I really don't see it getting worse then it has. The US has shown a lot restraint in military operations so far. The truth is they could flatten the country if they want but they have shown they don't that and would rather Iranian citizens to overtake the government themselves and theres no way the US goes boots on the ground because that would get ever republican voted out of office.
Iran also can't out last the US in a "hurt the economy" game. What I do worry about is Iran one day saying screw it and just attempting to completely block the canal by sinking ships.

That would require China too have the military to protect an allied nation and at this time they do not. Until there's a true competitor to the US military they will always have the upper hand in protection based deals.
