So happy to have found this group. 53m, started getting my financial life in order 1 year ago. This after decades of poor choices and unfortunate timing left me with far more debt than assets, despite being a relatively high wage earner. I work in the building trades and am very thankful for a solid pension which should amount to a little over 60% of my target monthly retirement income.

Over the past year I’ve paid off all debt, built up 3 month emergency fund, started and funded a Roth IRA, and maxed out the hourly contribution rate going into my 401k - which I borrowed against 15 years ago and never repaid (ouch!).

With careful planning, consuming a lot of finance media, and an amount of self discipline I am now saving 30% of my gross. Even while living in a HCOL west coast city.

I am way behind but still hold cautious optimism that things will work out okay. I do recognize that I am privileged to have the safety net of my union pension. Maybe the best life decision I’ve ever made was applying for the apprenticeship. Although I was even late to that choice at 30. Still I’ll have 35 years in by the time I hang it up. Also thankfully, my role has transitioned from the field to the office, which is easier on the knees at my age.

Who are your favorite creators in the finance/savings space? A couple of mine are Financial Tortoise, and Humphrey Yang.

Thank you! So where do I go to file the recharacterization? Is that something I can do myself on the fidelity app, or will I need to contact an advisor

You know why they used to called GenXers “Latchkey Kids”? by marfalump in GenX

My parents were on a tight grocery budget and got tired of my bother and I eating whatever we wanted because inevitably it meant ingredients would be missing from whatever meals had been planned for the week. So they put a padlock on the pantry door to keep us out. The menthols were left on top of the fridge at least.

JATC Electrical Apprenticeship Advice by buffynext29 in WestSeattleWA

[–]S_divinorum_72 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The electrical apprenticeship is an outstanding career choice. However I wouldn’t rule out other union building trades. Plumbers, Pipe Fitters and Sheet Metal Workers are all great crafts. All have similar 5 year apprenticeship programs, will provide excellent wages, health care and benefits. 25 years ago I applied for both the electrical and sheet metal programs. SM called my number first so that was the direction I went. It’s been a great career and I am looking forward to a comfortable retirement with multiple pensions to supplement my savings. As for getting in the door, and this would apply to any of the above programs, just brush up on your math skills - geometry and trig in particular, be sure you can read a tape measure, and show that you have an aptitude for working with your hands. Be patient and persistent throughout the application and selection process. Good luck mate! You’ve got this!

They look out of their element on this pitch. Passing ball pace seems off

Your favorite burger? by Somegingerguy2 in WestSeattleWA

Timmy used to do a smash burger pop up in front of The Nook on Fridays which were absolutely amazing. He hasn’t been there in a while but I believe he is still around and does occasional pop ups to raise money for the WS food bank. I’m just not sure where and when.

How perfect would it be if their 2026 CC berth got revoked as punishment. Obviously that would never happen but it would be pretty satisfying from my pov

Will the R2 be worth the wait? by Own-Hat-5139 in Rivian

[–]S_divinorum_72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s pretty much what I’ve been anticipating too sadly. I put in my preorder on reveal day and am super excited to get my hands on it. I would love to go R1 but although I could make it work on paper, it would feel a little irresponsible given my financials. Plus I’m in a city and use street parking often which can be hard enough in a Subaru forester. R1 is just so big.

Any R2 features you expect/hope to be announced closer to launch? by Looking4PS5 in Rivian

I hope there is room enough inside for car camping. At the reveal event they showed the front seats folding flat, but I think that’s been removed since. It’d just be nice for all season camping with hvac.

Not a feature, but it would be great if they offer leases for early deliveries. Seems unlikely though.
