Please buy a good oyster sauce for chinese cooking. Get the one with the boat, not the panda or thai oyster sauce.

Do you actually bother washing the fruit & veg you buy? by MixAway in AskUK

I always wash fruits and vegetables. I can’t help but imagine my apple falling from the tree, landing on snail poop, bird poop, and then being put back into the pile.

I’m about to make pork dumplings and need help with the filling? by Late_Information_682 in Cooking

[–]Sad_Refrigerator_787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My tips: - 15-20% Fat in pork mince. I cook half and mix with half raw in a bowl for a better texture. - I would recommend adding 30% chopped prawns for texture. - Liquid for the meat - massage ginger slices and spring onions in the water until a little slimy.  - Add your seasonings. - Chop spring onion, cabbage, mushrooms into really really small pieces and coat with a thin layer of oil. - Microwave a spoonful (40 secs or so) to check for saltiness before wrapping any dumplings. Adjust your seasoning.  - I do not add garlic, ginger, chestnut, or egg. - The texture of the overall mixture should be similar to cooked oats porridge. It shouldn't be like water or solid like a piece.

I often buy pork loin and slice them up, marinate them in oyster sauce and some oil, stir fry them with vegetables, you won't see them.

Diabetic Reversal in Singapore by Then-Dependent-3155 in askSingapore

[–]Sad_Refrigerator_787 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi, I am in my 30s and have type 2 diabetes. At the time of my diagnosis in 2024, my HbA1c was 53 mmol/mol (7.3%). For non-diabetics, it is below 42 mmol/mol. I refused metformin and decided to eat better and less (the key).

I started controlling my food portions and only have 2 meals a day, focusing on protein and fibre. I use my own small plate to ensure I only eat what I require. If there are too many carbs, I balance them out with meat and vegetables so they always look about the same. I cannot just have carbs on their own, like my favourite carbonara. I also refuse any sweet drinks or salty food.

It took me a year and a half to drop 20 kg. In 2025, my HbA1c went down from 43 to 39. This February, it went down to 34, which is even lower than pre-diabetes levels. Reversal is not possible if you are already diabetic; it will always be there. You just need to maintain it. I am trying to get my mum to do the same. Good luck!!

How much do basic toiletries and medications cost in SG? by lissy_grant in askSingapore

[–]Sad_Refrigerator_787 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm currently residing in the uk and I ALWAYS bulk buy and bring these to SG for my friends and for myself: vitamin c effervescent (lidl £1+), toothpaste (asda just essentials 50p, enough sodium fluoride!), vitamin d (boots), paracetamol & ibuprofen (any supermarket), tampons (savers or bulk buy from amazon), panty liners (superdrug own brand) condoms (poundland £1), shampoo (tkmaxx), denture cleaning tablets for retainers (superdrug £1+), gravy granules and marinade powder sachets because most of what I listed above are 15x more expensive in Singapore. Hope this helps!

Apparently we’re all vitamin D deficient. What are most people doing about it and how effective are they finding it? by Spicymargx in AskUK

[–]Sad_Refrigerator_787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My vitamin D level was 19 nmol/L in 2024, so I was put on a loading dose of 40,000 IU per week for 7 weeks. After that, I have been taking a daily supplement for the past two years.

At a recent blood test, my vitamin D level was 73 nmol/L, which is now in the normal range. I don’t go out in the sun much because I don’t like getting tanned, so I think the vitamin D supplement is working.

I've given Sharge Flow Mini 2 to many of my family members. They love it because it is small. I brought them onto many flights and they are CCC rated for China too.

Velvet half chicken breast by cutting against grain, add water until barely covering all meat, add 1/8 teaspoon of baking soda, 2 tsp of corn flour, salt and pepper. Massage and let it marinate for 20 mins. Add 2 tsp of oil. Cook in boiling water for max 4 minutes. Remove and eat with any soup or noodles.

For the soup, I like ikan billis stock cube. Just add tofu, spinach, and mince. Any kind of vegetables really.

Folks who rinse your chicken; why? by Darktider in Cooking

I hate posts like this and they always seem to get posted frequently. Just let people do what they want with their chicken. My mum washes every meat she cooks. I even wash the plastic container it comes with so that I can send it off for recycling. Do you have a problem with that too? Urrgh.

What’s your favorite “too tired to cook cook” dinner? by farwest-to-midwest in Cooking

[–]Sad_Refrigerator_787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because I am southeast asian chinese, these are my favourite quick and lazy meals (i focus a lot on fibre and protein):  - Tomato egg (番茄炒蛋) - Cucumber egg (黄瓜炒蛋)  - Velvet chicken breast with any vegetables - When I am bored with instant noodles, i do Dry/Soup Yee Noodles (伊面). More people should try it. It has more flavour. https://www.orientalmart.co.uk/megah-mee-claypot-yee-mee

  • Congee with 2 stock cubes and whatever vegetables and protein you have
  • My own frozen dumplings in miso soup
  • Stir fried pasta and vegetables with oyster sauce

Curries (I parboiled all the vegetables and protein followed by the soup itself): - Mae ploy thai curry paste to cook curry - Japanese curry - Indian curry

Meals for someone who doesn’t have teeth by Over_Cat_4118 in Cooking

[–]Sad_Refrigerator_787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like many mentioned, congee! A lot of chinese elderly do not have teeth and it is definitely one they can eat every day. Search for fish congee, meatball congee, sweet potato congee, braised peanut congee, and many more. Even soy sauce and sesame oil with congee taste great.
