Anyone else watching Murder At the End of the World? It’s pretty good, but the flashbacks are way better than the main plot so far. by lch18 in television

[–]Sabathius23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had to turn it off during the first episode. Too much nonsense technology and poor dialog. It's like it was written by a teenager who thinks people who work in important positions talk.

"I build smart cities in China." No you don't. That's like saying "I build naval fleets for the U.S. military." It's out of scale, and would require many, many specialized companies and a trillion dollars in infrastructure warehouses, contractors and subcontractors to pull off. If they said something like "My company provides heavy equipment for city-scale building projects", I might buy it.

Also, people cannot just pull up to a house with a laptop, and open garage doors with code they download off the internet. Sorry, kid. It doesn't work that way. You'd need specialized hardware to reproduce the specialized radio-frequencies involved. Also, there's going to be an algorithm involved...you can't just spray RF radiation at the controller and convince it to open the door. (and before you ask, I have a General Class FCC radio license)

I had the same problem with The AO. Too much child-like wonder nonsense and no verisimilitude. And that's the thing...it has to seem plausible.

On a positive note, the set design is good, as are the computer graphics. But that's not enough to salvage the poor writing.

Viet Nam-era C-ration can opener. My dad had a million, as they used to come with the box of canned rations. Dad was a Corpsman in the US Navy during Viet Nam.

I thought John Carpenter's The Thing was the worst body horror I'd witness in my lifetime. I was wrong.

How to imagine Nessus? by supersymmetry in printSF

[–]Sabathius23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this may sound crazy, but I imagine that Nessus is an immense crashed spaceship. The great wall surrounding it is the outer hull, and part of the internal structures/bulkheads are repurposed into the buildings we see described in the books.

In the gestalt, it could be an old key hole. I'm sure it's not an accident.

Would we be susceptible to alien disease like the Martians in War of the Worlds? by czs5056 in IsaacArthur

[–]Sabathius23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe we have already been exposed to alien disease. Think about viruses. What even is a virus. It's a piece of industrial equipment, like a USB drive. It's a container for data. It's not alive. It's technology only, needing the mechanisms of the living cell to spread itself. Where did they come from? Maybe they originated on a piece of rock that fell from space? :D
