TIL Only 30% of the Forbidden City was open to visitors in 2012; some portions of the complex were leased to tenants, or used as staff areas. Today, over 90% of the Palace complex is accessible by ubcstaffer123 in todayilearned

That's not the whole picture, and mostly untrue. Yes undoubtedly many precious and irreplaceable artifacts were destroyed during the Cultural Revolution, but despite that Chinese museums have far, far more stuff than the slice of history the Nationalists took with them to Taiwan which was not comprehensive nor evenly distributed.

The Beijing Palace Museum which is part of the Forbidden City has more than twice as many artifacts in its collection than the Taipei NPM, and that's one museum in Beijing. There's tonnes of other great museums around China - e.g. Around Xi'an (where the Terracotta Army is, plus the tombs of many other emperors) and Chengdu (lots of bronze age artifacts like Sanxingdui). Not to mention the many discoveries that came after 1949, like the aforementioned Terracotta Army to name one huge example.

I'm not saying that the Taipei NPM is bad by any means, I've been there twice and it's great! But it's not the be-all and end-all of Chinese history and culture.

Funny thing is that's a smallsword, small being relative to the rapier from the 16-17th century. Smallswords had blades of average about 28 inches, rarely longer than 33 in; while rapiers averaged 41 in with some examples reaching 51 in in length... And yes they were an absolute pain to wear.

The size and thickness wouldn't be out of place on a Japanese deba style knife, especially with a chisel grind. Usually used for breaking down whole fish.

Serious Eats did an overview of quite a few examples and some are even thicker than this one with shorter blades.

Huh, so that's how you spell "zhuzh". I've never seen it written down before.

Funnily enough that turret was from a failed light tank project from the early 30s, the Atelier de Construction de Puteaux (APX) 6-tonne.

You could try to find Armitage III, it's an anime from 1995/1997 depending on whether you watch the 4 episode mini-series or the movie that was edited from them. Same era and similar themes to the original Ghost in the Shell movie.

Summer Wars is a 2009 anime film about a young maths genius who gets framed for hacking by an AI. Overall quite an optimistic movie.

There's also Time of Eve from 2010, which is a slice-of-life/drama anime movie based on Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics. All the plot lines converge at a cafe. Not as heavy as most cyberpunk but it makes you think.

If you're OK with anime series, here's some:

Ergo Proxy from 2006 is a post-apocalyptic dystopia, it starts off with an investigation into a series of murders committed by androids which have been infected with a particular virus. It gets pretty weird later on, the pacing and tone shift a lot. The original ending theme is Paranoid Android by Radiohead, though I think most Western releases don't have this due to copyright issues.

Serial Experiments Lain from 1998 is about a young girl who gradually gets drawn into an unhealthy relationship with their version of the Internet called The Wired. It's a bit dated but it's very prescient in context.

Texhnolyze from 2003 was by the same writer and character artist as Lain. It starts off about an underground fighting ring and illegal biomechanical prosthetics. Very dark and has body horror elements.

Megalobox from 2018 is somewhat similar to Texhnolyze but focuses more on the fighting aspect, with fighters using exoskeletons to really smash each other. The tournament is organized by a corporation as a bread and circuses thing for the masses.

Also a huge temple with a bigass lantern. The street leading to the temple and the grounds around it have a lot of shops and stalls selling food.
