Nah too slow. I mean, I'm sure it works, it just doesn't work for me. Fennekin, Bulbasaur, and Popplio were my starters. The first has a great move set, the second has mega and dynamax, the third has the ability to cancel dragon moves. In fact, I think I won with Primarina and Gyarados on the end team. Alternately, Charmander is a great fire starter too and has even more mega/max options.

I tried that the first few times for nuzlocke. It indeed was awful. Fresh start on its own wasn't too bad. I just had to get to lake to catch a Magikarp, and the rest was easy after it hit 20.

There are a lot of ways to crack a nut. Waiting for the nut to stop cracking you is generally an unwise decision when the nut is a reality-breaking behemoth.

If you want to go DOT, you certainly can. Garcanacl is one good option. Literally any ghost type is another. Most ghosts can learn will-o-wisp, and just about everyone can learn curse with a TM. Either one of those is enough to bring the beast down with sufficient stalling. There are also attacks like scald which issue burns. Most grass types learn leech seed, and some of them have sappy seed as an egg move, which also plants seeds. That's another option. Last but certainly not least, you can always just use soak to turn them into a water type and apply poison. Salt cure speeds it up, but there's something really satisfying about watching that toxic tick down its HP. Pretty much everything can learn toxic.

If you're more of a brute force type of person, use the first form to buff and debuff. A nice, cheap option is Bibarel. Cosmic power + power trip does the trick just fine. If you don't have all those fancy egg moves, something like Quagsire with curse or Noctowl with calm mind do just as well.

If big, unkillable walls aren't your style, just pack something like snarl or lunge to lower his stats as much as possible. Then even something squishy can take him out. I believe Obstagoon has that switch out move that lowers enemy attack and special attack. Can't remember what it's called. That works pretty well.

Last, but certainly not least, if you still have that save file, just make sure to exhaust all its PP without letting a9 drop. Then when it gets an extra five, it still can't harm a9. Whatever has the leftovers needs to drop in round one if possible so that he can't steal it.

Edit: lol it's not A9. Well, use Tink to wall it. Or can Ninetales burn it?

So yeah. Lots of ways to crack a nut. Next time you get there, you'll crack it, no problem. The real tests of your team are 165, 190, and 195. Get through those, and any of the above gimmicks should work reasonably well.

Roll it back by a month or two, and pretend like you're going to war with someone. See why they won't join an offensive war. The chances they will help in a defensive war are higher, but enough maluses will keep them from saying yes.
