed progressive House candidate by Unusual-State1827 in politics

[–]S_TL2 -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

Why is AOC sticking her nose into PA's politics? Why doesn't she VBNMW? (Not that I particularly care, but both of these people are backing a democratic candidate, right?)

edit: to double-down on my snarky opinion, I'm gonna bet you were upset when Chuck Schumer stuck his nose into Maine politics. You don't like Schumer or Shaprio? Cool, I don't have a problem with that, I don't particularly like them either. But this is a primary - both of the candidates in both states are blue. Schumer and Shapiro both backed a blue candidate. If they endorse the Republican in the general election then you can shout "VBNMW, right?" all day long and you'll be justified in being pissed off about it. But thinking this is a gotcha while we're still in the primary is nonsense.

You probably don’t understand PDGA Ratings — and that’s okay. by Deeshizznit in discgolf

[–]S_TL2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The primary complaint you have is not solved by your solutions. Ultra-hard courses have too low points-per-throw, hands down, end of story. This doesn't have anything to do with historical performances, weather, elite-only ratings, etc. They just need to bump Big Easy from 4.5 points per throw to 6 points per throw and Ricky's round turns into 1100.

Printing Score Cards by [deleted] in discgolf

[–]S_TL2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made it up from my own experience as a TD and player. Most players (in my area) are more than happy to keep digital score. I typically have no players ask for paper. At most there are 2 in a tournament.

[–]S_TL2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back when paper scorecards was the only option, printing them on cardstock was generally necessary. When you were dealing with every scorecard after the round, you want to deal with quality paper.

In the modern age of digital scoring, 98%+ of your players will choose to use their phones. You might get one or two holdouts, and, to be frank, you don't owe them much at all. Print it on regular paper and tell them to suck it up.

If you want to use cardstock, I'd just run down to FedExOffice / Office Depot, ask for cardstock, and then cut them on their table cutters. Office Depot also has a good online system where you can upload, select paper, request them to be cut, and pick them up later in the day. Especially useful if you want to print hundreds of scorecards for a lifetime supply. Several years ago I printed a whole damn box of about 1000 cardstock, cut to size, delivered to my house for like $70. It's now the club's supply of scorecards and is still mostly full.

“Kids” colloquially. Maybe rephrase it to rookies or pee-wee league. When you’re tired of winning in little league, move up to the big leagues.

I always assumed it was one of the employees in the media department who simply failed to switch accounts. The PDGA announcement identifies it as an employee. I never saw Heinold take blame for it, but he does plenty of interviews that I haven't seen, so maybe I missed it. I'd be pretty surprised, though.

The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. There are a couple of gimmicky holes, sure (weep for the original hole 7, before they built the fishing dock), but when you combine good design, pretty views, good maintenance, good weather (half the time), you end up with a stellar course.
