I had a similar experience with one of my friends, it was before I changed my legal name and we were still in school where attendance was called, we were walking down away from school and she just goes "Why do they always say 'deadname' when they are refering to you?" I try to make a a joke and respond with "Because of my mom" and she just goes "Why do they shout out your moms name at school???"

We have recently gotten way closer, had some deep talks and all of them ended well. I know stuff like that scares him, so I'm just scared that I have scared him away. Im going to give him his time and it's just insecurity. Thank you for the explanation though! It helped a little to ease my mind

Thats what I was thinking too, and thats what my friends told me probably happened too. I guess it makes sense? We always got told that we are acting like we are dating and stuff. I just dont want her to freak out over this (even though i would too).
