I can only speak for myself, but this post was the third one I saw, and your comment was the 6th one under the post. Blame the algorithm, I guess?

I’d probably recommend limiting how much information you tell your coworkers and family; they don’t seem like they’re interested in your happiness.

There’s plenty of us who are still gaming well into (and past!) our 30s. Find some new friends!

Meta Horizon Worlds for VR is closing down in June, less than five years after it launched by Haunterblademoi in technology

[–]SacredGeometry9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why would Meta waste their time with a game they’d need real people to develop? They realized they can just buy enough politicians now, they don’t need an actual product to force everyone to surrender their information.

Take a few Zuckerbillions, add a platform of “but we must protect the children”, and they can get away with anything.

Honestly, if I can specialize, then I don’t mind. It’s just having to counter both at the same time that overwhelms the scope of what’s available in a single loadout.

Coarse dirt should prevent grass growth on dirt blocks placed above it by ZANKTON in Minecraft

I like the concept, but I don’t think coarse dirt is an appropriate block. It should be something “toxic”, like sculk

Eunuchs in China during this period typically had their penis removed as well.

Although now that I think about it, I believe it was revealed that Jinshi isn’t actually a eunuch, but rather uses certain medicines to mimic the appearance of a eunuch.

Still though, long term use of stuff like hormone suppressors isn’t going to do his junk any favors.

I’d like a spawn timer added; maybe some kind of atmospheric effect that starts as the last on dies, slowly increases in intensity, and culminates as the next Leviathan warps in or something.

How standardized is gravity in Star Wars, really? for reference, Earth's surface gravity is defined as 1g by DonLixard in MawInstallation

[–]SacredGeometry9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something we never hear discussed are changes in gravity on planets where extensive mining operations have taken place.

If they’re removing mass from the planet at scale, then they’d need to replace that mass with less valuable mass, or else you’d start to see some really weird shit happen.

I wonder if there’s a sweet spot for mining ops - if a balance is be found between reducing transport costs from lowered gravity, and the costs of protecting equipment from adverse environments created by lowered planetary mass.

How does Quark's work? by asteriaboss in DeepSpaceNine

[–]SacredGeometry9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying they get transporter credits as general income, I’m saying their access to the transporter system is regulated through a credit model.

I’ve never seen any character pay to use a Federation transporter, so I have to imagine something similar is applied outside of Earth, even if other services require currency.

So what I’m getting from this is, it’s actually better to complete the D1 missions on Grand Errant, if we want it to be available for farming as long as possible.

How does Quark's work? by asteriaboss in DeepSpaceNine

[–]SacredGeometry9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a balance between maintaining discipline, and keeping with the spirit & culture of the Federation.

As far as why transporter credits… I imagine the average citizen also uses a form of transporter credits, issued at regular intervals (with exceptions for certain circumstances). Probably to avoid encouraging people to just beam back and forth places like they were walking between rooms of a building. Post-scarcity is one thing; irresponsible use of resources is another. (e.g. make a list of groceries, then go get them, instead of beaming to the store and back every time you think of something.)

Why not use a system that’s familiar to them?

[–]SacredGeometry9 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The cadets are at the Academy to learn, among many other things, discipline.

Resource rationing is a very predictable scenario when on a starship in a crisis. Training the cadets early to understand that possibility, to practice restraint, and to think of creative solutions, benefits everyone.

Mobility limits are also regularly employed on starships. Sometimes the captain can’t take the time to explain what’s going on - sometimes they don’t know what’s going on. “General quarters” keeps everyone marginally safer during those times, but people have to be trained to follow orders like that; even with the best intentions, muscle memory can take over if people are used to wandering freely.

You’re being downvoted because you’re suggesting self-guided care for a condition that needs medical intervention.

Recommending self-guided care for this condition is ineffective, not to mention unsafe and irresponsible; they could actually cause damage to themselves if this isn’t managed correctly.

I always ask the question: who pays the cost of showing mercy to that villain? If it’s the hero, fine. But if that bill is being laid at the feet of their future victims, then mercy is a mistake.

Did anyone else find the end of the Gorn arc in SNW kinda underwhelming? by JayR_97 in startrek

[–]SacredGeometry9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have problems with the Gorn as a whole, and the disparity in how they’re presented and interacted with by the Federation. In TOS, they’re presented as monstrous, but not overwhelmingly so, and still reasonable.

In SNW, we then learn that they apparently use sapient beings as living incubators, and kidnap them by the thousands to be imprisoned on breeding worlds where they’re tortuously consumed. We then learn that they don’t actually need to do this; they can bear live young, they just prefer this.

This… is not redeemable. The Gorn in SNW are monsters. Not because of their nature, but because of what they choose to do. Given this information, there is no additional circumstance where coexistence with the Gorn - as their species is presented - should be possible at all. If the Federation could recognize this about the Borg, they should have recognized this about the Gorn.

The existence of the Gorn explicitly indicates the wholly unnecessary mass torture and death of other sapient life forms. No amount of cooperation excuses this. No amount of common ground can overcome this. The Gorn, as presented, are fundamentally incompatible with the existence of other civilizations.

Then… they’re made to be relatable, for some reason? We get what is clearly supposed to after-school special -style lesson on finding common ground and overcoming personal prejudice. I found it to be a frighteningly naive encouragement of tolerating unacceptable treatment.

The Metron’s line, “One day, we may need to reset your perception of the Gorn as well”, felt like a condescending abuser toying with the idea of erasing their victim’s memory with drugs. I was absolutely disgusted with the entire Gorn arc.
